A "Religious" Woman Runs for Mayor of Beit Shemesh

כ"ד לחודש החמישי תשע"ג

Times Of Israel: In fight for the soul of a divided city, a religious woman steps into the ring

Debra Kamin, July 31, 2013

Aliza Bloch, a mother-of-four and a former school principal, is running for mayor of Beit Shemesh. Only this political novice, her supporters say, can save it from escalating ultra-Orthodox intolerance.

Religious??

Why is her neckline so low?

Why are her elbows not covered?

Why is she wearing a red dress? How short is it, I wonder?

Why doesn't she cover her hair properly (ie. according to halakhah)?

And why is she running for mayor?

Oh, I get it. She's religious as in  a "Whateva! I do what I want!" sort of way.

And, in my experience phrases like, escalating ultra-Orthodox intolerance" translate very nice into "justified Haredi-bashing.

  1. And you are lax in nothing whatsoever?

Does she make brachot? Does she raise her children in a Torah environment? Is she shomer Shabbat?

How dare you judge her for her imperfections! This only leads to Sinat Chinam!

As to her phrase "escalating ultra-Orthodox intolerance", I know plenty of "black hatter" Beit Shemesh residents - their wives have their sleeves down to their wrists and their tichels set to maximum - who will say the same and worse, after what they have been through over the last several years.

    And speaking of the devil...

  2. From the Kalashnokver Rebbe:

"The fact the Bayit Yehudi endorses her, says enough for me...."

Two wrongs do not make a right.

I absolutely have short comings. I don't think that tzni'uth, which is one of a woman's most important misswoth, is one of them.

According to Rav Eliyahu ztz"l's p'saq din, Gila Finkelstein never should have bee in the K'nesseth. The fact that she was probably the NRP's best MK ever, is irrelevant.

And, speaking of mayors, Daniella Weiss of Qedumim, IMO, was one of the best mayors in Israel, certainly in the Shomron and Yehudah, and did not buy into gov't pressure or Shomron or Yesha Council pressure (which was probably worse). She stuck by her ideals and principles.

Just curious, has anyone out there been to RBS B'? I have friends there, and hope to visit B' and A'. I have never been to either.

    Let's go together.

Who knows, maybe people out there will stop demonizing B' due to its minority, and I will let go of my own prejudice, and stop referring to A' as a ghetto ("American").

Belze stays far away from any of these shenanigans, and I believe that Karlin does, too.

I guess this warrants further investigation. Who's having me over for Shabbath?

    P. S. I was told by a guy I know from A' that if I want to pass into B', if I'm wearing tights, they'll let me pass.

You mean לאנגע ווייסר זאקן? I asked.

He gave me a blank stare.

Now that I think about it, I should run for mayor of Beit Shemesh.

What's the halacha of presenting a disparaging opinion based not on substance but on guilt by association?

  5. Shy Guy, The K-Rebbe was writing tongue-in-cheek, I believe. Although the Jewish Home Party is neither Jewish, a Home, or even a party. Discuss!

    Conservative Rock Star,

Would you care to elaborate? It making a huge effort to leave my qelipoth galuthiyoth behind, and recognizing that not everything that I (we?) learned as kids in galuth (exile) has anything to do with being Jewish, then I plead guilty! :-)
