רש״י שואל:
ולמה הביא עליהם חשך?
שהיו בישראל באותו הדור רשעים, ולא היו רוצים לצאת, ומתו בשלשת ימי אפלה כדי שלא יראו מצרים במפלתם ויאמרו אף הן לוקין כמונו.

יש הרבה יהודים שעדיין מגורים בחו״ל לא רוצים לעלות לארץ ישראל. הרבה היהודים כאלה שכחו שהגלות היא עונש (הרב משה ליכטמן בספרו Eretz Yisrael in the Parsha). לא, אני לא מדברים על הקהילות החרדיות. החרדים הנמצאים בחו״ל כן מודים לזה וכן רוצים לצאת מהגלות וכן מתפללים שלוש פעמים כל יום שהמשיח יבוא להציל אותם ולהוציא אותם מהגלות. רובם מאמינים שהקב״ה עצמו סילק אותנו מארץ ישראל ולכן רק הוא עצמו יכול להחזיר אותנו מהגולה על ידי המשיח שלו. הם מתיחסים לתקומת מדינת ישראל כפעולה של מרד ולא כסימן שהקב״ה פתח את השערים בכדי להכניס אותנו לארץ ישראל. אני ממליץ לאחים שלי בקהילות האלה לקרוא את הספר אם הבנים שמחה ע״י הרב יששכר שלמה טייכטל הי״ד שבו הרב מגיב לכל החששות הרגילות של החרדים לגבי העניין ״עליה בחומה.״

מה הסיבות למה היהודים הלא חרדים הם לא עולים ארצה? למה היורדים הישראלים לא רוצים לחזור? למה יש עולים חדשים, שחזרו הביתה בחו״ל, לא רוצים לחזור? הם אומרים שהם לא אוהבים איך הממשלה פועלת ואיך היא מתייחסת לאזרחים שלה. הם אומרים שהם מתוסכלים שהבג״ץ שולט את מדינת ישראל יותר מהכנסת. היורדים האלה אומרים שהם לא מצליחים להתמודד עם הביורוקרטיה. היורדים האלה אומרים שהם לא מצליחים להתמודד עם התרבות. האם היהודים האלה גם לא הצליחו לשתלב עם יהודים שונים ממדינות אחרות מהם?

כל אלה לא סיבות בכלל אלא הם תירוצים על הפנים למרות כל הטענות שלהם ולמרות כל הכשלונות על ידי האירגונים והתנועות, הטוענים שהם ״ציוניים.״

האם אתם מאמינים שממשלת ישראל היא ימנית מדי? האם אתם מאמינים שממשלת ישראל היא שמאלנית מדי? ואז תגיעו לכאן כדי להשתתף בשינוי שלה. להשקיע את חייכם במולדתכם האמיתית היחידה, ולא במדינות השייכות לאומות העולם ולא לכם.

ומה עם כל הדתיים האחרים שבחו״ל המזדהים כ״ציוניים?״ מה התירוצים שלכם? האם אתם צריכים להשאר בחו״ל כדי לטפל בהורים הזקנים שלכם? האם הגרושים/ות שלכם לא נותנים לכם להביא את ילדיהם ארצה איתכם? ממש מובנים הקשיים כאלה. אז בינתיים אני לא מתייחס אליכם חוץ מלהמליץ לכם לא לוותר להתמאמץ ולהשקיע לחפש את הפתרון.

ומה עם כאלה ללא אחריות כטיפול הורים ולשמור את בריאות וחינוך הילדים? מה הסיבות התירוצים שלכם?

האם אתם (כוללים הילדים של היורדים הישראלים) חושבים שצריכים להשאר בחו״ל בכדי לסיים את הלימודים שלכם? לא נכון. כיום בארץ יש הרבה תכניות לימוד מתאימות להם אפילו בשפה אנגלית. בנוסף למרכז הבינתחומי הרצליה [IDC], אפשר ללמוד באנגלית לקבל תואר ראשון באוניברסיטת תל-אביב, אוניברסיטת בר-אילן, מכון לב ירושלים, ועוד. יש תכניות כמו התכנית באנגלית ללמוד לתואר שני בניהול עסקים בטכניון ויש שלושה בתי ספר לרפואה איפה לומדים בשפה אנגלית. יש גם תכניות מכינות לבוגרי תיכון הרוצים ללמוד בעברית.

אתם סובלים באוניברסיטה מהאטנישמיות משונאי יהודים? אז עזבו את זה כבר ועלו ארצה! אל תרגישו שאתם בורחים מזה כמו פחדנים. אלא תתייחסו לעליה לארץ ישראל כריצה בכיוון ארץ מולדתכם היחידה.

האם אתם חושבים שצריכים להשאר בחו״ל בכדי להשפיע לממשלות שלכם? זה גם לא נכון .אין שום צורך כבר לאירגונים כמו אייפק ואיי די אל ואחרים בטעם ״הסברה.״ יש רק תפקיד אחד לאירגונים כאלה: לעודד ולעזור לכל יהודי [אמיתי] לעלות ארצה.

ואפילו אם אתם עדיין טוענים שצריכים לעבוד לתעונות ״הסברה,״ לרוב מכם אפשר לעשות פעולות כאלה כאן בארץ.

ומה עם הדתיים כאלה שאין להם תירוצים אפילו? אתם פשוט רוצים לשבת בסלון על הספה לצפות את החדושות בטלוויזיה או באינטרנט ולהתלונן שאנחנו שבארץ לא פועלים לפי רצונותכם? ואתם טוענים שאנו חייבים לעשות את מה שאתם דורשים מפני שאתם שולחים אלינו כסף? חוצפה! לכם אני אומר לחסוך את הכסף ולהשתמש בזה כדי לעלות ארצה. אתם רוצים להשאר בגלות ולהמשיך להתלונן? אז אומר לכם את שני דברים: א׳ לא אכפת לימהתלונות שלכם וב׳ בהצלחה!

אני לא טוען שכולכם שלא רוצים לעלות לארץ מולדתכם היחידה רשעים בטעם רש״י. חס וחלילה. לא כולכם. ואני מדגיש את המילה ״ארץ.״ אני לא כותב ״מדינה.״ מדינת ישראל היא פשוט הדרך והכלי הנוכחי הנותן ליהודים לעלות לארץ ישראל להתיישב כאן ובעיקרון להגן עלינו עד החזרת מלכות בית דוד.

בשנת תש״ע/2010 הר געש אילנדי מנע מיהודים מלחזור ארצה. כמות אירועי שינאת יהודים ממשיכים לעלות. רה״מ נתניהו בדרך לסגור את נתב״ג. מה עוד צריך לקרות לפני אתם תחליטו כבר לעזוב את הגלות?

נכון. אתם צריכים להחליט לעזוב את הגלות לפני שאתם תעזבו את הגלות.

22 And Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven; and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days; 23 they did not see each other, nor did any rise from his place for three days; but all of Israel had light in their dwellings. 24 And Pharaoh called to Moses, and said: 'Go, serve the Lord; only your flocks and your herds be stayed; your little ones will also go with you.' (Ex. 10:22-24)

Rabbi Shlomo Yitzhaqi [Rash"i] asks:

And why did He bring darkness upon them?

Because there were evil people among the Children of Israel in the same generation who did not want to leave, and they died in the three days of darkness in order that the Egyptians would not see in their downfall, say even they are getting struck like us.

Esser Agaroth (2¢):
There are many Jews still living in galuth (the diaspora/exile) who do not want to make aliyah (immigrate to Israel). Many of these Jews have forgotten that exile is a punishment (Rabbi Moshe Lichtman in his book Eretz Yisrael in the Parsha). No, I'm not talking about the Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) communities. The Haredim in the diaspora do acknowledge this and want to leave. They pray three times each day that the Messiah will come to save them and take them out of exile. Most of them believe that The Holy One, Blessed Be He, Himself expelled us from the Land of Israel; therefore only He, Himself can return us by way of His Messiah. They regard the restoration of the State of Israel as an act of rebellion, not as a sign that God has opened the gates in order to return us to the Land. I recommend to my brothers in these communities to read the book Em HaBanim Smeicha by Rabbi Yissachar Shlomo Teichtel hy"d. The rabbi addresses all such questions and concerns typically raised in Haredi communities regarding mass aliyah.

But what are the reasons why Modern Orthodox Jews do not make aliyah? Why won't native Israelis living abroad return? Why won't new immigrants to Israel, who have since "returned home" to galuth, come back? They say they do not like how the government operates, nor how it treats its citizens. They say they are frustrated that the Israeli Supreme Court controls the State of Israel more than the Knesset (Parliament)? These Jews who have left their Homeland say they cannot been able to deal with government bureaucracy. Were these Jews also unable to deal with the culture here? Were these Jews also unable to deal with different Jews from other countries?

All of these are not reasons at all; there are jus lousy excuses, despite of all of their claims and despite of all the failures of various movements and organizations claiming to be "Zionist." And I would like to emphasize my use of the word "land," and not "state," in the context of aliyah.

And what about all you other Jews abroad who specifically identify as "Zionist?" What are your excuses? Do you need to stay abroad to care for your elderly parents? Are your ex-spouses not allowing you bring your children to Israel with you, even for part of the year? Such challenges are completely understandable. So for now I am not addressing you, except to recommend that you not give up your efforts and investment in finding a solution.

And what about those of you without responsibilities, such as caring for elderly parents and guarding over the health and education of your children? What are your reasons excuses for not making aliyah?

Do you believe the Israeli Government to be too right-wing for you? Do you believe the Israeli Government to be too left-wing for you? Then come here to be part of transforming it. Invest your lives in your only, true Homeland, and not in your temporary dwelling places of refuge of the non-Jewish nations. 

Do you (native Israelis included) think you need to stay abroad to finish your university studies? No, you don't. There are many university programs in Israel, many of which you can study in English. In addition to the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya [IDC], it is possible to study in English for a bachelor's degree from Tel Aviv University, Bar-Ilan University, Machon Lev and Machon Tal in Jerusalem, and more. There are programs like the English MBA program at the Technion, and there are three medical schools where students study in English. There are also preparatory programs for high school graduates who want to study Hebrew.

Are you targets of anti-Semitism Jew-hatred at your school? So get out already and make aliyah! Don't feel that you're running away like cowards. Instead, view aliyah as running toward your only, true Homeland. 

Do you believe you need to stay abroad in order to lobby your governments on behalf of Israel? No, you don't. There is no longer any need for organizations such as AIPAC and ADL and others dedicated to "Hasbara" (PR/propaganda for Israel). There is only one role for such organizations: to encourage and help all [real] Jews to leave the countries of their exile.

And even if you still claim that you need to work in "Hasbara" and lobbying, most of you can do your jobs here in Israel.

And what about those of you, especially the Modern Orthodox who don't have any excuses? Are you just going to sit on the couch watching the news on TV or the Internet and complain about how those of us in Israel, ON THE FRONTLINES, are doing things the way you believe we should? And you claim that we have to operate the way you tell us to, because of all the money you send us? Hutzpah! (Such Gall/Nerve!) To you, I say, "Keep your money, save it up, and use it to make aliyah." Do you prefer to remain in exile and just keep on complaining? Then I have two more things to tell you: 1) I don't care about your complaints and 2) Good luck to you!

I am not saying that all of you who don't want to make aliyah to your only, true Homeland are evil, as  Rash"i suggests above. God forbid. 

In 2010, an Icelandic volcano prevented Jews from returning to Israel from their Passover vacations. The number of incidents of hatred of Jews continues to rise. Prime Minister Netanyahu on his way to closing Ben Gurion Airport. What else needs to happen before you decide to leave the exile?

True, you must decide to leave the exile, before you can actually leave it.
