במוצאי שמיני עצרת / שמחת תורה תשפ״ד בישראל -- 7 באוקטובר 2023 למניינם -- הדלקנו את הניידים והמחשבים שלנו ומייד למדנו על הטבח והתקפת טילים שביצע חמאס מעזה.

אלה מאיתנו שהיו מחוץ לטווח טילים היו בהלם, אך עדיין ידעו להצטייד ולבדוק שהמקלטים פתוחים. אחרים היו בטלפון כדי לתכנן יציאה מישראל. חלקם היו כל כך נואשים, עד שהם עלו למוניות ונסעו לירדן ואז עלו לטיסות בעמאן.

כמה יהודים, ממוצא מארה"ב יקשיבו לאזהרות ממשל הנשיא טראמפ?

אלה שיצאו בלילה לפני שנתיים וחצי היו ברי מזל כי הם הצליחו לחזור ארצה, כלומר, אלה שחזרו.

וגם אנו ראינו המון של אזרחי ישראל במאבק לעלות לטיסות בכיוון השני, רבים מהם כדי שיוכלו להתייצב לשרת במילואים.

זאת לא הפעם הראשונה שיהודים מתמודדים עם ההחלטה האם להשאר פה בארץ או לברוח. זו גם לא הפעם הראשונה שיהודים נמנעו מלחזור מחופש בחו"ל. זוכרים את התפרצות הר הגעש באיסלנד בשנת 2010? היא עיכבה את החזרה לישראל מהמערב באמצעות האוויר במשך שבועות.

וכך, יהודים מתמודדים עם אותה החלטה. האם תישארו או תלכו? האם תדבקו במולדתכם האמיתית היחידה, או שתטוסו חזרה למצרים לאמריקה?.

אין זה צירוף מקרים שישראל ניצבת בפני מתקפה אפשרית מצד איראן, ושגם אנו עוד מעט מציינים את ניסיון השמדת עם ישראל בידי האימפרית פרס שנכשל. אגב, המתקפה העתיקה הזו תוכננה על ידי צאצא של עמלק, נכדו של עשיו. לכן אנו קוראים את ״זָכוֹר, אֵת אֲשֶׁר-עָשָׂה לְךָ עֲמָלֵק וגו׳״ (דברים כה,יז-יט) בשבת הזו לפני פורים.

אנו חוגגים את ישועתנו ניצחוננו על ידי הקב״ה ואת בליל שני/יום שלישי הקרוב, ובליל שלישי/יום רביעי בירושלים. אם היו יהודים עדיין בבירה העתיקה של האימפריית פרס (איראן) שושן, הם גם היוהחוגגים את פורים בליל שלישי/יום רביעי.

ההיסטוריה הזו כולה מוצגת במגילת אסתר, שתיקרא הן בלילה והן במהלך יום הפורים. זה הזמן ליהודים בארה"ב וברחבי העולם לחזור ספר זה או ללמוד אותו פעם ראשונה.

When the Jewish holiday of Shemini Atzeret 5784 finished in Israel at sundown, and Simchat Torah was about to begin outside of Israel -- that's October 7, 2023 to non-Jews -- we turned on our phones and computers to learn of the attack and massacre perpetrated by Hamas along our border with Gaza.

Those of us out of missile range were in shock, but still knew to stock up, and to make sure we had access to bomb shelters. Others were on the phone arranging to leave to Israel. Some were so desperate, the took taxis to Jordan, and flew out from the airport in its capital of Amman.

How many Jews, originally from the U. S., and still U. S. citizens, will heed the warnings of President Trump's administration?

Those who left that night two and a half years ago were fortunate. They were able to return to Israel eventually, that is, those who returned.

We also saw a mass return of Israeli citizens struggling to get flights in the other direction, many so that they could report for IDF reserve duty.

This is not the first time that Jews have been faced with the decision of whether to stay or to flee. It is also not the first time that Jews were prevented from returning from vacationing abroad. Remember the 2010 eruption of the volcano in Iceland? It delayed re-entering Israel from the West by air for weeks.

And so, Jews are faced with this same decision. Will you stay or will you go? Will you adhere to your only, true homeland, or will you fly back to Egypt America?

It is no coincidence that as Israel faces a potential attack from Iran, we also approach the anniversary of the attempted annihilation of the Jewish People at the hands of the Persian Empire. Incidentally, this attack was manipulated by a descent of Amaleq, a grandson of Esau (The West). For this reason, we read, "Remember what Amaleq did to you...." (Deut. 25:17-19) on the Shabboth before Purim.

We commemorate our salvation by The Almighty's intervention, and our victory, with the holiday of Purim, celebrated in most of the world on this coming Monday night/Tuesday day, Tuesday night/Wednesday day in Jerusalem. If there were Jews still in the ancient capital of the Persian Empire (Iran) Shushan, they would also celebrate Purim on Tuesday night/Wednesday day.

This history is all laid out in Megillat Esther, the Scroll of Esther, which will be read both at night and during the day of Purim. This would be a good time for Jews in the U. S., and around the world to review this book.
