סרטון ויראלי מציג את הרגע שבו שני אריות ים הסתערו דרך קהל ב-La Jolla Cove בסוף השבוע, ומבהילים אנשים. אבל מומחים אומרים לערוץ KGTV שיונקי הים לא ממש רודפים אחרי הצופים.

"התפיסה היא שאריה הים רודף אחרי אנשים, וזה בכלל לא זה", אמר אריק אוטן, סגן נשיא לפעולות זואולוגיות בסי וורלד (פארק עולם הים) סן דייגו, לערוץ KGTV.

על פי מרכז המחקר לדולפינים, החופים והמפרצונים של דרום קליפורניה עשויים לראות עלייה באריות הים מחודש מאי עד חודש יולי כאשר החיות בעונת הרבייה.

אז התשובה לשאלתכם הבאה היא לא, אנחנו לא גרנו בשכונה היהודית העשירה. אלא גרנו הרבה יותר בפנים הארץ משכונת לה הוֹיה. וכן, זו שכונה, ולא עירייה עצמאית.

בחוף הזה אני שחיתי במירוץ ימי, עברתי חלק מאימוני הצלה וצפיתי בשקיעה מהצוק מעל החוף.

אני זוכר כשלא היו אריות ים בחוף הזה. בדרך כלל ראו אריות ים שוכבים על רציפים. ואז הם השתלטו על חלק החוף במפרץ הזה. אנחנו ילידי העיר ידענו שכדאי להתרחק מהם. לפעמים התיירים התקרבו יותר מדי.

לעתים קרובות כשאני מספר לילידי ישראל שאני עזבתי את העיר הזו כדי לעלות ארצה, הם תוהים למה או אפילו אומרים לי שאני השתגעתי.

אני מספר להם שסן דייגו הייתה מקום נהדר לגדול בו, לחקור, לטייל עם חברים, ומקום נהדר למסיבות או בחופים או במועדוני לילה. בנוסף לחופים, העיר גם ליד מקסיקו, לא רחוק מהמדבר, ורק כמה שעות נסיעה ללוס אנג'לס או לפאלם ספרינגס (עין דקלים).

אבל היא לא ארץ ישראל, המולדת האמיתית היחידה של העם ישראל.

A pair of rowdy sea lions were caught on video chasing beachgoers at La Jolla Cove and causing panic on a crowded beach.

A viral video shows the moment two sea lions charged through a crowd at La Jolla Cove over the weekend, sending people into a frenzy. But experts tell KGTV the sea mammals were not actually going after the beachgoers.

"The perception is that the sea lion is chasing after people, and that’s not it at all," Eric Otjen, vice president of zoological operations at SeaWorld San Diego, told KGTV.

Southern California’s beaches and coves may see an increase in sea lions from May through July as the animals enter breeding season, according to the Dolphin Research Center.

"And they all have territories. And some of them don’t have territories. So, the smaller guy running through the crowd of people is the one just looking for a spot to breed," Otjen said. "And the bigger male that you see come in at the very end of that video is the one whose territory he was trying to take over." (cont.)

I was born and raised in San Diego. But my parents did not take us to La Jolla Cove very often, since it was good, extra 20 to 30 minutes farther to drive, than getting to the closest beach to home.

So, the answer to your next question is no, we did not live in the wealthy Jewish neighborhood. We lived significantly more inland than the La Jolla neighborhood. And, yes, it is a neighborhood, not a city.

As a kid, I swam the rough water competition here, did some of my lifeguard training here, and watched a sunset or two from the top of the Cove.

I remember when there weren't any sea lions on this beach. Sea lions could usually be found sunbathing on docks. Then they pretty much took over part of the Cove. We natives knew to stay away. The tourists? Not so much. I am pretty sure that there signs, though.

Often when I tell native Israelis that I left this city to move to Israel, they wonder why or they even tell me that I lost my mind.

San Diego was a great place to grow up, to explore, to show friends visiting from another city of state, and a great place to party. Besides the beach, it's next to Mexico, not far from the desert, and only a couple of hours to Los Angeles or Palm Springs.

But it's not Israel, the only true homeland of the Jewish People.

נשלחו אליי הסרטונים האלה. הם דומים לסרטוני אילוף החתולה שלי. הבנראה לי שהביטוי הזה "עופות נוצה נוהרים יחד" לא שייך כל-כך לעורב. אלא אולי העורב, הידוע כציפור נבונה, לומד לעקוב מאחרי היונים מפני שבני אדם (מקורות האוכל) נמשכים לציפורים החמודות כאלה ודווקא לא לעורבים.

אני לא בטוח.

בכל מקרה, הסרטונים נמצאים כאן כדי להציג את האפשרות ללכוד יונים בקלות למען השרדנות אם (חס וחלילה) בעתיד תתקיים בעיה באספקת המזון במצב מלחמה או דומה כזה.

כנראה חל איסור לצוד ולשחוט יונים לפי חוקי מדינת ישראל. אני לא בטוח. לפחות יכול להיות איסור כזה באזורים ו/או בעונות מסויימים. ולכן כדאי לברר את העניין לפני שיוצאים לשטח לצוד או אפילו להאכיל את הציפורים.

The crow is not kosher for Jews to eat; the pigeon is.

The above videos were sent to me. They are similar to my kitten training videos. 

It seems that the phrase "Birds of a feather flock together" doesn't quite fit the crow so much. But perhaps the crow, well-known as a particularly intelligent bird, learns to follow the pigeons because humans, ie. sources of food, are attracted to them, and not necessarily to crows. 

I'm not sure.

In any case, the videos are here to show the possibility of capturing pigeons easily for survival's sake, if, God forbid, a future problem with obtaining food during a state of war or similar situation.

In the meantime, I suggest that it could very well be against the law to hunt and slaughter pigeons in the State of Israel. I'm not sure. At least there may be restrictions in certain areas and/or seasons. And so, I recommend getting clarification about this before going out to hunt or even feed the birds.

הבוקר במהלך הנסיעה שלי מהמרכז לעבודה בירושלים, שני שוטרי משטרה עלו לאוטובוס וקראו "בדיקת מסכות, בדיקת מסכות!"

כמה ימים לפני זה נראה לי שפתאום כולם הקפידו לחבוש מסכות. אני לא מאמין שזה בגלל הפחד שנוצר ומתפשט על ידי תקשורת החדשות, כולל סילוף הסטטיסטיקה. אלא בגלל ההודעה מכוחות הממשלה על פריסת שוטרים בליבוש רגיל בכדי לאכוף את תקנות המסכה.

וגם השבוע ייושמו מחדש כמה הגבלות קורונה שהוטלו בעבר, כולל מגבלה על מספר הנוסעים באוטובוסים בין עירוניים. בארים, מועדוני לילה וחדרי כושר נסגרו. למסעדות ובתי קפה הותרו עד 20 לקוחות בפנים, ו -30 בחוץ, עם שמירת מרחק חברתי. והקנס בגין אי חבישת מסכה במקומות ציבוריים עלה מ-200 ש"ח ל-500 ש"ח.

לאחר שאחד השוטרים הסתכל לבנדנה (צעיף קטן) שלי, הוא המשיך במעבר. לא יכולתי לשמוע את מה קרה בין השוטרים לאחד נוסעים. נשמעה לי כעימות בינם לאישה שלא חבשה את המסכה שלה. אני הצלחתי לצלם רק תמונה אחת של אחד השוטרים.

וכאן אני לא מגלה לכם את קו אוטובוס הזה או המיקום איפה האירוע הזה קרה בכדי להגן על ביטחוני.

האישה התבקשה לרדת מהאוטובוס למרות שמיד היא שמה את המסכה שלה. אני מניח שהשוטרים סילקו אותה בכדי לתת לה דו"ח ללא לעכב את האוטובוס.

אני מקווה שהממשלה תמשיך לנהוג כמו בתקופות אחרי פיגויי איבה. לקפוץ מהר כדי להוכיח לאזרחים שהיא "עושה משהו," ואז אחרי כמה זמן נרגעה עד שהיא לא עושה כלום.

מעקב קורונה
כשהאוטובוס נכנס לירושלים שמתי לב לשלט הזה שכבר ראיתי כמה פעמים בעבר. השלט ע"י זזים "תנועה אזרחית של ערבים ויהודים שמקדמים יחד דמוקרטיה, שוויון ואזרחות פעילה." בעיקר תנועת זזים פועלת נגד תכנית המעקב ע"י השב"כ למען בריאות הציבור. חשוב לציין שגם אנשי השמאל וגם אנשי הימין מתנגדים לתכניות כזו.

דיקטטורת קורונה?
ועכשיו עבר החוק בכנסת לחדש את תכנית מעקב של השב"כ,... "לטובתנו" כמובן.

לצערנו הממשלה לא מוותרת על שום הזדמנות לשלוט על אזרחיה. ולכן כדאי לשים לב: החוק הנוכחי לתת לשב"כ לעקב מאחריהם לא ייבטלו בעתיד אלא הממשלה פשוט תפסיק לדבר עליו.

טיפשות קורונה? בכוונה או לא בכוונה?

הנה סיפור העובר ממקום למקום בפייסבוק (שם מספרת הסיפור נמחק), עוד דוגמא כיצד הממשלה נוהג לשלוט עלינו.

אני לא בטוח במאה אחוז שהסיפור הזה אמיתי. אחרי שגילו את התשלומים השונים מקופ״חים לבתי חולים בארה"ב, 39,000 דולר למוות מנגיף קורונה ורק 13,000 דולר בגין גורם מוות אחר, אמת הסיפור הזה ממש אפשרית.

ואסור לשכוח את הדרך הקלאסית לשלוט על האוכלוסייה: ליצור מחלוקות בין קהילות שונות ולצפות אותן לריב להתנהג כאילו להביא שלום בין אדם לחברו. אבל באמת הם פועלים בכדי לשמור את מצב המחלוקת ביניהן (הפרד ומישול). כפי שציינתי בתחילת המאמר הזה, בארים, מועדונים, וחדרי כושר הושבתו. עם זאת, בתי כנסת וישיבות יישארו פתוחים. (עדכון: YNET: ח"כ יפעת שאשא ביטון, יו"ר ועדת הקורונה, הגישה בקשה לקבל ראיות המחייבות את סגירת חדרי הכושר והברים.)

התקשורת כבר משפיעה לקוראיה וצופיה להאשים את חברי הכנסת החרדים בהחזקת הממשלה כבת ערובה. לדעתי האמת היא שכוחות השלטון (לא דקווא אנשי הממשלה) פשוט מעודדים לקהילות שונות לכעוס אחת על השניה ודווקא על הקהילה הזו והאשמה עליה בעדינות בהפצת הנגיף. האם שכונות בתל אביב הוסגרו? בכלל לא כמובן, ולמרות מספר המקרים הגובר והולך. ומה קורה למסתננים הלא שומרים את חוקי קורונה בדרום תל אביב? הם נעשנים? לא.

ויש לכוחות השלטון דרך נוספת לשלוט עלינו: סגירת מקומות המיועדים להרגיע אותנו, להמיך רמת הלחץ שלנו, ולחזק הבריאות שלנו. ועוד הגבלה הוכרזה השבוע. שירות האוטובוסים הציבורי מפסיק בשעה 22:00.

אני חייב לשאול,למרות שאני מפחד לשאול: מתי הגישות לפארקים, לשבילים בטבע ולחופים יוגבלו שוב? כבר ראינו איך אנחנו התמודדנו כתקועים בבית במהלך עונת האביב. אנחנו ישראלים שממש אוהבים לבלות זמן בחוץ או בעיר או בטבע. כמה זמן נוכל לסבול מהסגר חדש? ולהיתקע בבית במהלך חודשי הקיץ החמים יותר?

נראה לי לא הרבה זמן.

Corona Police
This morning during my commute to work in Jerusalem from Central Israel, two police officers boarded the bus announcing "Mask check, mask check!"

A few days before this, it seemed that everyone had become strict about wears masks all of a sudden. I do not believe it was because of media fear mongering, and manipulation of statistics. Rather, it was because of the announcement of plain clothes policemen being deployed to enforce the mask regulations.

Today was the first day that some of the previously lifted, corona based restrictions, were to be re-implemented, including a limit on the number of passengers on intercity buses. Bars, clubs, and gyms were shutdown. Restaurants and cafes were now allowed 20 customers inside, and 30 outside, with social distancing. And the fine for not wearing a mask in public had risen from 200 NIS  ($58) to 500 NIS ($145).

After one of the officers stared at my bandanna, it passed muster, as is should, and he proceeded down the corridor. I was unable to hear the officers confront one woman not wearing her mask. The single photo of the officer was all I succeeded in taking. The woman was asked to leave the bus, which she did. But, I saw that she was wearing a mask. My educated guess is that even though she had a mask, she was not wearing it. And that they asked her to leave the bus, so they could issue her a citation without delaying our bus.

For my own protection, I will not reveal the bus line nor location where this took place.

Corona Tracking

Coming into Jerusalem, I noticed this sign (second image above), I had seen several times before. But, this time I took a closer look. Picturing Members of Knesset, the sign says: "Don't capitulate. Stop the Corona Dictatorship"

The sign is from Zazim, "a movement of Arabs and Jews promoting democracy, equality and active citizenship." Mostly, it appears that in this campaign the Zazim movement is working against the Shabba"k's (secret police) corona surveillance program, for the sake of "public health." It is important to note that both those on the left and the [real] right oppose such plans.

And, guess what? The Knesset just approved the re-implementation of the Shabba"k's corona tracking,... "for our own benefit," of course.

Corona Government Action
And just now, the Knesset passed yet another law, allowing the Cabinet to enact "emergency" laws without full Knesset approval, presumably related to hindering the spread of the corona virus.

Will we eventually forget the existence of this law as well?

Corona Incompetence? (Maybe Not) 

Now here is a story going around Facebook (translation of the last graphic above):

The mother of a friend of mine did a corona test at the beginning of the week. Magen David Adom (Red Star of David) staff came to her home, and did the test. And... the swabs were left on the table... They just forgot..

Two days later she received a call from the Ministry of Health, [saying] that she was positive!!!

She said to the representative: Sir, the swabs that you took are still here on my living room table...

The representative was quiet for half a minute, and then divulged to her: "It's written in the computer - the tests were lost - tell the patient that the test is positive!!!"

Do you understand??!!How many people were supposed to go into isolation, feel the pressure, lose jobs, not go to school and more...
Because of this?

I cannot verify the truth of this story (name of author erased). With the differential payouts to hospitals reported in the U. S., $39,000 for a corona death and $13,000 for other cause of death, it makes a lot of sense.

Corona Conquest
And last but not least, the classic way to control the populace: Divide and conquer. Keeping various communities at each other's throats. As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, bars, clubs, and gyms have been shutdown. However, synagogues and yeshivos (religious schools) will remain open.
 (Update: YNET: MK Yifat Shasha Biton, chair of the Knesset corona committee, is requesting evidence necessitating the shutdown of gyms and bars.)

The media has already begun blaming the Haredi (ultra-orthodox) members of Knesset for holding the government hostage. But, I believe the truth is that the powers that be, and that does not necessarily mean the government, is simply building on the hatred of this community and blame subtly put on it for the spread of the virus. Have any neighborhoods in Tel-Aviv been put on lock down? No. Of course not, in spite of the increasing numbers of cases there. And what about the non-compliant, illegal aliens in South Tel Aviv? Nothing.

The closure of places designed for reduction of stress, blowing off steam, and supporting our health is just an added control benefit for them. It was just announced that public bus service will not stop after 10:00 PM.

I hate to ask when access to parks, trails, and beaches will be limited again. We already saw how we Israelis, who love being outdoors, dealt with being stuck inside during the cooler months of March and April. How long we will be able to suffer being stuck inside during the summer months?

Not for very long.

במעשה נדיר של נורמליות, ממשלת ישראל,דרך משרד הבריאות שלה, אישרה לא לעטות מסכות עד לסופ"ש בכיתות ובמרחב הציבורי, בגלל הטמפרטורות הגבוהות מאוד ולא רגילות לעונה הזו, והקבלה שהיתרונות הבריאותיים ללא ללבוש מסכה יותר חזקות מכל היתרונות של ללבוש אחת בחום כזה הן.

אתמול ראיתי שרוב האנשים בתל אביב עשו שימוש בפטור הזמני הזה של המסכה. ולא ראיתי את אף אחד חבש מסכה, מתלונן בפני מי שלא לבש, אפילו לא באוטובוס או בחללים סגורים.

נמאס לנו.

התמונות (למטה) צולמו ביום ג', יום אחד לפני שהוסר האיסור לשחות בים .אין שום ספק שכמה מכם יגידו שהישראלים פשוט עושים את מה שרוצים לעשות ושלא אכפת להם מהחוקים. לפי הנסיון שלי זה לא נכון. ולפני שאחד מכם יתחיל לבזות את מגזר מסוים בעמנו, חילונים, דתיים לאומיים, חרדים, או לספר עליו בשבח כאילו הם גיבורים, אני אגיד לכם שהיו משתתפים מרחבי המגזרים למרד השקט הזה.

הממשלה אסרה לנו להיכנס לים, למרות שהנגיף הזה לא יכול לחיות במליחות הגבוהה. הממשלה אמרה לנו לא לשכב בחוף תחת השמש למרות שהנגיף ייהרג בחום כזה, ולמרות שהלחץ שלנו יכול לרדת באווירה הרגועה הזו, ולמרות שהחמצן החמצן המיונן לשלילה באזור הים יכול להיות לטובת הבריאות שלנו. כל זה היה יותר מדי לנו לסבול מזה ולסבול במשך תקופה ארוכה מדי.

אני כבר כתבתי על כך שאין לנו סובלנות עד כדי כך להאלץ להישאר בבית. אישית העדפתי ללבוש בנדנה, והיתה לי הזדמנות להסביר לצעיר אחד שהעיר עליו, שזה מזכיר לנו על דמות של שודד שבסרט ישן. במקרה שמעתי אל קרי קאסידי בפרויקט קמלוט גם להציע בנדנה כחלופה למסכה.


אני גם שמח לכתוב ששוטרי המשטרה לא הקפידו ללבוש מסיכות בחוץ.

מצד שני, אולי אנחנו מאמינים את כל מה שיוצא מהתקשורת הנשלטת ע"י כוחות השלטון, ופשוט מרדנים ולא אוהבים את זה כשאומרים לנו מה לעשות, ובמיוחד על ידי הממשלה שהושבעה רק אחרי שלוש בחירות, בהנחה שהממשלה היא בעצם בשליטה.

בכל מקרה, בואו נראה אם כוחות השלטון יצליחו לגרום לנו לחזור ללבוש מסיכות אחרי הטמפרטורות יירדו לרמה הרגילה לעונה.

אני מתפלל ששמירת "ריחוק חברתי", והשתקת קולותינו באמצעות דרישת המסכות לא ישפיעו באופן שלילי כל-כך עלינו ועל תרבותינו הישראלית של מגע.

Health officials say waiver in place until end of week after parents threaten to close down schools if no change made to mask rules amid soaring temperatures

The Health Ministry on Tuesday has temporarily lifted the requirement for citizens to wear protective masks in open public spaces and in classrooms until Friday, March 22 [May 22], due to the extreme heatwave.

Israel is beset by what may be one of the longest and most extreme heatwave ever recorded this week, with temperatures expected to reach around 40°C [104°F] for at least the next six days. (cont.)

Esser Agaroth (2¢):

In a rare move of normalcy, the Israeli Government, specifically its Ministry of Health, has temporarily lifted the mask requirement in open spaces, and in classrooms. This is due to the unusually high temperatures for this season, and realizing that the health benefits not wearing a mask in such heat outweigh any benefits of wearing one.

Today I saw that most people were taking advantage of this temporary mask exemption, and I did not see anyone wearing a mask, complaining to anyone who wasn't, even on the bus or in closed spaces.

We're sick of it.

The photos (above) are from Tuesday, one day before the prohibition against swimming in the ocean was lifted. Some will no doubt suggest that Israelis simply do what they want. My experience is the opposite. And before you start to demonize any particular segment of the population, secular, modern orthodox, Haredi (ultra-orthodox), or for that matter put anyone in particular on a pedestal,  this quiet revolt had participants from across across the spectrum.

Being told not to go into the sea, when this virus cannot survive in the high salinity, being told not to lay out in the sun where the virus would be killed in heat, our stress level would get reduced in the relaxed atmosphere, and we would benefit from the negatively ionized oxygen, was just too much for us to take for too long.

I have already written about how we have little tolerance for being forced to stay inside. And, personally, I preferred to wear a bandanna, explaining to one young man who commented on it, that it brings up the image of a bandit from an old movie. This was also suggested as an alternative by Kerry Cassidy at Project Camelot.

I am happy to say that the police were lax with their own masks as well.

On the other hand perhaps we believe everything being fed to us by the powers that be, are just rebellious and do not like being told what to do, especially by a government, which took over a year and half to form, assuming the government is actually calling the shots.

Either way, it will be interesting to see just how easily they will be able to force us back behind are masks, once the temperatures return to normal.

I pray that keeping us a part through "social distancing," and silencing our voices through being forced to don masks will not permanently, negatively influence us and our touch oriented Israeli, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean cultures.

ואפילו יש גם הזדמנות לכתוב על העובדים הערביים במלון, כולל המנהל העומד בקבלה, במלון ואיך הם יכולים לעבוד ללא צורך לדבר הרבה בעברית, ונהנים מהזכויות שלהם כאזרח ישראל, אני לא כותב על זה.

אני גם לא כותב נגד העניין המגוחך שמדינת ישראל היא מדינה של אָפַּרְטְהַיְד (הפרדת אוכלוסייה על בסיס הגזע) .

אני נותן לאנשי ״הסברה״, פעילים למען הזכויות ל (ארץ מולדת), ולעוד יהודים ביחסי תלות שיתופית (codependent בלועז) עם הגוים לדאג על עניינים האלה.

Yes, Jordan is still here, that made-up kingdom, born of the British, to curtain the once, and always, impending tantrum of its rulers, the Hashamite family, cousins of the Saudi Royal Family.

But, first off, why on earth would this hotel have a water cooler supplied with water, presumably from the Golan Heights, when the Ein Gedi bottled water company, is just up the street? OK, it's not exactly up the street, but pretty close.

Well, at least this hotel still only recognizes one gender. The solaria are not separated based on gender due to religious reasons necessarily, although religious Jews and Arab Muslims certainly appreciate this. Rather, they are separated just like gym locker rooms are separated. Some people also simply like to sunbathe in the nude. Don't you hate tan lines?

No rooftop nudity for me today, although I did have the rooftop to myself for the hour I was there. Nevertheless, I could have if I had chosen to.

When I arrived last night, Yussef (not his real name) was on duty at the reception desk. It made sense, since there was a large group of Arabs tourists staying at this hotel.

Even though this would be a good opportunity to write about these Arab guests, enjoying their rights of Israeli citizenship, and the obvious decent livelihood, allowing them to enjoy some luxury time at the Dead Sea, I won't.

Even though this would also be a good opportunity to write about the Arab employees, including the desk manager, enjoying their rights of Israeli citizenship, and jobs, I won't.

Nor will I write against the ridiculous notion that Israel is an "apartheid state."

I will leave these topics to the emotionally co-dependent Hasbarites, and so-called Indigenous Rights advocates.

Why?

1. Because so many Jews, both in and outside of Israel, seem to think this a good thing that Arabs, not to mention Christians from the Former Soviet Union and Ethiopia, refugees insurgents from various countries, and any number of other individual and groups of fake Jews, are becoming increasingly integrated, enjoy, equal "democratic" rights within the State of Israel, which apparently wants to be a nation just like all other nations. In so many ways, this attitude is not in line with Torah. שנאמר לא תחנם. And this negative mitzvah (commandment) is only one of these ways.

2. Because, once and for all, we must wake up, and stop caring about what the goyim (nations) think about us already, and start caring about what we think of ourselves. And dare I mention the Holy One, Blessed Be He?

It doesn't matter what anyone thinks of us. It doesn't matter if one more, or one million more of them comes to love and accept us, or if they will continue to hate us. עשו שונא ליעקב Esau hates Ya'aqov. And his spiritual descendants will continue to do so, until we finally learn to love, accept, and respect ourselves. This includes having the courage to defend ourselves, and not being embarrassed and sorry about it afterwards, resulting in our compensating our enemies, and rebuilding their infrastructure.

And now, back to the made-up Kingdom of Jordan. I don't see it on the map above. Do you?

Israel Back to the Beach 5777!

Beach season has been well-underway in Israel, and that includes the Hof HaNifrad (Separate Beach) in Tel-Aviv. Tel-Aviv's religious beach is located just north of the Hilton Hotel, down the hill from Gan HaAtzma'ut Independence Park.

Men's days are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Women's days are Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Other separate beaches in Israel divide the days up like in Tel-Aviv. Others stagger the mornings and afternoons instead.

One of the criticisms of the beach's designation as a religious/separate beach is the lack of a mehitzah (divider) on its south side. It was dilapidated and in disrepair, and so why finally taken down, but has yet to be replaced. From where I was standing, nothing "exciting" can be seen anyway. Nevertheless, it should be rebuilt.

Ironically the next beach south which can be seen right underneath the Hilton Hotel has been gradually developed into the unofficial gay beach. You can see the rainbow roofed shaded areas which were just never taken down after an annual celebration.

This beach sports a volleyball net, which was in use most of the time I was there on the day  of these photos.

So was the gym equipment.










But, the most exciting scene of the day was the "purple flag," indicating the presence of meduzot (jellyfish). There were quite a few of them too. I, myself, was stung, or shot at, or whatever jellyfish do.

The are very hard to see, like glass in water. Even though when they get beached, their color is a milky white.

The lifeguards will occasionally catch them to show the beach goers, especially the kids, in order to educate them about this beach hazard.

One thing I noticed which was new this year was at the snack bar. It seems that it still carries the usually ice cream novelties and junk food. But, it has also added four different beers on tap!

Be careful, though, as alcohol can be dehydrating.

בישראל חוזרים לחוף הים!/Israel Back to the Beach!

ערב שבת הייתי בחוף הים הדתי בתל-אביב. המציל הודיע ברם קול לכל הנמצאים שנלכד מזודה מזן נדיר בדלי ומי שרוצה לבוא לראות את זה יבוא.

Erev Shabboth, I was at the separate (religious) beach in Tel-Aviv. The lifeguard made an announcement on the load speaker that they had a meduza (jellyfish) of a not so common species in a bucket, and that anyone wanted to come see, should come.

The meduza's color is distorted here, due to the shadow. It is actually a milky, translucent white.

It is meduza season now, so be careful. You do not want to get stung by one of these!

Should Private Beaches Be Allowed In Israel?

We need to do everything possible so that in July and August people will be able to go to the sea without having to spend a lot of money. We need to give people options to tour and enjoy at reasonable prices."

Esser Agaroth (2¢):

OK, so MK Miri Regev earns some points here. It is not the first time she has earned kudos from Esser Agaroth. That was when she showed public support for Jewish Prayer on the Temple Mount.

Her concern with fairness across the board, regardless of financial status is admirable. Quite frankly all government officials should operate this way. Everyone should be able to enjoy the beach. The beach belongs to everyone.

I, myself, have always wondered how some of these structures have been able to pop up suddenly on the beach, blocking off large sections of it, in order to charge for admission. I was unaware that anyone was actually allowed to own land in Israel, unless one was fortunate enough to have purchased it during Turkish (or British? rule. I always seemed a bit shady to me.

However, to my embarrassment, I must say that many beaches in Israel are filthy. It is not even because of irresponsible beach-goers per se. I usually go to some very isolated beaches, and they are filled will trash, coughed up by the Mediterranean. Whether from Israel's industry and residents, from other irresponsible countries, from cruise ships, or from all of the above, I cannot tell. But, whoever is responsible, beach-goers and volunteers alone do not seem to be able to keep up with it.

Clean up costs money. Cities provide some of that service. However, I have seen plenty of areas in Israel, incorporated and not, in total neglect. Someone has to clean it sometime, either the government, volunteers, or private companies.

As a Californian, liberals and conservatives alike are aware that taking care of our environment benefits everyone. Whether you believe it affects our health, whether you believe it is an investment returned several times over in tourist spending boosts to local economies, or whether you believe we need to take care of the environment, just because we need to, it benefits everyone.

And so, compliments to MK Regev, but I hope she does not just REACT, like so many MK's seem to do (on the so-called right and the left), putting band-aids on everything, avoiding the often necessary surgery.

So far in MK Regev's tenure in the K'nesseth, she seems to have been fairly thorough. (Did I miss anything?) So I expect that she will remember that uncovering the shadiness of "private" beaches.

But, someone is going to have to pay if we want our beaches to remain clean, both for us, and for the tourists with big wallets. And those someones are Israeli taxpayers.

Back To The Beach

Rosh Hodesh HaHamishi 5769

I made it back to the beach yesterday during PTH. For those of you not from the beach that "Prime Tanning Hours."

The beach was pleasant enough, playful, with good energy, and no "mean-and-nastiness."

The only major "incident" which occurred. One of the lifeguards called me "Abbaleh" (Daddy).

Oh, no. He did not just call me that. Oh, yes, he did.

He asked my to pick up a ripped, inflatable water toy, which had been abandoned, and throw it in the trash for him. I just acknowledged him with a short hand wave, and did what I was asked.

(SIGH)

One lesser incident was when the same lifeguard warned some kids to come back closer to shore, as they were drifting out toward the jetty. When that didn't work, he just said, "OK, have fun with the meduzot."

That was effective.



And in case you did not know what this structure was on the beach, there was gigantic sign to inform you of both its identity and function.

I thought that the ice cream menu, stacks of snacks, drinks, and a cash register made it a dead giveaway. But what do I know. Then I realized, the sign was so big so that it could be seen from away.

Duh.

Beach Grievance

24 of the Third Month 5769

Well, there I was in Tel-Aviv, minding my own business, my only desire to exercise my unalienable right to go to the beach, have sand kicked in my face, matkot balls fly at my head, buy overpriced junk food and drinks, and have obnoxious things yelled at me by notoriously anti-religious lifeguards, who seem to think that each and everyone of us is named "Yankiv."

Then I encountered it, the wall. There was a wall blocking the pass over to the separated beach (See the notes below) from HaYarqon and Nordau Streets. I turned south, believing that I would eventually be able to cross over to the beach through Independence Park, or so I thought.

A blaring sign near the Hilton Hotel read that the park was closed for renovations. The entire park was sealed off. So, I returned northward, turned left on Havaquq HaNavi Street, and finally arrived. It was 4:30 already. I like going this late. The crowds have thinned, and the sun is a bit less intense.

I laid down to relax. I saw two business men chilling out over drinks, two men doing yoga, a man and his 20 something son enjoying each others company, and a Hassidishe man doing an effective job of relieving his young boys' fear of the water. All of the matkot games were located far away from me. I only had sand kicked in my face once, and only had to block one oncoming beach ball.

The lifeguards were not in the least bit obnoxious, and even mentioned a pasuq or two through the loudspeakers. It came from a religious guard, and was not said sarcastically.

As I prepared to leave, I encountered another "only in Israel" moment. There were not one, but two minyanim, one after the other, for tefillath minhah.

My afternoon at the beach was capped off with the typically beautiful Israeli sunset on the Mediterranean.

I had nothing over which to be agrieved, and could no longer complain about the minor, necesary detour.

Some beaches, like Tel-Aviv, divide up the days:
Men - M, W, F; Women - S, T, Th.
(Dan Buses #1, 2, 4, 9; Qavim Buses #55, 56 stop here, on one block away on Ben-Yehudah Street. Dan Bus #5 stops on Nordau and Dizengoff.)

Others, like Ashdod and Netanyah, divide up the days, and alternate mornings and afternoons:
Men - S, T, Th mornings and M, W, F afternoons
Women - S, T, Th afternoons and M, W, F mornings.

The break between morning and afternoon for Ashdod is 12:30 - 1:30pm; for Netanyah it is 1:00 - 1:30pm.

Summer Is Here!

If you're in the U. S., the official start of the summer season began two weeks ago with Memorial Day weekend. If you're in Israel, you know that the summer season fades in very gradually, in several stages. Then all of sudden, it's hotter than heck, and there's no denying that summer is here. This year it took it's own sweet time to get here.

The onset of summer to me, and countless other Israelis, means it's time to hit the beach. Whether you live in Tel-Aviv, and can walk to the beach, or live farther inland and have to tremp or bus it in, those of us of with tanorexia have already begun working on our tans. I got a late start this year. I usually begin as early as March. Here is a tip from yours truly, a former California lifeguard:

When applying sunscreen, do not forget your nose, ears (how many of you thought of your ears?), under your eyes, cheekbones, shoulders, and collarbones, areas receiving direct sunlight. If you're sitting in a chair at the beach all day, don't forget the tops of your thighs and knees. Wear a hat, and apply lip balm. After sun exposure, shower with soap, to keep your skin clean. After patting dry, apply (color-free, scent-free) body lotion. I suggest something with aloe. Consult your dermatologist, dermatological nurse, pharmacist, or herbalist (preferably those who live in beach cities) about the right skin products for you.

Also, don't forget your UVA/B protective sunglasses, and for goodness sakes, drink plenty of water, adult men at least five liters on beach days.

Here's another friendly beach tip/reminder, wherever you live.

Don't just clean up after yourselves. Pick up two of three extra pieces of trash, and if you see that that trashcan is overflowing, pack up your trash and take it with you. Dump your old charcoal into an appropriate receptacle. Don't just bury them. Someone still might end up burning his feet on your coals.

If you're an artsy, nerdy environmentalist like me, you'll also be on the look out for sea glass, to line the bottom of your fish tank or Shabbath candle holders or what have you.

Also...

NEVER go into the water without someone with you or watching you from the beach. It doesn't matter how strong a swimmer you are, or think you are, or how well you know how to navigate currents. All it takes is a bump on the head or getting tangled up in seaweed, for your strength and know-how to become virtually useless.

And, here in Israel...

Watch out for meduzoth.
