YNET Opinion: Israel’s religious turn risks transforming the conflict into a religious warEsser Agaroth (2¢):
Opinion: Israel has long sought to prevent its conflicts with its enemies from taking on a religious dimension; But the growing role of religious ideology in policy toward the Palestinians is further reducing the chances of a solution
Dr. Michael Milshtein | October 04, 2026
For years, Israel hoped that its conflict with its enemies would have a national character: that it would be based as much as possible on a territorial dispute between peoples and as little as possible on ideology and religion, which would mean an all-out war with no prospect of a settlement.
It seems that this is yet another piece in which I will have to respond to it, paragraph by paragraph. However, you do not have the patience for that, here are the themes Milshtein covers, which I have already addressed in the past, along with relevant links. "...there is nothing new under the sun." (Eccl. 1:9) Click on the ones which interest you.
- This is a religious conflict for the Arabs. Although they use other methods besides religious ones, having recently learned from the west how to use its own strategies against them.
- Palestinians are, and always have been, pawns.
- This conflict between Torah and anti-Torah has been going on not for 80 years, not for 200 years, but since leaving Egypt
- What is Zionism? What is the only source which justifies Zionism?
- Does the Israeli Left really believe in democracy?
- Why doesn't the Left have more children, ie. future voters? Instead they facilitate the influx of non-Jews.
- However much I may disagree with Betzalel Smotrich on strategy, I agree with the basis of his perspective: Torah.
- The opposite direction to religionization is assimilation into a globalist, Western society, nullifying our nature and mandate to be a separate and distinct people.
The main challenge in this regard is fundamentalist Islam, which, based on divine command, prohibits recognition of Israel and permits, at most, a hudna — a temporary truce that can be broken, as happened in the October 7 attack. Dealing with non-Islamist actors has not been easy either, particularly when it comes to genuine acceptance of Israel's existence. But it has been proven that political agreements can be reached, some based on territorial compromise.Well, Milshtein is right about one thing, Islam. But political agreements being reached on territorial compromise? Wrong. Whatever anti-Torah beliefs he has about giving up pieces of the Land of Israel, surely he must see that he making my argument for me.
Each agreement made with the Arabs is only a hudna in their eyes - a temporary truce that can be broken. Long-term, these agreements mean nothing to them.
Don't believe me? For the umpteenth time, I suggest that you see the dream maps of a Palestine hidden in plain site, within the emblems of, not only Hamas, but the Palestinian Authority's ruling Fatah Party. All of them want all of our Land, including Tel Aviv. Their end game is the destruction of Israel.
Maybe Milshtein believes that Arabs will eventually come around to the understanding of Western culture being superior to their own, and will "see the light."
But, what will actually happen, after attempting to dialogue with Arabs, over and over again, expecting different results, ie. insanity, the blindness of their pride will cause them to fall.
Well, let me tell Milsthein something. This desire has existed for thousands of years
Our desire for redemption has been fulfilled twice. So, why not a third time? *I am attempting to use Western reasoning here, since I am guessing that Milshtein, regardless of his background, will not respond well to a Torah-based line of reasoning.
Crying out to HaShem to save us sounds very similar indeed to our cries out to Him from our enslavement in Egypt (Ex. 3:9). Time and time again, the Israeli government, whether left or right, has demonstrated its failure to protect us, instead kowtowing to the wishes of theinternational community goyim.
So, from a psychological perspective, it sounds quite healthy to break free from a strategy which has proven to be ineffective in the long-term. Instead of the insanity of repeating the same mistakes over again, expecting different results, we are searching for different approach.
But, Milshtein should not worry. The Left wing of the Erev Rav is putting up the same fight against Torah, as it has been since leaving Egypt.
Does Milshtein view Smotrich's ideas from the Torah as primitive? Since they are not in line with Western ideals, they are inherently bad?
Whether Milshtein knows it or not, he is the perfect example of the subtle, and insidious, form of assimilation, the form of which most Jews are unaware.
I will not even get into how seeing the West as the ideal culture to strive for completely discounts the wisdom and culture brought by Jews to Israel from North Africa and the East.
We can see these young men and women waiting for tremps (rides) and buses to Tel-Aviv night clubs on Saturday nights, often after "suffering" through yet, another 'boring' Shabbat. So much for mamlakhti (State loyalist) religious education. Too many mixed messages, I suppose.
The Land of Israel is the homeland of the Jewish People, and no other. However which was you try to slice, this is Zionism.
Now that you have failed to control those who view Torah on a higher level as State law, including desperate threats of "re-education," and with a kippah slapped on it, no less, now what?
We have heard the fear mongering before, incitement against the Torah-observant, sometimes Haredim, sometimes [real] settlers, sometimes even against the "well behaved," fully indoctrinated, mamlakhti "Zionists."
The growing role of religious ideology in policy toward the [Arabs identifying as] Palestinians not reducing the chances of a solution, but only reducing the chances of a solution that Milshtein wants. Thank God.
Either he believes in the importance of placating the so-called international community as strategy, or that it is incumbent upon the Jewish People to be integrated into a globalist society.
Does he realize that the end game of such an integration is the erasing of Israel as a people, separate and distinct. The Torah mandates that we remain as such. And so, here we have one of the main conflicts between a way of life being Jewish, and a life of doing pretty much whatever we want.
I like to remind people of the term Erev Rav, the mixed-multitude which accompanied us out of Egypt is based on the root word for mix, as in the mixed-multitude. The Erev Rav is all about mixiing things together, the opposite of keeping things separate and distinct, national borders, peoples, religions, and genders. Even our Hebrew language has been inundated with English, ever since the late Prime Minister Sharon's application of the adopted into Hebrew word "relavanti" over 20 years ago.
In other words, Milshtein's vision for Israel does not seem much different than the international community's vision for us: assimilation into a globalist society, dominated by Western "progressive" ideals. But, perhaps Milshtein would allow us some Jewish sprinkles on top of his Western progressive, superior culture, as long as they were not too Jewish.
Milshtein does not seem to be anything less than leftist extraordinaire, Yossi Beilin 2.0, who also happened to have been an architect of the Oslo "Death" Accords.
There really is nothing new under the sun.
1 This point was raised by a colleague at the opening faculty meeting of a yeshiva high school in the West Bank in תש״ס/2000, shortly before Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's ascension of the Temple Mount.
Recently, Israel's own conduct has contributed significantly to this longstanding challenge. Since October 7, religiously charged ideas have played an increasingly prominent role in its policies, particularly on the Palestinian issue. Such ideas have always existed, but they have never held such a dominant position as a national compass. It seems that religious fervor to Milshtein is a result of searching for answers, a sense of helplessness and the desperate desire to be rescued by an outside force, and that this is the result of our collective trauma. Does he also think that pining for geulah (redemption) is a manifestation of our collective delusion.
A turbulent reality, with no investigation of the failures or treatment of the collective trauma, has persisted for three years, providing fertile ground for embracing ideas once regarded as unrealistic and even delusional. Concepts and goals drawn from biblical times and associated with the religious Zionist movement are thus being injected into the life of a modern state, without any serious debate over what it means for the state to rely on the belief that we are living in an age of miracles and approaching redemption.
Well, let me tell Milsthein something. This desire has existed for thousands of years

But, Milshtein should not worry. The Left wing of the Erev Rav is putting up the same fight against Torah, as it has been since leaving Egypt.
To Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich's past statements about the need to wipe out the Palestinian town of Huwara, establish a Joshua doctrine — under which there are no non-Jewish citizens with equal rights, only "gentiles" — regard Arab Israelis as "citizens for now" and rely on a "God willing" economy and Torah law as in the days of King David, have now been added a promise to fund the construction of a Jewish Temple, as well as telling the Saudis to go ride camels in the desert if they continue demanding negotiations with the Palestinians as a condition for normalization and telling Europe to go to hell over sanctions and criticism of Jewish violence in the West Bank.OK. So Milshtein will never accept that these "settlers" -- with a nickname designed to separate them from mainstream, Israeli society -- are defending themselves, because the IDF is incapable or unwilling to do so sufficiently. We all get that. So, I will not even bother...
The West Bank is a central arena in the "religionization" of Israeli policy, reflected in the sanctification of holding onto the territory under divine command and in the attitude toward Palestinians — non-Jews who are encouraged to leave, preferably "voluntarily." In the extraterritorial realm of the West Bank, norms are developing that are gradually spilling over into the rest of the country and affecting the circumstances and future of all Israelis. Daily life in the West Bank illustrates how the conflict is becoming fundamentally religious, as seen, for example, in the burning of mosques and churches and the deepening Israeli hold on numerous religious sites that are increasingly being accorded the status of existential assets for Israel.Well, gee. I suppose you and your ilk should have annexed the West Bank long ago, huh? That way you could have had more control over its youths' education and ideological development. You only managed to tackle some of the youth -- the bored suburbanite youth -- most of whose parents cannot even answer their children's question, "Are we living on Jewish land or Arab land?"1. The answer "It's complicated" no longer cuts it.
We can see these young men and women waiting for tremps (rides) and buses to Tel-Aviv night clubs on Saturday nights, often after "suffering" through yet, another 'boring' Shabbat. So much for mamlakhti (State loyalist) religious education. Too many mixed messages, I suppose.

...and remember all the commandments of the Lord, and do them; and that you do not go after your own heart and your own eyes, after which you use to go astray; (Num. 15:39)I will be the first to admit that a Western, non-Jewish way of life is much less restrictive than a Jewish way of life. Esau (The West) did whatever he wanted, while his brother Ya'aqov (Israel) did his best to study and to achieve what HaShem wanted of him. I said I would refrain from using Torah logic in this post. But what can I say? The Torah touches every aspect of a Jew's life, whether Milshtein can fathom that or not.
I like to remind people of the term Erev Rav, the mixed-multitude which accompanied us out of Egypt is based on the root word for mix, as in the mixed-multitude.
