רפובליקני בסנאט רוצה לשים קץ לאזרחות כפולה ולדרוש מאזרחים להגיש "נאמנות בלעדית" לארה"ב.

הסנטור ברני מורנו, רפובליקני מאוהיו, מתכנן להציג חקיקה ביום שני שתדרוש מכל אזרח אמריקאי בעל אזרחות זרה לבחור בין שתי המדינות, כך נודע לפוקס ניוז דיגיטל. כמו כן, הדבר ידרוש שאם אזרח אמריקאי יבקש אזרחות זרה בעתיד, אותו אדם יוותר למעשה על אזרחותו האמריקאית.

מורנו, שנולד בקולומביה אך מאז ויתר על אזרחותו הקולומביאנית, אמר בהצהרה לפוקס ניוז דיגיטל, "אחד הכבוד הגדולים ביותר בחיי היה כשנהייתי אזרח אמריקאי בגיל 18, ההזדמנות הראשונה שיכולתי לעשות זאת...."

עשר אגורות (2¢):
כנראה רוב מכם חושבים שאפשרות כזו מופרכת. אבל, כמה פעמים בעבר אנו חשבנו את זה, וזה בכל זאת התממש?

כשחשבתי על ויתור על אזרחותי ארה״ב, כמה עולי אמריקה אמרו לי שדרכוני ארה"ב משמשים כוויזה לכל החיים, ושהיתרונות של שמירה על אזרחות אמריקאית עולים על העלויות. כמובן זה היה לפני תוכנית פטור הוויזה די חדשה לאזרחים ישראלים.

האם האמריקאים האלה יודעים שארה״ב יחד עם אריתריאה, היא המדינה היחידה שמצפה מאזרחיה המתגוררים במדינות אחרות לדווח על הכנסותיהם מדי שנה? ולדווח על נכסיהם שאינם אמריקאים? אני מניח שהם יגלו זאת בסופו של דבר.

וְיַעֲקֹב נָסַע סֻכֹּתָה, וַיִּבֶן לוֹ בָּיִת; וּלְמִקְנֵהוּ עָשָׂה סֻכֹּת, עַל-כֵּן קָרָא שֵׁם-הַמָּקוֹם סֻכּוֹת. וַיָּבֹא יַעֲקֹב שָׁלֵם עִיר שְׁכֶם, אֲשֶׁר בְּאֶרֶץ כְּנַעַן, בְּבֹאוֹ, מִפַּדַּן אֲרָם; וַיִּחַן, אֶת-פְּנֵי הָעִיר.(בראשית לג,,יז-יח)

וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלֹהִים אֶל-יַעֲקֹב, קוּם עֲלֵה בֵית-אֵל וְשֶׁב-שָׁם; וַעֲשֵׂה-שָׁם מִזְבֵּחַ--לָאֵל הַנִּרְאֶה אֵלֶיךָ, בְּבָרְחֲךָ מִפְּנֵי עֵשָׂו אָחִיךָ. (בראשית לה,א)

וַיֵּשֶׁב יַעֲקֹב, בְּאֶרֶץ מְגוּרֵי אָבִיו--בְּאֶרֶץ, כְּנָעַן. (פרשת השבוע וישב, שם לז,א)

עשיו חזר אל הארץ שהקב״ה נתן לו. יעקב אבינו הלך אל הארץ שהקב״ה נשבע לו, ארץ ישראל. יעקב עובר דרך סוכות, ואז הגיע לשכם - שהערבים והשמאלנים מתעקשים לכנות נבלוס. ואז יעקב חוזר דרומה לבית אל. 

* הכינוי נבלוס בא מהכינוי הרומי פלביה ניאפוליס. אין פּ בערבית לכן מסלפים את ביטוי השם.

יעקב מצליח להתנתק לחלוטין מאחיו. התורה משתמשת באותיות זהות (וישב) למילים "לשוב" ו"לשבת". למרות זאת, אין בלבול לגבי מי שייך לאיזה ארץ.

בפרשה האחרונה של ספר בראשית (פר׳ ויחי), יעקב הולך לעולמו, ובניו מביאים את גופתו ממצרים לקבורה בחברון (שם נ,יג). עשיו מגיע כדי לערער על בעלות על מערת מכפלה. בסופו של דבר המחלוקת מסתיימת במותו של עשיו בידי חושים בן דן (תלמוד בבלי, סוטה יג,א). בגרסה אחרת של אירוע זה, מציעים שיהודה הרג אותו.

אפילו אחרי מות יעקב, התורה מאשרת שארץ ישראל היא מורשת עם ישראל.

האם חושבים שהמחאותיו של עשיו הפסיקו במותו? הן לא הפסיקו. במשך 2,000 השנים האחרונות, צאצאיו של עשיו חיים במציאות ברכתו של יצחק אביו אליו, ״...וּפָרַקְתָּ עֻלּוֹ מֵעַל צַוָּארֶךָ״ (בראשית כז,מ).

כיום יש בלבול עצום לצאצאי יעקב. הם שואלים את עצמם ״מי אני?״ ״מה הזהות שלי?״ ״לאיזה מקום אני שייך?

אפשר לחשוב מה שרוצים לחשוב על יהודים כמו חסידי סאטמר ונטורי קרתא. אבל ציריכים להודות שהם שומרים על הפרדה רוחנית מצאצאיו של עשיו, מתפללים בנאמנות ומחכים לביאת המשיח שיחזיר אותם למולדתם האמיתית היחידה.

כמה יהודים בארה"ב גם מתפללים לקבל עזרה כדי לחזור לארץ ישראל? כמה יהודים בארה"ב משתדלים לעלות ארצה בכלל?

במשך שנים, אנו עומדים בפני בחירה זו. אך למרות שהיא יותר ברורה כל יום, הרבה מתעקשים בסירובם להכיר אות:

להמשיך להתמודד עם האתגרים הפיזיים והרוחניים בארץ השייכת לעשיו? או לחזור למולדתו האמיתית היחידה של יעקב אבינו, ולהשקיע את דמנו, יזענו ודמעותינו בבנייתה מחדש.

כתוב ״וַיֵּשֶׁב יַעֲקֹב, בְּאֶרֶץ מְגוּרֵי אָבִיו--בְּאֶרֶץ, כְּנָעַן״, ולא בארץ מגורי אחיו הרע, ולא בארץ אמריקה.

אל תקרא אמריקה אלא עם-ריקה.

FIRST ON FOX: A Senate Republican wants to end dual citizenship to require citizens to submit "exclusive allegiance" to the U.S.

Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, plans to introduce legislation on Monday that would require any U.S. citizen who has foreign citizenship to choose between the two countries, Fox News Digital has learned. It would also require that if a U.S. citizen seeks a foreign citizenship in the future, that person would effectively give up their U.S. citizenship.

Moreno, who was born in Colombia but has since renounced his Colombian citizenship, said in a statement to Fox News Digital, "One of the greatest honors of my life was when I became an American citizen at 18, the first opportunity I could do so...."

Most of you will think this to be farfetched. Yet, how many times have we have said, and then it came to fruition anyway?

When I was thinking about renouncing my American citizenship, some Jews from America, now making their lives in Israel, said that their U. S. passports served as a lifetime visa, that the benefits of retaining U. S. citizenship outweighed the costs.  That was before the all too recent visa waiver program, which includes Israeli citizens.

Did these Americans also happen to know that the U. S., along with Eritrea, is the only the country expecting its citizens living abroad to report their incomes annually? What about reporting their non-U. S. holdings [FBAR]? I guess they will eventually find out.

This proposed bill begs some questions. If this bill were ever to pass, what will American Jews do? What will native Israelis, who have acquired U. S. citizenship, do? What will their children, who were born in the U. S., do?

"So Esau returned (וַיָּשָׁב) that day on his way unto Seir" (Last week's Torah portion Wayishlah Gen. 33:16) 

"And Jacob came in peace to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Paddan-aram; and encamped before the city. And he bought the parcel of ground, where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem's father, for a hundred pieces of money." (ibid. 17 - 18) 

"And God said to Jacob: 'Arise, go up to Beth-el, and dwell there; and make there an altar to God, who appeared to you when you fled from the face of Esau your brother.'" (ibid. 35:1)

"And Jacob dwelled (וַיֵּשֶׁב) in the land of his father's sojourns, in the land of Canaan." (This week's Torah portion Wayeshev ibid. 37:1)

Esau went off to the land which HaShem had assigned to him; Jacob went off to the land assigned to him, the Land of Israel. He passes through Sukkoth, and spends time in Shchem -- which Arabs and leftists insist on calling Nablus, a bastardization of the Roman designation Flavia Neapolis -- then returns south to Beth-El.

Jacob successfully separates himself from his brother completely. The Torah uses identical letters for the words "returned" and "dwelled." Yet, there is no confusion over who belongs in which place.

In the last Torah portion of Genesis, Jacob dies, and his sons bring his body out of Egypt for burial in Hevron (ibid. 50:13). Esau shows up to contest the ownership of the burial plot. The matter is eventually settled with the death of Esau at the hands of Hushim the son of Dan (TB Sotah 13a). Another version of this event, suggests that Yehudah killed him.

Even after Jacob's death, the Torah confirms the destination of the Land of Israel.

One would think that Esau's protests would die with him. They do not. For the last 2,000 years, Esau has been living in the reality of his father Isaac's blessing to him, "...you will shake his yoke from off your neck" (Gen. 27:40).

Today there is a tremendous amount of confusion among Jacob's descendants. There are constantly asking themselves who am I? and Where do I belong?

Say what you will about Jews such as Satmar Hasidim and Neturei Karta. But at least they are maintaining a spiritual separation from Esau, faithfully praying and waiting for Mashi'ah (Messiah) to return them to their only, true homeland.

How many Jews in the U. S. can say the same?

For years, we have been facing this choice. Yet even though it becomes increasingly evident, many persist in their refusal to acknowledge the existence of this choice.

Go on dealing with the physical and spiritual challenges in a land belonging to Esau? Or return to Jacob's only, true homeland, and investing our blood, sweat, and tears in rebuilding it.

It says, "Jacob dwelled in the land of his father's sojourns, in the Land of Canaan," not in the land of his evil brother, not in America.
