The Embarrassments of Last Night's Ultra-Orthodox Demonstration

English follows the Hebrew.

Police block Hertzl Blvd. at Rabbi Tzvi Yehuda Street. Why didn't they also block Yirmyahu and other streets farther away from the demonstration?

YNET Breaking News: Over 1,000 Haredi protest arrest of yeshiva student in Jerusalem
Gilad Cohen, Haim Goldich | Published: 12.22.20 , 17:00

Over 1,000 ultra-Orthodox protesters blocked several main roads in Jerusalem on Tuesday, protesting the arrest of a 20-year-old yeshiva student who failed to report to the IDF recruitment office.
Esser Agaroth (2¢):
First off, this demonstration was much larger than reported here. It is important that this be pointed out. You will know why in a moment. Yirmyahu, Sarei Yisrael, Yaffo, and Hertzl Streets were all blocked off. This is essentially the area the Jerusalem Center Bus Station and Navon Train Station, the Light Rail Bridge, and main entrance into the City.

Second, I was to be very clear here. I am not against the expression of free speech, not by Haredim, not by Leftists, not by Settlers. I am not against blocking roads. After all, that what was done in 2005 to protest the expulsion of Jews from Gaza, which includes Gush Qatif, and the Northern Shomron (Samaria). In fact, then Rosh Yeshivah of Merkaz HaRav Kook Rabbi Avraham Shapira ztz"l called hist students to leave the Beth HaMidrash (study hall) in order to do so. Years before, that streets were blocked by Moshe Feiglin's Zo Artzeinu in protest of the Oslo [Death] Accords.

The embarrassments of which I write are not because of the demonstrating Haredim (so-called "ultra-Orthodox"). Please read on, to learn what I mean.

Embarrassment #1
What was the police even doing there?? I will tell you, as I was there. The police sprayed a water cannon a couple of times, the water having a foul odor. Toward the middle of the demonstration, police helped direct traffic,... a little bit. Thirty men were apparently arrested.

The police knew this was coming. The police have had experience with demonstrations by Haredim and others in this exact location. So, I ask again, what were they even doing there... besides nothing? They weren't trying to remove anyone from the street. Rather, it seemed like they were there to make sure that everyone else had the chance to get angry and increase their hatred against Haredim. Even though this group, Peleg Yerushalmi, is only one segment of Haredi society, and not even a very popular one these days. Do not even get me started on the Leftist-controlled, Israeli News Media.

Embarrassment #2:
A Haredi young man, Shekna Rotenberg, was arrested for failing to report to the Israeli Defense Forces [IDF] as part of the enlistment process. But, a [real] Religious Zionist was killed, quite possibly due to police negligence or worse. Why wasn't the demonstration over the police involvement in 16-year-old Ahuviya Sandak's death as big as last night night's demonstration by Peleg Yerushalmi? Where were all of the so-called Religious Zionists when the real Religious Zionists, often referred to as Hilltop Youth, were demonstrating? Why were only 100 demonstrators reported to have been present? Perhaps that was just a lie as well, and there were actually more. Nevertheless...

Could it be that the Mamlakhtim (Orthodox, yet diehard State loyalists who often confuse Israeli Law with Torah) do not actually see Hilltop Youth as part of their community?

Could it be that Mamlakhtim resent that many Hilltop Youth also refuse to enlist in the IDF, a military body responsible for kicking them out of them out of their homes and land, and destroying their synagogues?

There are plenty of other embarrassments to go around. But, I will leave them for now, and will certainly write about them in the future.
