Arabs on Buses and Other Problems

Arabs on Ariel Buses, Another Problem

This morning, I happened to read Arabs on Ariel Buses, Another Problem by Shilo Muse Batya Medad, before I left on my way to the Shomron (Samaria) to spend Shabbat. I shared this comment on her blog post:

Memorial for Rabbi Itamar Ben-Gal hy"d
This Friday I left early before Arab workers are supposed to get off from work. Or at least that's what I thought. I managed to get the last seat. Even though I had to convince the Arab sitting next to me to give me the entire seat, and not just the edge.

There was already one religious, young woman standing, who did not want to sit next to an Arab or next to any man at all. The driver left the station where I got on with six or seven passengers standing up. This bus is permitted to travel with a maximum of ten standing passengers.

Rabbi Itamar Ben-Gal hy"d
I was surprised that the driver did not stop at the Morasha Interchange (16) or the Yarkon Wharf (17). Perhaps this was because he thought there were already ten passengers standing. The driver was Jewish. You'll have to decide for yourselves if that made any difference in preventing the bus from being overcrowded.

Finally, we reached the Ariel junction, where I got off and walked to the trempiada (hitchhiking spot) to continue my journey. At the trempiada, I saw a memorial to Rabbi Itamar Ben-Gal hy "d, who was murdered at this very spot nine months ago, yet another reminder of our problems with Arabs.

Sem Girls Singing on the Bus

English follows the Hebrew.

Would someone please 'splain to me why American "sem girls" are singing holy texts with ta'amei hamiqra (trope, Torah musical notation) on the bus?

According to one of these young women, they had an "exam" the next day.  And they had to practice? Or they had to study? That was not so clear to me.

An exam? In ta'amei hamiqra?

Or perhaps, they were taught to use ta'amei hamiqra as a technique to memorize passages more efficiently? This is the only possibility which would make sense to me. It is, or course, permissible for women to read publicly Megillath Esther FOR OTHER WOMEN. However, they were definitely not practicing the ta'amei hamiqra for Megillath Esther.

Do women learn ta'amei hamiqra in order to teach Humash (Torah) to boys? That would, indeed, be very disappointing, and not just the thinly disguised feminism, but also the lack of men willing to teach first and second grade boys. This is yet another reason why Religious Zionists are sending their boys to learn in Haredi Talmud Torah.

But, I digress...

I asked the young woman closer to me if she thought that maybe people on the bus wanted to hear them singing. And, actually, I was asking her because they were too loud, and not because of qol isha (the prohibition related to women's singing). After all it was public bus, and we live in a "pluralistic democracy." (eyes rolling)

She responded that if I wanted her to stop, then I should just ask her. I told her that I wasn't going to do that. It was a public bus, and she could do what she wants. But, that maybe she may want to consider those other passengers around them, and then decide what to do.

I don't know. Was that passive-aggressive?  (wink)

Mazal Tov to the New Mayor Of Jerusalem

English follows the Hebrew.

Arieh King

Congratulations to Moshe Leon, Mayor of Jerusalem!

His victory shows us that the Haredim, together with the national religious, succeeded in electing aTorah-observant mayor, despite those Haredim who are disappointed with the Haredi leadership, the Haredim who apparently made a deal with the Ofer Berkowitz camp, and the modern Orthodox who are Haredi-phobic.

Yehonatan "Yoni" Yosef
Maybe Jerusalem's Torah-observant communities were able to unite just enough to do this. Or maybe the religious population is simply already large enough in size, to the point that it doesn't matter how many of them voted for Berkovich.

In any case, the will be more religious people in the Jerusalem City Council now than before.

So, it may be just be worthwhile for leftists to take my strategy recommendation to them to heart in order to win the next elections. Fat chance.

Also Mazal Tov to Arieh King, Chairman of the "United Jerusalem" organization, who has been re-elected to the City Council, maintaining his two seats together with freshment Councilmember, Yehonatan "Yoni" Yosef (Yachad). Councilmember-elect Yosef is the son of Rabbi Ya'aqov Yosef ztz "l and the grandson of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef ztz "l and is an activist for the recently reclaimed Shimon HaTzadiq neighborhood, along with other causes within Jerusalem.

Berkovitch is Dangerous for Jerusalem! Do not Vote for Berkovitch!

Here are some posters you can see hanging in Jerusalem...

Berkovitch is dangerous for Jerusalem!

He is for the Reform Movement in Jerusalem!
Ofer Berkovitch: "We will honor every person and each community which can function according to a world view, Reform, Arab, Jew. As mayor I will come to every community in order to give it the honor it deserves without any connection to religion or perspective." (October, 2018)

Fighting for sanctity of Jerusalem!

Berkovitch is dangerous for Jerusalem!

He is against supporting yeshiva students!
"You know how it is, our public continuously complains more and enlists into the military less. That's what we're fighting for."

Fighting for the sanctity of Jerusalem!

Berkovitch is dangerous for Jerusalem!

From the Hitorerut Party platform of Ofer Berkowitz: The Hitorerut movement will support the operation of public transportation on Shabbat, such as service taxis in order to allow freedom of movement in Jerusalem during the Sabbath.

Esser Agaroth (2¢):
We can talk about financial support for yeshiva students another time. In the meantime, do not read "financial support for yeshiva students" but rather just "yeshiva students."In other words, Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) or Torah observant in general. And so, why are there some Haredim who support him? I've already written about this in "Don't Vote for Berkowitch!"

Berkovitch's opinions regarding the the Reform Movement, the Arabs, and Shabbat should be enough to convince you not to vote for him.

If not, then I can't help you. But, I'll make a point of being there in five years to tell you that I told you so.

Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit, What have you done?

YNET: AG rules out house demolition for mentally ill terrorists
Tova Tzimuki, 11.01.18

Mandelblit determines a terrorist who suffers from mental impairment 'would not have the ability to rationally consider the real possibility the home he lives in would be demolished, and consequently decide against carrying out the terror act we wish to deter him from committing.'
Esser Agaroth (2¢):
Does Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit fully understand what he has done?

Perhaps he rules according to the State of Israel's laws to the letter. However, he has also just affirmed a [not so] new strategy for Arab terrorists:

Use only mentally ill and disabled individuals to carry out terror attacks, and they save the families from any risk of their houses being destroyed.

Thank you, Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit for fulfilling your duty in the role of a government official. (eyes rolling)
