Is This The Worst Bus Company In Israel?

Aluf Sadeh (Ramat Gan): the second bus

Esser Agaroth (2¢):
Is this the worst bus company in Israel?

The bus from Tzfat (Safed) to Bnei Braq and Ramat Gan (Tel Aviv suburbs) was supposed to leave the central bus station at 11:40. There was some sort of breakdown along the way. According to passengers who had already boarded, they had to wait for a replacement bus. The replacement bus, they were on, arrived at the station around 12:00, at which time those of us who were waiting boarded. The bus left the station, and picked up passengers along the way within the city. However, once we got close to leaving the city, the bus driver announced that there was a problem with the replacement bus.

After a short stop on the side of the road, for the driver to communicate, presumably, with his dispatcher -- he was speaking Arabic -- we made our way to the bus company's lot. We all got off the bus, and proceeded to follow the driver around from bus to bus, checking which one was operational. He was on the phone the entire time, presumably receiving instructions as to which one should work, and which one to try next. He tried at least five buses. Most of us stopped following him around, and just waited for him to settle upon one. He finally choice one. So, we boarded it.

I happened to notice that the man in the "service vehicle" was of no service whatsoever.

Immediately, complaints began over the hot air coming out of the vents. We waited for any improvement. There wasn't any. Some passengers were willing to continue on with the windows open. Others said it was dangerous with small children on the bus. I guess they would not have succeeded in suffering through the 104°F (40°C) summer days of my childhood without air conditioning.

In the end, we left the city. But not so fast. The driver stopped at Tzfat Junction. We waited for yet another replacement bus. But, when the fourth bus arrived, the door to the baggage compartment did not work on the right side. The left side worked. But this was determined to be too dangerous for when passengers needed to remove their baggages in the middle of bustling Bnei Braq. And so, we waited for another replacement bus.

In the meantime, several passengers disembarked, having arranged for alternative transportation or just given up.

We ended up leaving the Tzfat Junction at least an hour and a half behind schedule, but arrived at our destination without any more breakdowns or glitchs.

At the rest stop, I mentioned to the driver that he stayed calm throughout the fiasco. He said that works at a different branch, where everything is relaxed. That is what he is used to.

One breakdown can be forgiven. These things happen. Two is debateable. But, the need for four changes in buses?

You be the judge.

The Hope of Tu b'Av

English follows the Hebrew.

On Tu b'Av, I was on the bus, coming back from Tel Aviv at 1:00 AM. In back of me sat six high school boys talking.

What were they talking about?

One of the boys was recounting the story of of Qamtza and Bar Qamtza (TB Gittin 55b), a prominent midrash agadah (story), related to the destruction of HaBayith HaSheni (the Second Temple). I decided turn around,... casually. I did not see any kippoth (Jewish male head covering), only a couple of them had longish hair, one of them very long hair, the one recounting the story for them.

I heard nothing heretical, like one might expect from students of the secular Israeli state educational system. I supposed that they did not have to be secular. Maybe they went to a religious school, but did not wear kippoth while on vacation. Who knows?

They then went on to discuss how nothing belongs to us. The Holy One Blessed Be owns everything.

The secular-appearing man waving a rainbow pride fan sitting across the aisle from me chimed in. Although I cannot recall what he contributed to the discussion, I do remember that I happened to agree with him. The high school boys also seemed to accept what he had said.

Four of the boys got off the bus in either Givataim, a city not known for its embrace of Torah, or east central Tel-Aviv. It wasn't clear. The last two got off in a mixed modern orthodox, secular suburb.

You just cannot make this stuff up.

The curse of dying on the Tribes of Israel while wandering in the desert was imposed, carried out, and eventually removed on Tisha b'Av (9th of Av). However, the curse's removal was not recognized until Tu b'Av (15th), when the full moon proved that the ninth of the month had already passed without the annually expected, mass deaths.

In spite of the City of Tel-Aviv's ongoing battle against Torah, I had some of my hope restored the other night on Tu b'Av, definitely a well-needed boost after the sadness and depression of Tisha b'Av.

It's Just a Bus!

English follows the Hebrew.

הם אמרו, "!Just a bus" (רק אוטובוס!או "!It's just a bus" (זה רק אוטובוס!)

Esser Agaroth (2¢):
I was on the bus in Tel-Aviv recently. I was on the way to the beach, and then to an event. The bus got particularly crowded when a bunch of junior high and high school students got on. An Arab woman, dressed in fully modest Muslim garb, got on the bus shortly afterwards.

Mind you, there had just been an Arab terrorist attack. Four Jews were murdered in a shooting attack on the road near the town of Eli in Efraim, in Samaria. I have never witnessed any Arab act in a bold manner so soon after a terrorist attack. In fact, I have only ever seen the opposite

When I lived in Tel Aviv 25 years, Arabs stayed out of sight, for fear of getting beaten up, as I heard they were on the beaches of Netanya and elsewhere. Actually, I do not remember so many Arabs in Tel-Aviv at all back then, not even Arab workers, and not any foreign workers.

This Arab woman had the hutzpah (gall) to yell at Jewish kids after a terrorist attack.

Why was she yelling? Because the kids were making noise. Imagine that. Teenagers making noise on the bus. And Arab teenagers never make noise on the bus? I can wholeheartedly testify that Arab teenagers do, in fact, make noise on buses.

I see myself as being fairly sensitive to noise. Yet, what I heard was just your typical conversation level volume. There were just a lot of conversations going on simultaneously. The bus driver was certainly not bothered by it. And Israeli bus drivers are not at all shy about telling kids, and adults talking on their phones too close to the driver's seat, to be quiet. But this bus driver was more bothered by the passengers not moving to the back of the bus, in order to let more people on in the front.

Unlike the bus driver, I wasn't having it. This woman was being completely unreasonable. Furthermore she was yelling in English. (I sometimes seem to forget that English in the official language of Tel-Aviv, and not Hebrew. But that's another post for another time...) So, I began raising my own voice in Hebrew, telling her that this is Israel, where we speak the language of the Jewish People, Hebrew! To my pleasant surprise, no one said anything critical of my actions. No one told me to shut up, not even the bus driver I was sitting in back of. No one made even a single sour face at me.

"If you don't know English, that's your problem. You should learn English," she shouted, clearly indicating that she understood what I had said in Hebrew.

Actually, she's wrong. If things continue to go the way they are going, we should concern ourselves with learning Arabic, not English.

One or two kids of the on the bus attempted to respond to this woman in English, in spite of my proving that she understood Hebrew. They started saying, "Just a bus!" or "It's just a bus!"

I asked the kid standing next to me, probably in seventh or eighth grade, what exactly that was supposed to mean. Did it mean that it's just a short bus ride, it can be noisy when it's crowded, and just relax about it? He said yeah, that's right.

But it wasn't just a bus, and we shouldn't just relax. Nothing like this would have happened 25 years ago. Instead, the Arab would be suspected of being a potntial suicide bomber. And the Jewish high school students, even the secular ones, would have responded a lot more passionately, a lot more forcefully. They would have had an ounce of pride of being Jews, speaking a revived language, and in a homeland inaccessible to us, even forbidden to most of us for hundreds of years.

When will we finally decide to make being Jewish, speaking Hebrew, and living in our only, true homeland fashionable, even great again?

Soon, I hope and pray.

Ultra-Orthodox Man Harassed. Israel's Left Reveals its True Colors

English follows the Hebrew. It recommended to skim through the YNET article, focusing on the parts in red bold, as it is a little long.

YNET: Haredi abused on public bus in Israel: 'Go to the army, sexually ill deviant'
Victim of a slew of degrading verbal attack by a woman, is a reserve officer in the military; traveling to He served as a captain of a combat unit, but his fellow passenger publicly shamed him over his side curls and kippa

Kobi Nachshoni | 06.19.23

The ideological divide in the nation spills over into gratuitous hatred in Israel's streets: A man with an ultra-Orthodox appearance who was traveling on a bus in the central city of Hod Hasharon was faced with insults from a woman who accused him of not serving in the army and publicly shamed him – all because of his appearance. Even after the man corrected her and said that he was a reserve officer with the rank of captain in a combat unit, she continued to hurl insults at him, claiming that he was "sexually ill" and a "pervert."

Yonatan Elon Hirsch is an attorney working in the public sector, and a member of the Central District of the State Attorney's Office. On Monday morning, he boarded a bus in his hometown, as usual, when another passenger began ridiculing him because of his kippa, sidelocks, and ultra-Orthodox clothing, as she protested his alleged evasion of military service. In the video he took that was distributed on social networks, Hirsch tries to correct her mistake, but instead of apologizing, she continues to confront him and humiliate him.

The incident is not unusual. Tension has been growing between the secular and religious community, and in particular, the Haredi sector, who generally do not serve in the military. The divide has grown dramatically in recent months as the Haredi community, which is represented in the current government coalition by two Haredi political parties, supports the judicial overhaul; the courts have in general not supported the Haredi attempts to enshrine their exemption from the military in law. After Hirsch corrects the woman on the bus, telling her that he did serve in the Israel Defense Forces, the woman asks: "Why do you wear a kippa?'

He responds: "Because this is my belief and it is my right and I live here in Hod Hasharon and it is my right to ride the bus here. It is unbelievable that every time I get on a bus in Hod Hasharon, in the city where I live, I have to receive such insults."

The woman then comments on his haredi garb.

He responds: "I have the right to go as I want, with the shtreimel and with the kippa and with a white shirt - and if I want, I can also go with seven shtreimels. This is a democracy."

The woman responds: "Oh, it's democracy. What is it, the heimish sect? Really, the heimish sect, my dear." She then doubles down and calls the young man a member of the "heimish cult."

Hirsch responds: "[Left out of the English version: That I in the State of Israel would be ashamed to walk with a kippah and wigs? Why what happened? You will go as you wish.] This is not a cult. You live the way you want in the State of Israel and I will live the way I want."
Esser Agaroth (2¢):
In an interview with Daniel Amram (Hebrew), this woman says that she does not like religious (orthodox) Jews for a variety of reasons, claims that they do nothing with their lives except pray, and that the the Holocaust happened because of them. She continues by stating several times that Haredim "fart" out many children, and that it is not normal. The interview descends even further into a black hole, as she and tells Amram that he should get cancer and die (May God forbid!), after continually asking him to get off the phone. Cursing Moroccans, and in particular religious (orthodox) Moroccans came before finally ending the call.

Some say that such a woman has issues and should just be ignored.

I disagree. In my opinion, she simply lacks the ability to censor what comes out of her mouth, or perhaps she chooses not to. The truth is that this woman expresses exactly what many secular Jews believe.

And where were the others on the bus? Just sitting there watching? No one came to his defense? Granted, he handled himself just fine. However, it would have been nice to see someone, anyone come to his defense, as it is said,
"do not stand idly by" (Lev. 15:16).

As I have mentioned previously, I do not believe for a second that those on the left actually believes in democracy. They believe in pushing their anti-Torah agenda, and convincing us that their agenda is democracy. Meanwhile, among the so-called Religious Zionists right, excuses are continually made for democracy, and its contradictions of Torah.

The report in Hebrew above continues...
The chairman of the Mamlakhti Camp Faction, MK Benny Gantz, wrote that "the video of the haredi young man on the bus is hurtful. It doesn't matter where a person served or whether he served, or what we wear and whether and to whom we pray - we should remember that we are all brothers. I hope that the passenger finds a way to apologize to him and for him to find the place to forgive for her."
And that's it? And it doesn't matter to whom we pray? Here is another example of the "pluralism" from the leftists who oppose the Torah. Nothing less than working to destroy the Torah, and the Jewish People from within. A Jewish state indeed!

Yisrael Yonatan Hirsch has participated in the democratic process, contributed to it, fulfilled his communal responsibility. Perhaps we'll see him as an MK someday, a temporary poster boy for Haredi-inclusive pluralism in the Likud.

Jews in Germany accepted Lutheranism, becoming apostates for the sake of acceptance by goyim (non-Jews). There never were.

So how could we possibly expect Torah observant Jews of the Haredi perspective ever to be accepted by this rebellious segment of Israeli society, even more so by the increasing number of non-Jews flowing into the country, in response to the high birthrate of Torah observant Jews, Haredim and settlers in Judea and Samaria?

E-Cigarettes: Israel's Ministry of Health is Doing Something. What about the Ministry of Transportation?

English follows the Hebrew.
As if it wasn't addictive.
Don't listen to their stories.
The electronic cigarette endangers life!

Ministry of Health's video against electronic cigarettes

Israeli Ministry of Health: Electronic Cigarettes
  • The most common name for electronic cigarettes is "vapes", namely vaporization devices.
  • They either look like regular cigarettes or like pens and USB devices.
  • They create a mist that is inhaled into the lungs by warming a liquid container that usually contains nicotine, flavor agents and additional chemical substances.
  • Nicotine is a highly addictive substance that is also found in cigarettes, hookahs, cigars and other tobacco products.
  • The mist exhaled can also be harmful to those around the smoker, thereby causing involuntary smoke exposure.
  • Over the last few years, Israel has been witnessing an increase in the use of electronic cigarettes, especially among young people, teens and pre-teens, some as young as 5th grade students.
  • Electronic cigarettes are classified as smoking products for all intents and purposes in the eyes of the Prevention of Smoking in Public Places and Exposure to Second-Hand Smoke Law, 1983. In accordance with the Law:
  • It is strictly forbidden to sell them to minors under 18 years old
  • It is forbidden to distribute them in events
They must be sold in uniform packages
  • Nicotine percentage in them is restricted to 2%
  • It is strictly forbidden to smoke them in public areas (From the Hebrew: bus stops, swimming pools, playgrounds). Violators are subject to fine
Esser Agaroth (2¢):
What do you know? Sometimes the Israeli goverment, and in particular the Ministry of Health, gets it right, albeit too little, too late.

For those of you who were, up until now, uncertain of the legal status of electronic cigarettes, now you know. The fact that vapers think it is acceptable to force anyone to smell the scent of those things, let alone inhale whatever chemicals they contain, is beyond me. It could simply be due to our increasingly lessened sensitivity to issues of boundaries.

For those of you who could not care less about Israeli secular law, you still do not have any excuse for using these devices in public places, as it is sakkanath nefashoh, a health hazard, and thus forbidden according to halakhah (Torah Law).

The Ministry of Health does not list buses and trains themselves as examples of public places where smoking electronic cigarettes is prohibited. Unfortunately, there are still people who do not realize how obvious this is, and insist on smoking on buses and trains.

The Ministry of Health has done its part, or has at least begun to do its part, on the publicity and education front. The Ministry of Transportation now needs to step up, and do its part by modifying the no smoking signs and stickers to include electronic cigarettes. The above graphic includes some examples.

Former Minister of Transportation Merav Michaeli seems to concentrate solely on maintaining public transportation on Shabbat. That's why he didn't have time to deal with this problem of signage. It is doubtful that she knew about such a problem anyway.

I hope that the current transport minister Miri Regev tries harder than her predecessor in the position.

Israel's Corona Control Crackdown

English follows the Hebrew.

Israeli Police officer removes woman from the bus

Don't capitulate
Stop the Corona Dictatorship

(Pictured: Members of Knesset)

Corona Police
This morning during my commute to work in Jerusalem from Central Israel, two police officers boarded the bus announcing "Mask check, mask check!"

A few days before this, it seemed that everyone had become strict about wears masks all of a sudden. I do not believe it was because of media fear mongering, and manipulation of statistics. Rather, it was because of the announcement of plain clothes policemen being deployed to enforce the mask regulations.

Today was the first day that some of the previously lifted, corona based restrictions, were to be re-implemented, including a limit on the number of passengers on intercity buses. Bars, clubs, and gyms were shutdown. Restaurants and cafes were now allowed 20 customers inside, and 30 outside, with social distancing. And the fine for not wearing a mask in public had risen from 200 NIS  ($58) to 500 NIS ($145).

After one of the officers stared at my bandanna, it passed muster, as is should, and he proceeded down the corridor. I was unable to hear the officers confront one woman not wearing her mask. The single photo of the officer was all I succeeded in taking. The woman was asked to leave the bus, which she did. But, I saw that she was wearing a mask. My educated guess is that even though she had a mask, she was not wearing it. And that they asked her to leave the bus, so they could issue her a citation without delaying our bus.

For my own protection, I will not reveal the bus line nor location where this took place.

Corona Tracking
Coming into Jerusalem, I noticed this sign (second image above), I had seen several times before. But, this time I took a closer look. Picturing Members of Knesset, the sign says: "Don't capitulate. Stop the Corona Dictatorship"

The sign is from Zazim, "a movement of Arabs and Jews promoting democracy, equality and active citizenship." Mostly, it appears that in this campaign the Zazim movement is working against the Shabba"k's (secret police) corona surveillance program, for the sake of "public health." It is important to note that both those on the left and the [real] right oppose such plans.

And, guess what? The Knesset just approved the re-implementation of the Shabba"k's corona tracking,... "for our own benefit," of course.

Corona Government Action
And just now, the Knesset passed yet another law, allowing the Cabinet to enact "emergency" laws without full Knesset approval, presumably related to hindering the spread of the corona virus.

Will we eventually forget the existence of this law as well?

Corona Incompetence? (Maybe Not)
Now here is a story going around Facebook (translation of the last graphic above):
The mother of a friend of mine did a corona test at the beginning of the week. Magen David Adom (Red Star of David) staff came to her home, and did the test. And... the swabs were left on the table... They just forgot..

Two days later she received a call from the Ministry of Health, [saying] that she was positive!!!

She said to the representative: Sir, the swabs that you took are still here on my living room table...

The representative was quiet for half a minute, and then divulged to her: "It's written in the computer - the tests were lost - tell the patient that the test is positive!!!"

Do you understand??!!How many people were supposed to go into isolation, feel the pressure, lose jobs, not go to school and more...
Because of this?
I cannot verify the truth of this story (name of author erased). With the differential payouts to hospitals reported in the U. S., $39,000 for a corona death and $13,000 for other cause of death, it makes a lot of sense.

Corona Conquest
And last but not least, the classic way to control the populace: Divide and conquer. Keeping various communities at each other's throats. As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, bars, clubs, and gyms have been shutdown. However, synagogues and yeshivos (religious schools) will remain open.
(Update: YNET: MK Yifat Shasha Biton, chair of the Knesset corona committee, is requesting evidence necessitating the shutdown of gyms and bars.)

The media has already begun blaming the Haredi (ultra-orthodox) members of Knesset for holding the government hostage. But, I believe the truth is that the powers that be, and that does not necessarily mean the government, is simply building on the hatred of this community and blame subtly put on it for the spread of the virus. Have any neighborhoods in Tel-Aviv been put on lock down? No. Of course not, in spite of the increasing numbers of cases there. And what about the non-compliant, illegal aliens in South Tel Aviv? Nothing.

The closure of places designed for reduction of stress, blowing off steam, and supporting our health is just an added control benefit for them. It was just announced that public bus service will not stop after 10:00 PM.

I hate to ask when access to parks, trails, and beaches will be limited again. We already saw how we Israelis, who love being outdoors, dealt with being stuck inside during the cooler months of March and April. How long we will be able to suffer being stuck inside during the summer months?

Not for very long.

Two Demonstrations in Jerusalem Tonight!

English follows the Hebrew.

Blocking the junction of streets by the Chords Bridge (Light Rail) near the Central Bus and Train Stations around 7:00 pm

Trash bin on fire in the street next to Allo Teiman

On Monday evening, two demonstrations were held in Jerusalem, one of HaPeleg HaYerushalmi in the area of Sarei Yisrael Street due to the arrest of a yeshiva student who refused to make his appearance at the IDF enlistment office and the other at the entrance to the city, because of the 17-year-old Ethiopian boy who was killed by a police officer in Qiryat Hayim.

I was on my way to meet with a friend on Sarei Yisrael Street. But, because of the demonstration there, we decided to meet at the entrance to the city. On the way there I ran into the other demonstration.

Demonstrator and follows coming up Ben-Gurion Street from the corner of Givat Shaul Street

Private cars managed to leave the city via the Begin Highway and Saharoff Garden. Needless to say, public transportation was a complete mess! At 8:45 pm we did see that the light rail was running again.

It is important to see that the population of this demonstration is very mixed. True, some yeshiva students (Litvak, Hassidic, Sephardi, Yemenites, etc.) were hanging around the demonstration because they were bored. But they had the opportunity to meet those demonstrating and learn about the difficulties of various Jews and that they are not the only targets of the State vis-a-vis the police.

Speaking of Clients...

This post should probably be in Hebrew, too. But, the offensive person in question was an English speaker. So, for now, I'll stick with English.

Even though the person in question was in Haredi livush, PLEASE do not take this as an opportunity to Haredi-bash. Rather, this is an opportunity to be critical of some of those English speakers who identify as "therapists," both real and fake.

While on the bus to Tel Aviv, a man starts talking way too loudly on the phone. No, he wasn't [native] "Israeli," as you people like to refer to "them" vs. "us." He was speaking way too loudly in his native English.

Never heard anyone in Israel speak too loudly on the phone in English? Then you're just not paying attention,...ever.

Anyway, what is this guy talking about? The clients he saw today!

"I saw two couples today. One couple was from XXXXXX (community)...."

Who is he talking to? His consultant? His adviser? His own therapist?

Where on earth did he learn that this is appropriate to talk about clients in a public place? What kind of course in laws and ethics for therapists did he take? Did he even take any such class?

Quite frankly, this is tantamount to "acting-out of therapy."

Why does he even have to speak about his clients in a public place? I don't even think he was trying to show off.

Does he really think that no one will understand English? That since it's only a little demographic data, that makes it ok?

This is not even about risking the clients' confidentiality. Even one iota of data disrespects his clients. They are people, not subjects, and certainly not statistics.

Arabs on Buses and Other Problems

English follows the Hebrew.

Afikim Bus Company logo

Arabs on Ariel Buses, Another Problem

This morning, I happened to read Arabs on Ariel Buses, Another Problem by Shilo Muse Batya Medad, before I left on my way to the Shomron (Samaria) to spend Shabbat. I shared this comment on her blog post:

Memorial for Rabbi Itamar Ben-Gal hy"d
This Friday I left early before Arab workers are supposed to get off from work. Or at least that's what I thought. I managed to get the last seat. Even though I had to convince the Arab sitting next to me to give me the entire seat, and not just the edge.

There was already one religious, young woman standing, who did not want to sit next to an Arab or next to any man at all. The driver left the station where I got on with six or seven passengers standing up. This bus is permitted to travel with a maximum of ten standing passengers.

Rabbi Itamar Ben-Gal hy"d
I was surprised that the driver did not stop at the Morasha Interchange (16) or the Yarkon Wharf (17). Perhaps this was because he thought there were already ten passengers standing. The driver was Jewish. You'll have to decide for yourselves if that made any difference in preventing the bus from being overcrowded.

Finally, we reached the Ariel junction, where I got off and walked to the trempiada (hitchhiking spot) to continue my journey. At the trempiada, I saw a memorial to Rabbi Itamar Ben-Gal hy "d, who was murdered at this very spot nine months ago, yet another reminder of our problems with Arabs.

Sem Girls Singing on the Bus

English follows the Hebrew.

Would someone please 'splain to me why American "sem girls" are singing holy texts with ta'amei hamiqra (trope, Torah musical notation) on the bus?

According to one of these young women, they had an "exam" the next day.  And they had to practice? Or they had to study? That was not so clear to me.

An exam? In ta'amei hamiqra?

Or perhaps, they were taught to use ta'amei hamiqra as a technique to memorize passages more efficiently? This is the only possibility which would make sense to me. It is, or course, permissible for women to read publicly Megillath Esther FOR OTHER WOMEN. However, they were definitely not practicing the ta'amei hamiqra for Megillath Esther.

Do women learn ta'amei hamiqra in order to teach Humash (Torah) to boys? That would, indeed, be very disappointing, and not just the thinly disguised feminism, but also the lack of men willing to teach first and second grade boys. This is yet another reason why Religious Zionists are sending their boys to learn in Haredi Talmud Torah.

But, I digress...

I asked the young woman closer to me if she thought that maybe people on the bus wanted to hear them singing. And, actually, I was asking her because they were too loud, and not because of qol isha (the prohibition related to women's singing). After all it was public bus, and we live in a "pluralistic democracy." (eyes rolling)

She responded that if I wanted her to stop, then I should just ask her. I told her that I wasn't going to do that. It was a public bus, and she could do what she wants. But, that maybe she may want to consider those other passengers around them, and then decide what to do.

I don't know. Was that passive-aggressive?  (wink)

Another Sign of a Cashless Society

We're moving to a more secure and faster ride!
The driving is on me. Adding credit to a Rav Kav is on us.
In Jerusalem, we're advancing to a self-service transit card.

You can see this poster now on buses in Jerusalem, but tip credit also goes to Jerusalem Bus Maps (Oren's Transit Page), a site to follow to keep up to date on Jerusalem public transportation.

Jerusalem Bus Maps reports:
HEADS UP! As of TODAY, Friday, June 8, bus drivers will no longer accept cash payments for single rides without a Rav Kav (except for senior citizens, who will still be able to buy a single ride with cash). The following will continue to be available for purchase from the driver on board the bus for the time being:
1. Anonymous Rav Kav card
2. Single ride (including ma'avar/transfer) to be loaded on a Rav Kav
3. Chofshi Yomi (daily pass) loaded on a Rav Kav
Esser Agaroth (2¢):
I have already written about government tracking and about the complications of losing a Rav Kav.

I don't have much to add, except that this is yet another sign of Israel's, and the rest of the world's, move toward a cashless society. It is about so much more than tracking movements, and monitoring purchases, which they can already do in a variety of ways: calling history, security cameras, and GPS for tracking; coupons, contests, credit cards, clubs, and points for monitoring food and chemical intake and usage.

It's all about increasing control over the masses, not to mention control over precious metals.

Christian Missionary Activity is Legal in Israel

The Jewish Press: Bus Driver Waited Patiently for Passenger Who Was Removing Missionary Posters

David Israel - 16 Heshvan 5778 – November 5, 2017

The dissemination of missionary materials is illegal in Israel, but the country still experiences waves of this contraband content, most recently at the Savidor Central Train Station in Tel Aviv, according to a resident of Tel Aviv who reported it to Hakol Hayehudi.

The Jewish woman approached a bus station adjacent to the train terminal when she noticed missionary posters and pamphlets, and immediately began removing them and collecting the booklets.

But then her bus entered the stop’s bay and she had to stop and board the bus – when the driver, who had noticed her actions, turned to her and asked: “Is this missionary material?”

When she answered in the affirmative, the driver asked her to exit and continue the work of removing the material, and waited for her to finish.

“It was heartwarming to see the Jewish sentiment waking up against the missionaries,” the woman told Hakol Hayehudi.

Esser Agaroth (2¢):
While David Israel properly points out that Christian missionary activity is a problem in Israel, he incorrectly states that...
"The dissemination of missionary materials is illegal in Israel, but the country still experiences waves of this contraband content..."
Missionary activity in NOT illegal, according to the laws of the State of Israel, with a couple of exceptions, and is stated in the original Hakol HaYehudi article in Hebrew which Israel cites:
The State of Israel continues to be fertile ground for the missionary activity of various Christian sects, due to breaches in the law that do not prohibit missionary activity, except as solicitation of minors or solicitation for money or favors. (Fixed Google Translation)
HaKol HaYehudi's use of the word "breaches" is in criticism of the law, not in reference to the Christians' violations of the law. As far as can be told, these Christians were not violating State Law, only Torah Law. And we all should know by now how exactly the State regards Torah Law.

Even the left-wing, formerly a reliable ally in the fight against Christian missionaries, has adopted the attitude of "democratic freedom of religious expression." This attitude appears to have developed from the belief that if the State of Israel legislates against one group's beliefs, the left's secular and Torah-distorting elements could be the State's next targets, not to mention the beliefs of the foreign workers and fake refugees that Left has been filling the Land with.

I believe that the seeds of this attitude were planted by Christian activists themselves. I am sure that al the money they throw around in Israel didn't hurt their influence either.

But, I digress...

No one is perfect. We all make mistakes. However, suggesting that the State of Israel deserves credit for maintaining a sound and very important law, which in reality, it does not, misleads your readers into giving credit when it is not deserved.

And so, I ask The Jewish Press to issue a correction, or provide a reference to Israeli State Law legal, demonstrating that I have erred.

(Did the Knesset actually do something right by repairing this travesty, while I wasn't paying attention? I sincerely doubt it.)

Israel Back to the Beach 5777!

Beach season has been well-underway in Israel, and that includes the Hof HaNifrad (Separate Beach) in Tel-Aviv. Tel-Aviv's religious beach is located just north of the Hilton Hotel, down the hill from Gan HaAtzma'ut Independence Park.

Men's days are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Women's days are Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Other separate beaches in Israel divide the days up like in Tel-Aviv. Others stagger the mornings and afternoons instead.

One of the criticisms of the beach's designation as a religious/separate beach is the lack of a mehitzah (divider) on its south side. It was dilapidated and in disrepair, and so why finally taken down, but has yet to be replaced. From where I was standing, nothing "exciting" can be seen anyway. Nevertheless, it should be rebuilt.

Ironically the next beach south which can be seen right underneath the Hilton Hotel has been gradually developed into the unofficial gay beach. You can see the rainbow roofed shaded areas which were just never taken down after an annual celebration.

This beach sports a volleyball net, which was in use most of the time I was there on the day  of these photos.

So was the gym equipment.

But, the most exciting scene of the day was the "purple flag," indicating the presence of meduzot (jellyfish). There were quite a few of them too. I, myself, was stung, or shot at, or whatever jellyfish do.

The are very hard to see, like glass in water. Even though when they get beached, their color is a milky white.

The lifeguards will occasionally catch them to show the beach goers, especially the kids, in order to educate them about this beach hazard.

One thing I noticed which was new this year was at the snack bar. It seems that it still carries the usually ice cream novelties and junk food. But, it has also added four different beers on tap!

Be careful, though, as alcohol can be dehydrating.

Enjoy the beach!

Eyewitnesses reported that an Arab with a knife was seen getting on Jerusalem local bus line Line 16 at the Najara and Ben-Uziel station in the Giva’th Shaul neighborhood. Passengers ran away to escape, and so did the Arab. A search for the Arab is now on. As of 7pm, there were no reports of any wounded.

Police, ambulances and Hotzoloh personnel are in the area, here in front of the Yesh Hessed supermarket, up Najara Street from where the Arab with the knife was seen.

Update:
I heard that according to "Radio Qol Hai," this event was called a false alarm.

Freshman MK Oren Hazan (Likud) seems to think so...
Arutz 7: Bill: Compulsory Arabic Classes from First Grade
MK Oren Hazan (Likud) thinks all Israeli kids should know Arabic – to lessen fear. Support from Left and Right.

Gil Ronen, May 27, 2015

MK Oren Hazan
Freshman MK Oren Hazan (Likud) has sponsored a bill that would make it mandatory for all Israeli schoolchildren to study spoken Arabic, from first to 12th grade.

The trigger for Hazan's decision is apparently the Defense Ministry's announcement that it has frozen plans to offer separate buses for Jews and Arabs in Samaria.

"In our daily reality, with Jews riding the buses in Judea and Samaria and hearing the Palestinians – they are usually afraid,” Hazan said. “With global terrorism and radical Islam on the rise, the lack of knowledge and understanding leads to fear.”

Army Radio reported that the bill has been received with enthusiasm by both Left and Right. MK Meretz's Issawi Frej signed the bill in support, and said: “This bill is a process that I have been accompanying for a year. I can only hope. Everything has a chance, it depends on who's behind it. Since Oren Hazan is a Coalition man and knows how to work and dig – there's a chance that it'll pass.”

Other MKs who signed the bill include Yinon Magal (Jewish Home), Anat Berko (Likud) and Merav Ben Ari (Kulanu).

(Tip: Life In Israel)
Esser Agaroth (2¢):
I'm not against the idea of students learning Arabic in school, nor even for them to learn it for several years, or for it to be a requirement. After all, the more we know Arabic the more the people will be able to hear for themselves just exactly what the Arabs think and feel, with their own ears.

Although, I do believe that pedagogically, the first grade is too young to begin studying Arabic, when students are still making regular mistakes in Hebrew, and in an increasing number of schools, expected to begin studying English as well.

I also do not buy the "to lessen fear" argument. Although most Jews make their way around Yehudah and Shomron (Judea and Samaria) on buses for convenience sake, many do ride the buses or safety reasons. They ride bulletproof buses to protect themselves from the Arabs. So, actually inviting the Arabs to join us on the bus, completely defeats the purpose of the bulletproofing, don't you think?

Furthermore, the kids getting around by tremping (hitchhiking), the Jews who are not afraid of Arabs, have been demonized for not being afraid of Arabs, and for daring to defend themselves from their "neighbors."

Do you really think that the government wants "to lessen [our] fear?"

And speaking of our "neighbors," Jews learning Arabic will also make it easier for Arabs and Jews to get together socially. Even more so, the Arabs connecting with these Arabic-learning Jews would be those non-Hebrew-speaking Arabs, who despise everything about Israel, such as Hebrew being its official language.

Social interaction leads to dating, which leads to a romantic connection. How many more cases of abusive Arab husbands battering their Jewish wives will result from MK Hazan's proposal? And what about the increase in cases of young, Jewish men being seduced into meeting their prospective Arab girlfriends in Ramallah, only to meet with a torturous death?

As one who grew up in the U. S., very close to the Mexican border, and in the bilingual city in denial, San Diego, I know first-hand just how practical it is to learn the language of a neighboring country.

But where do we fit it in? Who's gonna pay for it? How will students cope with learning two foreign languages simultaneously?

And just who do you think will be hired to teach our children? Arabs?

Jerusalem parents of special needs kids have already been expressing concerns over their children being driven to and from school by Arabs from East Jerusalem neighborhoods. "Expressing concerns" is an understatement.

What about the Arab employees caught trying to poison customers at restaurants in Jerusalem and Ramat Gan?

What about the Arab employee who blew up the cafeteria at Hebrew University in 2002?

What about the Arab employee who shot up the Merkaz HaRav Kook Yeshiva High School in 2008?

Will you trust these new, Arab teachers of Arabic? Will they go through background checks? Will that matter? Do you really want to take that chance?

I do not know about you, but this proposal does not lessen my fear of Arabs. It only makes it worse.
