Making A Jewish Holiday Something That It Is Not

English follows the Hebrew.

Shavu'oth, Ramat Ilan, Givat Shmu'el

YNET: Shavuot: Same Customs, New Approach (translation)
Water fights, flower garlands, Shavuot night repairs and dairy meals - the holiday's familiar customs have remained with us for centuries. But amid climate change, environmental awareness and new technologies, Israelis are finding new ways to celebrate Shavuot without giving up the spirit of tradition
Nitzan Pincu | May 13, 2026
Esser Agaroth (2¢):
This piece by Nitzan Pincu, with the participation of the Gad and Remilk Dairies, seems primarily to be a promotion of particular products. Surprisingly, I also happen to agree with a few of the points she makes about out Nevertheless, this is a good opportunity to point out a few notable words and phrases, we should all be aware of, or rather, be wary of.
Customs and holidays tend to evolve and adapt as our society changes. Shavuot, one of the most beloved and joyous holidays on the Jewish calendar, remains the same familiar holiday - but the way Israelis choose to celebrate it continues to change over time. These changes do not happen all at once, but slowly seep into the customs most identified with the holiday, through small choices and natural adjustments to today's life.
The holiday of Shavu'oth (Feast of Weeks) commemorates the giving of the Torah. "Weeks," for we just completed the mitzvah of Sefirath HaOmer, the counting of 49 days, for a total of seven weeks, from the second day of Passover, the day of the harvesting of the omer of barley. The commandment to bring the First Fruits to the Temple, is also performed on Shavu'oth.

Let's see what Nitzan Pincu means by "evolve and adapt," as we as some of her other choices of words and phrases.

Pincu mentions the custom of Tiqqun Leil Shavu'oth, staying up the night of Shavu'oth to learn Torah. This custom is a tiqqun (reparation; to make up) for the People of Israel having fallen asleep before the giving of the Torah (Midrash Shir HaShirim Rabbah 1:12).
...we correct the actions of our mothers and fathers by reading the Torah.

In recent years, in parallel with traditional study, parallel frameworks have also developed: content events, lectures and meetings that allow a wide audience to take part in the idea of a "night of learning" - each through their own areas of interest. These events are held annually throughout the country in cultural centers, community centers and local authorities.
Setting aside the obvious red flag of stating "mothers and fathers," instead of just forefathers -- women are exempt from time-related, positive mitzvoth (commandments), not to mention most forms of Torah study -- it seems here that Pincu puts "lectures and meetings" on the same level with Torah learning.

Still, such lectures "through their own areas of interest," could be a way for secular Jews to connect with their Torah heritage. I have been to personal stories of soldiers, olim (immigrants), which have been very inspirational. Although somehow, I do not think that connecting with a traditional approach to Torah is what was intended here.

Next on the list is the North African custom of dumping water on someone's head, and giving blessing him with the words, "There is no water, but Torah." She also mentions other customs with water, sprinkling, showering, and even water fights.

I am certainly all for conserving water. Perhaps these customs should be modified, or even discouraged, for the sake of the health of our homeland. But the alternative?
...in order to save water due to climate change and drought, many people replace the wars with trips to water sources around the country - streams, springs and beaches.
Tell me something. How are they supposed to get to these natural water sources? Camping out for the holiday? Or this year, the holiday and Shabboth? There are, after all, plenty of groups of religious camping enthusiasts out there. The Kineret (Sea of Galilee) and Eilat on the Red Sea are popular Shabboth camping venues, not to mention some forests and other beaches, with designated camping areas.

However, I suspect that she may actually mean getting into one's car on the holiday itself and driving to these natural water sources, something which Jews are prohibited from doing, according to the very Torah we are commemorating having received.
...children arrive for the holiday with a green and colorful crown on their heads, and quite a few adults do the same. The custom of picking flowers for the holiday underwent a significant change as early as 1956, with the Plant Protection Law that restricted the picking of protected species.

The solution is simple: paper flowers or dried flowers that can be prepared in advance and reused each year. No less beautiful and without the need to search for what is allowed and what is not.
Pincu makes good point here, with or without a law in place. While living in the town of Ofra, residents were asked not to pick wildflowers within the town, simply so that everyone can enjoy them, and not just the few that came to pick them all. And although many such flowers are annuals, and grow from bulbs or corms, over-picking can still prevent seed production and propagation.

But, paper flowers? Maybe. They are biodegradable, and can be educational, art projects. But shouldn't we also reduce our paper usage? The jury is out on this suggestion.

And finally, we have the anticipated, product promotion.

When it comes to profit, we jump from [possibly] driving on yom tov (holidays such as Passover, Rosh HaShannah, and Yom Kippur) to maintaining a kosher diet? Jews do not eat meat with dairy. There are various customs as to how long after a meat meal, one needs to wait before eating dairy. Although it is true that many Israelis due keep kosher, even though they do not keep Shabboth (Sabbatical laws).
The new milk is suitable for those who want to diversify and try new flavors. It allows you to enjoy dairy flavors even after a meat meal and makes it easier for those who are lactose sensitive, but it is not suitable for those allergic to milk because it contains milk protein.
How is this possible? Has the protein been extracted from that milk, and so highly processed that it is considered davar acher (something else)? Who can say?

The claim of moving forward (progressivism?) can sometimes actually be moving us backwards, to remain stuck in the exile of assimilation among the nations.

Every time someone suggests that Jews "evolve and adapt," even their customs, the motivation behind it must come into question. Is the interest here in changing customs, or is it really about changing the Torah.

Rabbi Hershel Shachter, Rosh Yeshivah of RIETS at Yeshiva University, teaches that both Torah and the Land of Israel are referred to, not as yerushah (inheritance), but as morashah (heritage). A yerushah can be done with as one pleases. But a morashah must be maintained, and handed to the next generation in tact, and not chopped up, sold, nor given away.

Pincu mentions Israelis, but not Jews living in Israel. When Shimon Peres and his Labor Party was defeated in the elections by up and comer Binyamin Netanyahu and his Likud Party, Peres as famously stated that the Israelis had lost the election. When asked if Israelis lost, then who won, his response was, "The Jews."

The point is that she would not be the first one to differentiate between these two. It is likely that this was not her intention at all. But, it does warrant a mention.

Another word to be wary of, when you see it is pluralism. Pluralism suggests inclusion. But the truth is that it is code for validating that which is anti-Torah under the guise of inclusiveness..

When the word creativity pops up, it is not referring to the creation of new recipes to uplift the holiday. It is code for allowing, even encouraging Jews, to believe that their new fangled anti-Torah concepts are Torah, when they could not be anything further from Torah.

The band playing on Shavu'oth in the photo (above) is in the city of Givat Shmu'el, a city in which everything is closed on Shabboth and on holidays. How does this city justify its allowance of this event? in violation of the holiday?.

Was it throwing the secular Jews a bone? Did a majority of a secular city council authorize it? Or are political seats of power really that valuable?

Hobby Lobby: American Jews are missing the point,...Again.

Times Of Israel: J'accuse, Hobby Lobby - No dreidels for sale here, ‘you people’
Chain of Evangelical-owned craft stores refuses to sell Hannukah items, is slapped with hostile online reaction

Gavriel Fiske, October 2, 2013

A chain of craft stores in the US has been accused of anti-Semitism for refusing to sell Hannukah-themed items, leading to an Internet backlash and calls for a boycott.

Hobby Lobby
(unidentified branch)
Last week, blogger Ken Berwitz posted that neighbors were reporting that a New Jersey branch of Hobby Lobby didn’t have any Hannukah or Jewish-themed merchandise for sale. He said workers asked about the omission replied, “We don’t cater to you people,” meaning Jews, and that including Jewish items would be against the values of the chain’s Christian owner.

Berwitz’s post generated a torrent of comments around the web, many of which called for a boycott of the chain, and was picked up by several news sites, including the Daily Kos, who reported on Monday that Hobby Lobby was monitoring its Facebook page to remove any posts about the issue.

A local news site reported Monday that a Hobby Lobby representative wrote to the mayor of Marlboro, New Jersey, where the store in question is located, and said that ”alleged comments made by employees are currently being investigated and will be addressed accordingly. These comments are in no way indicative of Hobby Lobby culture, the owners and the operators.”

Hobby Lobby, a Oklahoma-based chain of over 500 stores that, according to its website, operates “in a manner consistent with biblical principles,” is privately owned by Evangelical Christian businessman David Green. (Hanukkah is against "Biblical Principles?" Perhaps, because it is absent of their false deity/messiah.) (cont.)

Esser Agaroth (2¢):
Why are American Jews still fighting about these silly, little things? Don't they get it?

No matter how hard you try to be fully accepted as a "full" American in American society, you will never be. The U. S. A. is not your homeland. Israel is.

One of our (YOUR) greatest challenges is remembering that residing in galuth (exile, ie. not in Israel) is a punishment. As fantastic as we (YOU) are at rising to the challenge of succeeding, and even gaining respect in a Land which is not ours (YOURS), the strategies employed in doing so are based on assimilation, something we (YOU) have been attempting in every generation since [at least] 1400's Spain, and it has never worked. So, it is high time to try something new, and fail safe: Jews discovering what living within a a Jewish (not American) framework is, and then employing that as a strategy.*

Working through the mentality we have developed, due to the 2,000 years our (YOUR) people have spent in galuth is our (YOUR) greatest spiritual challenge, other than perhaps the acceptance that spirituality even has a place in our (YOUR) lives.

The ADL's and the AIPAC's only appear to be your "protectors." But, the reality is that they are keeping us (YOU) down,...down in our (YOUR) exile, preventing you from having any truly meaningful connection to our (YOUR) true homeland and heritage, the Eretz Yisra'el (Land of Israel) and the Torah.

Remember. The Almighty knows all.

He knows all about those nebachy (poor, poor) Jews who think that Hanukkah is a Jewish Christmas, and the most important day in the Jewish calendar. He's got to reach "you people" somehow.

And so should we.

Do not be embarrassed to ask questions about your heritage. If you feel like you're being put down for doing so, then ask your questions to someone else. You can also pose your questions anonymously to the countless Torah-based websites out there.

Try to remember the story of how the holiday of Hanukkah came about.

A group of Jews, led by Matityahu the Kohain Gadol (High Priest) at the time, living in the Land of Israel, were fed up with the assimilation of their (YOUR) brothers and sisters' assimilation into a foreign culture, and its effects on the Jewish People and Jewish Homeland as a whole.

They weren't going to take it anymore. They fought back. Not only did they defending their "freedom of religion," which so many American Jews are taught to fight for, even if that includes fighting for the right not to have any religion or particular beliefs at all. The main difference was that these Jews, the "Maccabees," were fighting for something truly Jewish, and within the only truly Jewish Homeland, not the U. S. of A., but Eretz Yisra'el.

This was a spiritual fight. The fight to live as Jews authentically, including control over Har HaBayith (Temple Mount), and the "right" to practice Judaism there, was intertwined with the fight for authentically Jewish control over the Land of Israel.

It was a fight against assimilation within Eretz Yisra'el.

Incidentally, the word Macabee is actually an acronym, מכב"י. It comes from a verse from the Song Of The Sea, sung in celebration after The Almighty divided the Red Sea, and saved us (YOU) from the pursuit of the Egyptian pursuit, after leaving Egyptian exile (ie. the first Passover).

Who is like You, O LORD, among the mighty? who is like You, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders? (Exodus 15:11)
Maccabee is also Greek for "hammer," a strong message to those Jews who knew Greek, but not Hebrew.

And so, now that you know the story behind the story of Hanukkah, ask yourself what is more important, whether a Christian owned company carries Hannukah merchandise or not, or whether the Jewish People will not only survive, but will remember its heritage, and actually have a true Homeland in which to reside.

In other words, do you really want to be a part of the downfall of the Jews residing in the U. S.? YOU cry antisemitism, but the same ol' "write a letter, make it better" strategy does not go to the heart of the matter, if it ever did.

What good is it to find Hannukah merchandise, if you never knew what Hannukah was really about? Or that Pesah (Passover) is on a different level, or that there is a holiday called Shavu'oth, which never heard of before, because most years, Hebrew school ended before it arrived.

What good is it all, if you are being told that you're just a member of some religion, which you do not even believe in, and not a member of a people which has a Land of its own, even older than Sudan or France?

What good is it all, finding a Hanukkiyah (Hanukkah menorah), if you marry a non-Jew, and have been no solid reason why shouldn't?

What good is it all, if you're being lied to.

********

*A Jew by the name of Rabbi Me'ir Kahane hy"d talked about assimilation being one of the greatest threats to His solution was for Jews to learn about what it meant to exist and to live like a Jew, instead of like non-Jews. Instead of searching for acceptance and validation from the outside (co-dependence), he suggested that we (YOU) search for acceptance and validation from within.

I only mention him here, because his name seems to "scare" Jews away, due to the maligning of it by those very Jews, who have fallen victim to assimilation.

President Peres's Pretty Pope and Princess Pictures!

These photos, screenshots from the Israeli President's Official YouTube Channel (source video below) show what is important to Shimon Peres: Goyim, in particular, his Illuminati pals.

We are allowed to demonstrate the bringing of the Bikkurim (the first fruits) to the secular Israeli President, his buddy, a high priest of avodah zarah and a chieftain of Edom, and demonstrate it to the Israeli Prime Minister. But, we are forbidden by the above mentioned individuals from performing the misswah properly, by bringing them to Har HaBayith (the Temple Mount) on Shavu'oth, and presenting them to a proper priest, a Kohain.

President Peres explains "something" to the former Pope Benedict XVI (Josef Ratzinger).
Ratzinger = Rat Singer

And, speaking of pedophilia Pope-phillia, here is President Peres with the new high priest of avodah zarah and a chieftain of Edom.
President Peres receives a gift from Pope Francis
(avodah zarah blacked out)
Vatican, April, 2013
President Peres was one of the first celebrities Heads of State to be received by the newly elected Pope Francis. President Peres presented what appeared to be a Tana"kh (a real Bible) in Hebrew,...as if all of the pieces of Israel thrown to the Vatican wasn't enough.

In return, Peres received some old coins, as if giving back the Temple vessels was too much to ask? Does the Israel President get to keep those coins, or do they go into a depository, which theoretically belongs to Israeli citizens? Hmm...

Sure, Queen Elizabeth II is no longer a "princess," but "queen" doen't start with the letter "p," does it?

Her Majesty does not appear to be terribly concerned that she is no longer welcome at the home of at least one resident (probably more) of K'far Tapu'ah, in the Shomron (Samaria).

What's this award for? Loyalty to the New World Order cause?
President Peres receives, yet, another award, for something,...I suppose being the "symbol" of Israel.

And, what you have all been waiting for, President Peres's wrap, techno, house, dance mix video!

Seriously, though. Is this President Peres dude for real?

I guess he risen to such a high level (of gaivah), that either doesn't care, is careless, or just loves to throw it into all of our faces.

He does whatever he wants, and expects the rest of us to do the same,...what HE wants.

A Misplaced Shavu'os Offering

Question: What's wrong with this video?

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu receives Bikkurim (First Fruits) from the children of Emeq HaMa'ayanoth at his office in Jerusalem.
(Tip Credit: Rafi at Life In Israel)
Answer: Almost everything. I found only two redeeming elements of this video:
1) These children are actually learning something about agriculture. At least they know that fruits and vegetables originate from the ground, and that Jews can actually be involved in the process.

2) It seems that a train route will be added (for real), connecting the prime minister's guests' inland region to the coast, thanks to the Prime Minister. Emeq HaMa'ayanoth includes the city of Beth Sha'an, which sits ver close to the Jordanian border.
This cute appearing photo op. of a ceremony was actually quite disturbing to me.

Before I explain why, let's take a look at what the bringing of the Bikkurim is REALLY supposed to be like.

Deuteronomy 26
1 And it will be, when you come into the land which the Lord your God gives to you for an inheritance, and possess it, and dwell therein; 2 that you will take of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you will bring in from your land that the Lord you God gives to you; and thou shalt put it in a basket and shalt go to the place which the LORD thy God shall choose to cause His name to dwell there.  3 And thou shalt come to the priest that shall be in those days, and say unto him: 'I profess this day unto the LORD thy God, that I am come unto the land which the LORD swore unto our fathers to give us.' 4 And the priest shall take the basket out of thy hand, and set it down before the altar of the LORD thy God. 5. And thou shalt speak and say before the LORD thy God: 'A wandering Aramean was my father, and he went down into Egypt, and sojourned there, few in number; and he became there a nation, great, mighty, and populous. 6 And the Egyptians dealt ill with us, and afflicted us, and laid upon us hard bondage. 7 And we cried unto the LORD, the God of our fathers, and the LORD heard our voice, and saw our affliction, and our toil, and our oppression. 8 And the LORD brought us forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand, and with an outstretched arm, and with great terribleness, and with signs, and with wonders. 9. And He hath brought us into this place, and hath given us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 And now, behold, I have brought the first of the fruit of the land, which Thou, O LORD, hast given me.' And thou shalt set it down before the LORD thy God, and worship before the LORD thy God. 11 And thou shalt rejoice in all the good which the LORD thy God hath given unto thee, and unto thy house, thou, and the Levi, and the stranger that is in the midst of thee.

Esser Agaroth (2¢):
The Prime Minister of Israel is not a priest, his office is not the Temple, his desk is not the altar, and my guess is that the formula which is supposed to be said upon bringing the Bikkurim (blue italics), is virtually meaningless to the Prime Minister and his guests.

I'm only surprised that Israeli President Shimon Peres did not stand in this role of receiver.

Have these kids being brainwashed into thinking that this is a legitimate form of bringing the Bikkurim, the bringing of Bikkurim to the Prime Minister of the State?? They must realize that this is just a substitute, and a poor one at that. Or do they?

Are children taught anything about the Temple and the faith in the eventual re-institution of the qorbanoth (sacrifices) and other rituals there? Highly doubtful.

Q: What is the Prime Minister doing to rebuild the Temple?
A: Nothing.

Q: What is the Prime Minister doing to allow any other Jews to rebuild the Temple?
A: Nothing.

Q: What is the Prime Minister doing to allow Jews to pray on the Temple Mount?
A: Nothing.

If the Labor Zionists had their way, they would brainwash us all into believing that we are simply relegated to viewing the State as a temporay substitute for the real thing, and then do everything they can to convince Jews, one by one, that this will a permanent situation.

The erasing of what they believe to be Israel's borders will be next. The watering down of the Jewish quality of the State will continue on course, and will include the continued influx of non-Jews, anyway they can bring them here: foreign workers, African "refugees," Americans with sham "conversions," and generic goyim from Europe.

Of course, they will not be allowed in the secular, Ashkenazi elitist neighborhoods and towns, such as Ramat Aviv, Hod HaSharon, and K'far Shemaryahu, nor in the religious mamlakhti (undying state loyalist) towns and neighborhoods, a reward for "good behavior."

Then their feigned despair over the loss of the Jewish State, which was only marginally Jewish to begin with.

How did I figure this out, all from one "cute" little ceremony of kids excited to meet their holy prime minister?

I opened my eyes. That's how.

Now, what are YOU going to do, to make certain that we are able to bring the Bikkurim properly next Shavu'oth?

South Park Shavu'os!

This post is dedicated to Eric and Jennifer, two of the nicest, new people I've met in real life in a long time! As they are from Denver, I just HAD to add a "South Park" connection, which pretty easy to do. Happy Shavu'oth!

*********

There is a tradition for us to eat dairy on Shavu'oth, the day on which we received the Torah at Mt. Sinai.

The tradition has been said to stem from not yet having learned the halakhoth (laws) of slaughtering kosher animals, even though we were obligated to them.

Others suggest a connection to the two loaves of bread offered on Shavu'oth. To distinguish between the two, many Jews wash, have a dairy meal, conclude the meal with birkath hamazon (blessings after the meal), wash again, and have meat meal.

Still others, like the Yekkeshe (German) Jews, having only dairy meals on Shavu'oth.

Some vegans even have something "dairy-like," such as something made with hazelnut or cashew "creams," to pay homage to this custom.

The light and fluffy nature of the dairy dishes served on Shavu'oth are often said to be the antitheses of the unleavened matzah eaten on Pesah (Passover), Shavu'oth being the culmination of the redemption process began on Pesah. As we count the Omer through this period, we rise in levels of purity and spirituality, in preparation to receive the Torah. Whereas the matzah, the lehem oni (bread of affliction) represents humility, the light and fluffy, leaven (ie. raised) items eaten on Shavu'oth represent gaivah (pride).

But, isn't pride a negative attribute? Is it not better to be humble, and strive to be so?

Yes. But, some say that there is one exception, the possession of the Torah. Even coveting another's Torah knowledge is said to encourage one to learn Torah, and not hinder it.

But, now for the most important question: What dairy dishes to make for Shavu'oth?

But, of course, being from San Diego, I have usually had something with a Mexican flavor on Shavu'oth. No one said that the dairy dishes had to be sweet, did they? Although I am sure there are those that will tell you that the Torah is sweet, which it is. Nonetheless, dairy Mexican is my general Shavu'oth custom: Dairy, or more specifically "cheesy," and light and fluffy, or perhaps one could say "poofy..." Watch and see!

No, I have yet to try making homemade cheesy poofs, but it is definitely an option for the future.

The last time I tried making one of making one of my favorites, cheese enchiladas, in 1994, and I must say that they were a complete disaster.

And so, I will probably stick with my quick and easy quesadilla recipe. Quesadillas should be made with dough filled with cheese, and fried.

The only tortillas I have found in Israel are white flour tortillas, imported from Turkey of all places. One of these days, I would like to try and make tortillas from spelt flour. But until then, if that's what I have to work with, then that's what I have to work with.

Begin frying one tortilla at a time. As soon as it gets soft enough to fold, add your choice of filling. grated Monterey Jack cheese is preferred, but you may have to use whatever yellow cheese you can get a hold of. Freshly grated hot pepper, freshly-grated garlic, sautéed mushrooms, chopped black olive rings, and chopped green onion are only some of the optional ingredients which can be added.

Fold the tortilla over, and continue frying on both sides, until it becomes golden.

Serve with salsa and/or guacamole.

Still want something sweet, but keeping in line with a Mexican theme?

How about buneulo chips and vanilla ice cream?

Bunuelo Chips and Ice Cream

They are very easy to make. Simply cut tortillas into the shapes you desire, fry in oil on both sides until crisp. Then immediately coat with a mixture of sugar and cinnamon. Some take the chips and shake them in a paper bag with sugar and cinnamon. Serve with vanilla ice cream. The above photo has honey. I prefer chocolate syrup with this dessert.

Enjoy!

Reading Ruth: MK Ruth Calderon In The Hotseat

No, by "Reading Ruth," I do not mean reading Megillath Ruth from the Tana"kh (Bible), which is traditionally read by many on the upcoming holiday of Shavu'oth.

Rather, I mean I mean "Reading," as in the art of insult, and "Ruth," as in MK Ruth Calderon.

Are you sitting down? Good. Here I go.

Tablet: Ruth Calderon Calls Out Bigotry
Condemns anti-Arab racism and homophobia at controversial religious Zionist conference

Yair Rosenberg, April 18, 2013

Readers may remember Dr. Ruth Calderon as the new member of Knesset who turned her first parliamentary address into a Talmud lecture, the video of which quickly went viral. The Torah is not the property of any stream,” said Calderon, a secular Talmud teacher who has founded pluralistic Jewish study houses across Israel, during the speech. “We gave it away, when we thought there was a more important task, to build the army and the state and farming and industry. Now we must take back what is ours.”

Since then, as a result of her activism in Israeli society and now her role in the Knesset as a member of Yesh Atid, Calderon has emerged as the standard bearer for a new generation of non-Orthodox and non-religious Israelis seeking to reclaim their heritage, and to break the country’s Orthodox monopoly on Judaism.(cont.)

Esser Agaroth (2¢):
"Whateva! I do what I want!"
MK Ruth Calderon is fed up with homophobia? No problem. You will see the place of honor I grant one former member of the GLBTQ community below. I say "former," because s/he's dead.

Now, as for the all of those words above, I have highlighted in red, they are simply code phrases for "Whateva! I do what I want!"

They support the notion that something more than "Talumdic scholarship" is at play here.

Sheesh! I have already brought up MK Ruth Calderon a few times on Esser Agaroth (2¢), and she has only been an MK for a few months! If this keeps up, I may even have to add a "MK Ruth Calderon" topic label.

The so called "right-wing" Ramle conference allowed her to participate, and ended up with egg on its face.

Would a leftist conference do the same? I think not.

And what did MK Ruth Calderon talk about? Being fed up with anti-Arab racism. Remember, I suggested that I would stay away from the issue of homophobia,...for now.

And, why do you suppose that there are anti-Arab racists in Israel?

Rockets from the south, rockets from the north, bombings, shootings, and attempted poisonings aside, of course...

MK Ruth Calderon's "Talmudic scholarship" should have taught her about the nature of Yishma'el. The nature of this people stems all the way back from its who was described as a "wild ass of a man" (Gen. 16:12).

It is true, that in the end Yishma'el did do teshuvah. He repented. However, his children did not.

MK Ruth Calderon should know that throughout Tana"kh (The Bible), and in the Talmudim of which she is supposed to be a "scholar," there are countless references to the nature of the Yishma'elites: thieving, marauding, and debauchery. Having no connection to the Land of Israel WHATSOEVER, it is clear that Yishma'elites have crossed into Israel when it is weak, taken advantage of that weakness, and have then left, moving onto their next victims.

But, she apparently does not.

Yet, MK Ruth Calderon should have observed the change in strategy by the Yishma'elim. When seeing that the Jews would building up the Land, they flowed into Israel, from all over. They came from Syria, from Lebanon (the southern part of which is really Israel, which she should know), from Jordan, and from Egypt. Either the Ottoman authorities did not care, or they encouraged it.

Then in 1967, because force is what Yishma'elites understand, they started to settled down, realizing that the Jews are here to stay, and maybe even that God was on our side after all, and started working with Jews, even becoming employed by them.

But, apparently, she did not.

MK Ruth Calderon should also have heard the expression...

There is no promiscuity like the promiscuity of Yishma'el.
-Avoth d'Rabbi Nathan (among others)

But, apparently, she has not.

MK Ruth Calderon should be familiar with post-Talmudic history, such as the dawn of Islam, which including the near genocide of Jews residing in the Southern Arabian Penninsula. Even today, Jews are banned from Saudi Arabia. But, of course, no one wants to discuss THAT in the mainstream news media, or to call it racist, lest someone decides to pull the plug on their oil supply!

But, apparently, she is not.

But, maybe I have been unfair to MK Ruth Calderon. Maybe she does know all of the above, but...
1. She doesn't believe any of what she is a "scholar" in
2. OR she is naive, and believes in the Western/assimilationist line of trying to force the Arab's square peg into a Western, circular hole.
3. OR she is quite skilled in manipulating the sources, and I have, indeed, underestimated her.
"She Who Must
Not Be Named"
MK Ruth Calderon receives a score of one (nope. not a Sea Hag, but a) "She Who Must Not Be Named," for not even bothering to try to convince us why women should not have to cover their hair.

Now, to hammer the point home, I have included a video, which explains the concept of "reading."

I doubt I did as good of a job that the interviewee in the video could have done, but tried my best at "Reading Ruth."

I have no doubt that this video will offend many, the religious due to its content, and the GLBTQ community and their friends, for daring to apply it in this context. Yet, with everybody, including religious Jews, buzzing about, and raving about gay marriage, having fallen prey to the distraction strategies of the "powers that be," you will be seeing quite a bit of leftist content on Esser Agaroth (2¢) thrown back into faces of hypocrites leftist.

In other words, Leftists, prepare to get a taste of your own medicine.

Actually, it will be more like a choking gulp than a taste.

**Profanity Alert!**

The "Legendary Mother," Dorian Corey (R. I. P.)
explains the arts of insult "Reading" and "Shade,"
in a clip from the film "Paris Is Burning" (1990).

Hmm,... What DON'T I have to tell MK Ruth Calderon?

Founded by Soccer Dad, Haveil Havalim is a carnival of Jewish blogs -- a weekly collection of Jewish & Israeli blog highlights, tidbits and points of interest collected from blogs all around the world. It's hosted by different bloggers each week and jointly coordinated through our Facebook GroupThe term 'Haveil Havalim,' which means"Vanity of Vanities," is from Qoheleth, (Ecclesiastes) which was written by King Solomon. King Solomon built the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and later on got all bogged down in materialism and other 'excesses' and realized that it was nothing but 'hevel,' or in English, 'vanity.'
Let's get right to this week's edition!

What Did Ruth Cling To?

Erev Shabbath Qodesh Parashath Bamidbar 5772

The recounting of Creation in the Book of Genesis follows a pattern.  The description of each day concludes in the same way:
בראשית א,ה וַיְהִי-עֶרֶב וַיְהִי-בֹקֶר, יוֹם אֶחָד
Genesis 1:5 ...And there was evening and there was morning, one day.
Genesis 1:8 ...And there was evening and there was morning, a second day.
etc.

But, on the sixth day, the pattern changes slightly:
בראשית א,לא וַיְהִי-עֶרֶב וַיְהִי-בֹקֶר, יוֹם הַשִּׁשִּׁי
Genesis 1:31 ...And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
All of a sudden, a letter "heh" appears in the pattern, where it had been absent until now.  RaSh"I explains this "heh" to mean one of two things, or perhaps both.  The gematria (numerological value) of the letter "heh" is 5.  He suggests this to represent the five books of the Torah.  The alternative is that "the sixth" day is the sixth day of the month of Sivan, in other words, on Shavu'oth, when we received the Torah at Mt. Sinai.

The world was created, at least in part, in order to give Am Yisra'el the merit of receiving the Torah.  And, we see this hinted to, already within the recounting of it Creation in the Book of Genesis.

The sudden appearance of the "heh" here cries out for an explanation.  My guess is that RaSh"I received a tradition regarding this "heh" and passed that tradition onto us.

In the Scroll of Ruth, read publicly or privately by most Jews on Shavu'oth, a non-Israelite woman leaves her people, her family, and her religion, in order to enter Klal Yisra'el.

Ruth's mother-in-law Na'omi attempts to convince her to return to her family after her husband dies.  Her sister-in-law Orpah is convinced.  Ruth is not.
Ruth 1: 14 And they lifted up their voice, and wept again; and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law; but Ruth clung to her.
The traditional p'shat, or surface meaning of this verse is that Ruth either grabbed Na'omi's garment, or clung to her figuratively.  As we say in English, she "stuck by her."  Applying RaSh"I's take on the letter "heh" here, and suggest that here, too, it represents the Torah.  In addition to being represented by the number 5, Torah is grammatically feminine, albeit so is Na'omi.

And, although, I may be pushing it, I'll just suggest that it is a nice "d'rash," and that two verses later, Ruth, herself states her intentions:

Ruth 1: 16-17 And Ruth said: 'Entreat me not to leave you, and to return from following after you; for where you go, I will go; and where you sleep, I will sleep; thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God; where you die, will I die, and there will I be buried; the LORD do so to me, and more also, that [only] death separate us.'
In other words, she intends to cling the ways of her mother-in-law's people, the way of the Torah.

The Custom of Going to the Kotel on Shavu'oth

8 of the Third Month 5770

The custom of going to the Kotel, the “Western Wall,” isn't exactly the ancient custom everyone might think it is.

Remember, going up to Jerusalem to bring sacrifices for the holiday meant Although there are those who would like you to believe it is the same thing, it isn't,...far from it. The Kotel is not a part of the Miqdash (The Temple); it is part of the current retaining wall, as it were, of Har HaBayith (Temple Mount).

This custom of visiting the Kotel on Hag HaShavu'oth, interestingly enough, started one week after the day we now celebrate as Yom Yerushalayim.

Religious Jews from across the spectrum took the opportunity staring them in the face, to come as close as the could, or as close as they dared, to Har HaBayith.

Satmar Hassidim make up at least one group of Jews which avoid the Kotel, in order that it should not become the focus for avodah zarah. I have not too many people moving in this direction. Yet, they have a fair point. After, our focus should be on Har HaBayith.

This is also increasingly, albeit gradually, becoming the custom of a segment of the Religious Zionist community, among others, which has woken up to this misdirected focus, and are doing their best to correct it, by raising awarenes, ascending Har HaBayit in the proper manner (ie. kosher immersion, no leather, etc.), and encouraging others to do the same.

However, there are those who believe we should continue to frequent the Kotel area, if for no other reason than to combat the increasing Christian presence there, as well as in the nearby City of David. This certainly makes for a compelling argument.

In any event, let us never lose sight of what is behind the Kotel, and becoming increasingly more accessible to Jews. We must maintain and do what we can to increase that access, eventually retake control of it, and see the Hillul HaShem wiped out!

Below is a clip of Rabbi Moshe Dovid Tendler on Har HaBayit, accompanied by Rabbi Tovia Singer (courtesy of Kumah.org), followed by some additional resources. The full version can easily be found on YouTube.com. If you don't accept other rabbi's opinions of the acceptibility of ascending Har HaBayit, then perhaps you will accept Rabbi Tendler's.

Jerusalem Day Victory?

Yom Yerushalayim 5769

Sorry to put a damper on your Yom Yerushalayim celebrations, but Jewlicious posted a photo on twitpic, on which I just couldn't resist commenting, not on Jewlicious's post of the photo, but of the concept. (Photo Tip-off: Occidental Israeli)

By the way, it is a nice photo of Jews entering the Old City through the Shchem Gate, with indirect, "Magic Hour" lighting. But, why was it decided to go through that gate? Is it supposed to be such a big deal?
My comment:
Good. The mamlachtim (undying state loyalists) are doing something right.

Hmm...nah, wait a minute. It probably wasn't their idea. But if it was, it was for wimpy, "symbolic," reasons. What will they do now when they ban us from entering through this same gate on Shavu'oth, due to the previous week's "provocation?"

Absolutely nothing.

They should have gone through Sha'ar HaAryoth (Lions Gate) or Sha'ar HaP'rahim (Flower Gate) and marched through the Muslim Quarter.
The great victory of 42 years ago, the miracles which HaQadosh Barukh Hu (The Holy One, Blessed Be He) performed for us, deserve a little more umpf than gawking at women dancing, as if Israeli flags make it kosher.

How many of those pictured in the photo will say Al HaNissim tonight and tomorrow?

...I doubt it will be very many. I doubt that very many of their Roshei Yeshivoth has even mentioned the existence of such a thing.
