אלי סיבס (19), סטודנט במגמת תיאטרון וקולנוע באוניברסיטת UCLA בלוס אנג'לס, ניסה להגיע לכיתה שלו - אך נעצר על ידי כמה סטודנטים עטופי כאפיות ומסיכות פנים. סיבס, שענד שרשרת מגן דוד, הוציא את תעודת הסטודנט שלו וביקש שיניחו לו לעבור, אבל הם עמדו מולו כחומה. (תראו את הסרטון מהאינסטגרם שלו להלן)

אז למה אני כותב על הסטודנט המסוים הזה? האם יש עוד פעילים כמוהו באוניברסיטות אחרות שונות?
ראשית, אלי סיבס מקבל איומים על חייו על תמיכה בזכויות היסודיות של עמו ולמולדתו.
אני גם בוגר UCLA, סיימתי את לימודים וקיבלתי תואר ראשון בשנת 1987. אז מה שקורה ב-UCLA מרגיש כמו מכה בבית שלי. צפייה בחדשות היום מעניקה משמעות חדשה לאחד מהכינויים של האוניברדיטה אז, JewCLA. אמרו לנו שאוכלוסיית הסטודנטים באותה תקופה הייתה 28 אחוז יהודים. כולנו חשבנו שהכינוי היה חמוד וגם פוגע בו זמנית. אפילו עם האוכלוסייה היהודית הגדולה של לוס אנג'לס, וש-UCLA היה (עדיין?) בעיקר אוניברסיטה לנוסעים, רובנו עדיין החלטנו להתגאות בסטטיסטיקה.
אני שמרתי במסורת דילוג על המדרגה השישית תוך כדי הליכה במדרגות ג׳אנס. שילמתי כניסה זולה מאוד כדי לצפות לסרטים ולתצוגות מקדימות באולם הגדול בבית אקרמן. נכנסתי למנהרות התחתיות. אני אפילו הייתי חבר אח באירגון אחווה, שכנראה מעדיף שאני לא מזכיר את שמו. אני מניח שאני קיצוני מדי בשבילם. אין צריך לומר שאיגון אחווה זה אחד מאירגוני אחווה היהודיים.
אני גם הגעתי למועדונות לילה בהוליווד [יותר מדי]. אני גם למדתי,... מדי פעם. ועד לשנה ג׳ (יש ד׳ שנים), לא היו צריכים לפתוח את הדלתות של המעונות שלי, בית ריבר, באמצע הלילה, וגם לא להציג את תעודת הסטודנט שלי כדי להיכנס. אגב, בית ריבר, נודע בחיבה בשם "טמפל בת' ריבר" כלומר הוא בעיקר בית יהודים אני בטוח שבקלות אפשר לנחש למה.
כשאני לא הייתי במסיבות או מועדוני לילה לעשות בלגנים בחיים שלי, ההתכבדתי וזכיתי להיות עד להקמת האירגון יהודים למען יהדות, התגובה היהודית למיסיונרים, על ידי הרב בנציון קרביץ, וראיתי אותו מציל יהודים מכתות, כולל ״יהודים למען יש״ו״. אני מאמין שזה היה אחד האירועים החשובים ביותר שחוויתי ב-UCLA. באמת מעשה שמציג את ״היהודים שלא מוכנים לסבול ויותר״.
הצטרפתי לאיגוד הסטודנטים היהודי של UCLA, והשתתפתי בכמה הפגנות, כולל מטעם ה-Refusniks (הסרבנים), יהודים שלא קיבלו אישור לעלות לישראל משלטונות ברית המועצות.
פעם אחת, מועצת הסטודנטים לתואר ראשון [USAC] ערכה אירוע רשמי למועדונים ואגודות השייכים לה להפגש עם אחד מנבחרי הציבור שלה. האירוע התקיים בשבת. הם סירבו לשנות את יום האירוע. ולכן אני הלכתי כנציג המחאה שלנו, סירבתי להרשות לעצמי להרשם. אני סירבתי לתת ליהודי השני שנכח במקום לרשום אותי. סירבתי לאכול שום דבר או לרשום הערות במחברת. יצאתי מוקדם ולא לקחתי אף אחד מהחומרים שנתתו לי. (לא קיים עירוב חצרות באזור) אתם חושבים שאכפת לכם? בכלל לא.

העניין הכי הגדול וחשוב בימינו ב-וUCLA היה האפרטהייד בדרום אפריקה ולהפגין נגד זה. היו מחאות ואפילו המפגינים הצליחו לשבור את הדלתות כדי להכנס לאולם רויס איפה התקיים מפגש מועצת רשת האוניברסיטה. בימים ההם היו תשעה קמפוסים. מהר קדימה להיום, למרבה האירוניה ראינו את ישראל מואשמת באותו דבר האפרטהייד, ודרום אפריקה הביאה אותנו לבית הדין לצדק הבינלאומי [ICJ], בטענה לרצח עם. האם אנחנו באמת צריכים להעלות את העובדה שאין דבר כזה עם פלסטיני, ואפילו לנסות רצח עם פירושו השתלטות על כל חצי האי ערב וחלקים מצפון אפריקה? (הערבים המזדהים כפלסטינאים הם פשוט... ערבים.)
העובדה שהותקפנו באכזריות ופשוט הגבנו כדי לשמור את עצמנו מהתקפות עתידות על ידי חמאס לא אכפת לאף אחד. כל מדינה שעושה את אותו הדבר לא הייתה נלחצת להגיע לבית הדין הבינלאומי. כמה פעמים עם ישראל צריך לחוות את המוסר הכפול של כל אומות העולם עד שהוא מבין שהם לעולם לא ישנו את דעתם עלינו?
ב-UCLA, אמצע שנות ה-80, אנחנו ראינו את הביטוי "ציונות שווה גזענות" במחנות האוהלים של המפגינים נגד האפרטהייד. המקום השני איפה ראינו את הביטוי היה בדלת של איגוד הסטודנטים האמריקאים אפריקאים.
אז מה הכוונה שלי בכתיבת כל זה? אלי סיבס הוא דוגמה מצוינת לסטודנטים יהודים, באמת ליהודים בכל מקום, בארה"ב, בקמפוסים של אוניברסיטות ומכללות, ובדיוק ההפך
מקהילות היהודים מעדיפות להתחנף לטרוריסטים ערבים. (כן. אני כתבתי את זה.)
כיוון שציבס אדם חכם ושם לב, הוא ידע היטב כי תיעוד האירוע שהוזכר להלן, יותר טוב ויעיל מלהכנס לאוניברסיטה בכוח.
עם זאת, סטודנטים יהודים ב-UCLA, קולומביה, אוניברסיטת טקסס באוסטין, יהודים בכל מקום צריכים לקבל שהמצב הנוכחי רק ימשיך להחמיר.אין סיכוי שהוא ישתפר פרט לתקופה זמנית. לאחרונה
בשנת 2019, UCLA קיבלה מנה משמעותית של שנאת יהודים. אבל, כרגיל, זה "טופל", וכולם המשיכו הלאה.
מה קרה לנו? האם אנחנו כל כך נואשים לקבל את האהבה, החיבה והקבלה מהגוים עד שאנחנו נאלצים לסבול אפליה, דברי שטנה, גרפיטי ואלימות? יאללה. האם כולכם לא רואים שאתם פשוט חוזרים על אותן טעויות שוב, ומצפים לתוצאות שונות?
אלי, אני יודע שהוליווד וברודווי לא נמצאים בישראל. אפילו כמה שחקנים ישראלים כמו גל גדות, ענבר לביא (משחקי הכס, לוציפר), ותומר קפון (הבנים) נסעו במסע המפרך, התמאמצו, השקיעו, והשתדלו כמו שצריך בהוליווד.
אבל אולי עם הנראות האחרונה שלך תוכל להשתמש במיומנויות התקשורת שלך בדרכים שעדיין לא חשבת עליהן. דובר צה"ל עולה בראש. וכן, אני יודע טוב מדי, שההורים שלך כנראה מצפים ממך לקבל את פיסת הנייר שאנחנו מכנים תעודת התואר. אבל... אפשר לעשות את זה
בישראל.
רוב הזמן היהודים בארה"ב דאגו עלינו שבישראל. אני עצמי גר כמה קילומטרים מגבול לבנון. כיום אני הרבה יותר מודאג לגבי האחים והאחיות שלי בארה"ב. אני הדוד האמריקאי-ישראלי שלך שעוד לא הכרת, שדואג עליך. וזה יכול להיות נכון לכולכם הסטודנטים היהודים באוניברסיטות.

כשאני מזכיר ליהודים שארה"ב היא רק מקלט זמני עבורנו, ורק עד שהשערים ייפתחו לנו לשוב למולדתנו האמיתית היחידה, ארץ ישראל, ואז אני מודיע להם שהשערים, אכן, פתוחים לרווחה, הם פשוט מחייכים ומתרצים,... או עושים משהו יותר גרוע מזה. אבל, אולי כשאלי ויזל עושה את זה סופו של דבה יהודים מוכנים להקשיב.

There is no question in my mind that Eli Tsives, and students like him, are setting an important example. We Jews have had enough, and are not going to take it anymore. Even more so, as an aspiring actor...
(Yes, he IS already an actor, but you know what I mean.)... Eli Tsives has seen the lines drawn in the sand, and how his actions can affect his future career.
Speak out on behalf of your people or
wear a red pin at the Oscars? Eli has chosen to speak out.
So, why am I writing about this student? Aren't they more out there doing the same thing?
Well, first off, Eli is now getting threats on his life for support his people's basic rights, not to mention his homeland.
I, myself, also went to UCLA, graduating in 1987, so this strikes very close to home. Watching the news today, gives new meaning to one of UCLA's nicknames back then, JewCLA. The student population at that time was said to be 28 percent Jewish. We all thought it was simultaneously cute and offensive. Even with the large Jewish population of Los Angeles, and that UCLA was (is?) mostly a commuter school, most of us still decided to take pride in this statistic.
I held to the tradition skipping the sixth step while walking up Janns Steps. I went to the insanely cheap movies and previews at I explored the steam tunnels. I was even in a Fraternity, which would probably prefer I did not mention its name. I suppose I am too extreme for them. Needless to say it was one of the Jewish ones.
I never played water polo in high school like Tsives, but swam competitively, and worked as a lifeguard during summer breaks. Same crowd.
Personally, I also partied [too often] in Hollywood, when partying in Hollywood was a thing. I also studied, on occasion. And until my junior year, I did not have to have the front doors of my dorm, Rieber Hall unlocked for me in the middle of the night, nor show my student ID to be allowed in. Incidentally, Rieber Hall, was affectionately known as "Temple Beth Rieber." I am sure that you can guess why.
When I wasn't messing around, taking seminars at the College of the Streets at the University of Life, I had the honor and privilege of witnessing the founding of Jews for Judaism by Rabbi Bentzion Kravitz, and saw him rescue Jews from cults, including
Jews for Jesus. I believe that was one of the most important events I experienced at UCLA. Truly an act of
"Jews aren't gonna take it anymore."
I became involved with UCLA's Jewish Student Union, and participated in a few demonstrations, including on behalf of the
Refusniks, the Jews who had applied for exit visas, but were barred from leaving the, now former, Soviet Union.
Once, the Undergraduate Students Association Council [USAC] held an official event for clubs to meet with one of its elected officials. It was all day, and it was on Saturday, as in Shabbat. I went as our protest representative, refusing to allow myself to be signed in [by the other Jew who was in attendance], refused to eat anything or take any notes. I left early, and did not carry any of the materials away with me. Do you think anyone cared? No, they did not.
No, this post is not about me. Please read on.
The big issue in our day was protesting Apartheid in South Africa. Fast forward, ironically we have seen Israel accused of the same thing, and good ol' South Africa taking us to the International Court of Justice [ICJ], claiming genocide. Do we really need to bring up the fact that there is no such thing as a
Palestinian People, and to even attempt genocide would mean taking on the entire Arabian Peninsula, and parts of North Africa?
(Hint: Those Arabs identifying as Palestinians are... Arabs.) No, we do not. Besides, even a lot of Jews demonstrating in the U. S. on the side of Israel what react with "Wut?!"
The fact that we were viciously attacked, and simply responding to make sure that would not happen again is apparently irrelavent. Any country doing the same thing would not have been dragged into court. How many times does this have to have to the Jewish People and Israel before the phrase "double standards, and they're never changing their minds" finally becomes ingrained in our heads?
Back to UCLA, mid-1980s, needless to say, the phrase
"Zionism Equals Racism" reared its ugly head at the anti-Apartheid [wait for it] protestor tent camps. The front of the door to the Black Students Alliance was where the phrase made its next appearance. But, I think I will leave that one alone for now.
So, what is my point in writing all this? Eli Tsives is a great example of Jewish students, really Jews everywhere, in the U. S., on college campuses, and quite the opposite of those whose
communities prefer to pander to Arab terrorists.
(Yes. I went there.)
Being the intelligent and observant person that Tsives is, he knew all too well that recording the incident mentioned above, rather than use force, was the better option.
However, Jews, Jewish students at UCLA, Columbia, University of Texas, Austin, everywhere need to accept that this only going to get worse, not better. Do not be fooled by anything that will invariably turn out to be temporary. As recently as 2019,
UCLA received a significant dose of Jew-hatred. But, as usual, is was "handled," and everyone moved on.
What is with us? Are we so desperate for the love, affection, and acceptance from non-Jews that we are compelled to endure discrimination, hate speech, graffiti, AND violence? C'mon already. Can't you all see that you are just repeating the same mistakes over again, expecting different results?
Eli, I know that Hollywood, and for that matter Broadway, is not located in Israel. Even several Israeli actors such as Gal Gadot, Inbar Lavi (Game of Thrones, Lucifer), and Tomer Capone (The Boys) have made the arduous trek and paid their dues in Hollywood. But even Gadot maintains a home here. I believe that Lavi does as well.
But perhaps with your recent visibility you can use your communication skills in ways you had not yet thought of. IDF spokesperson comes to mind. And, yeah, I know all too well, that your parents probably expect you to get that piece of paper we call a diploma. But... you can do that
in Israel.
You see, most of the time it is the Jews in the U. S. who worried about those of us in Israel. I myself live six miles from the Lebanese border. So there you go. But, these days, I am much more worried about my brothers and sisters in the U. S. I'm your American-Israeli uncle you haven't met yet, who is worried sick about you. And that goes for all of you Jewish university students.
Eli, don't make me do it. OK. I'm doing it. I'm throwing your Elie Wiesel quote back at you. “When a Jew visits Jerusalem for the first time, it is not the first time; it is a homecoming.”
When I remind Jews that the U. S. is only a temporary refuge for us, only until the gates for us to return to our only true homeland, the Land of Israel, and then point out that the gates are, indeed, wide open, it usually falls on deaf ears,... or worse. But, perhaps when Elie Wiesel does it, Jews are able to listen.
Eli, I hope to see you soon. I hope to see all of you soon. And I pray that your journey will be an easy one.
This incessant petitioning of non-Jews for their love, support, and validation for our very existence my stop. Saying thank-you is one thing. But, slobbering over the non-Jewish supporter of Israel, whether Christian, Muslim, Hindu, or atheist is nothing less than pathetic.
