Why I Cannot Vote for the Noam Party

Noam Party
A Normal People in Our Land
About two weeks ago, I passed by a Noam Party booth. The teenager standing there looked at me like he was deciding whether to approach me or not. I decided for him and approached him. I told him that even though there is no doubt that Rabbi Tau is Torah scholar, and that I appreciate what he is doing now {working against men and women serving together in the same  Israeli Defense Forces [IDF] units}, his followers are still too mamlakhti (diehard State loyalists), and so I still could not vote for his party. He said, "Really?"

"Really," I said, and left. But, then I stopped and went back to him. "Excuse me. But, would you refuse an IDF order that contradicts the Torah?"

"It depends," he answered.

I was actually very impressed with his response. In preparation for the expulsion of Jews from Azza (Gaza, including Gush Qatif) and northern Shomron (Samaria), Rabbi Tau did not favor refusing military orders. Of course, he told soldiers to ask for a job transfer or to faint or to act sick to avoid participating in the disengagement plan expulsion. So, it seems there is progress in the mamlakhti camp. That is, as Rabbi Tau sees and talks about the problems of the State of Israel, his students (rabbis who follow according to his teachings) and their students also see the problematic situation around them. But, in my opinion, they still have a way to go. They are still way too mamlakhti.

I cannot vote for them.

Note: I was contacted by fellow blogger Tomer Devorah who stated that Rav Tau actually said to his students, something like...

"...making a blanket ruling for all religious soldiers to disobey orders was not something he was willing to do at the time. But he said that it could not be that religious soldiers would throw any Jew out of his home. So, he said every religious soldier must tell his commander that he can not follow that order."

Why aren't Otzmah Yehudit and Noam Getting Married?

Noam Party
A Normal People in Our Land

Rabbi Tzvi Yehudah Kook ztz"l and Rabbi Meir Kahane hy"d at the Western Wall
Tomer Devorah explores the agreement between Otzmah Yehudit and Rabbi Tau's nascent Noam Party. She makes some very good and important points. However, I would like to expand upon them.

Otzmah Yehudit Party

Rabbi Tau has always been very mamlakhti (diehard state loyalist). Having learned with Rabbi Amital, who was eventually involved with the Meimad (religious faction of the Labor Party), this should come as no surprise.

The story of Rabbi Tau's exit from the Merkav HaRav Yeshiva and subsequent establishment of the Har HaMor Yeshiva is a bit more complicated than the historical disagreement regarding how to qualify teachers. But, I will not elaborate on this here.

Rabbi Avraham Shapira ztz"l
The main difference between Har HaMor and Merkav HaRav is that the Merkaz HaRav students were told to go out an protest the impending expulsion from Gaza (2005). The Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Avraham Shapira ztz"l (who ascended to the position over Rabbi Tau) told IDF soliders not only to refuse orders which violate the Torah, and not only to sit in jail for it, but also to be proud that they were sitting in jail because of this; whereas Rabbi Tau was very much against refusal of IDF orders.

The significance of Rabbi Tau's displeasure, to say the least with the IDF's co-ed units policy, ... He is actually acknowledging in a very grand way that the State is not perfect, and perhaps we no longer have to be "patient" with the non-religious Jews running the State, after all.

There is a story  that Rabbenu Tzvi Yehudah signed a letter saying (paraphrase) that it would be good that Rabbi Meir Kahane would be in the Knesset. The mamalakhti students claimed that Rabbi Tzvi Yehuda was starting to become senile, and so brushed off his signature on this letter. The eye witness testimony I received states that Rabbi Moshe Kaplan indeed brought such a letter to Rabbenu Tzvi Yehudah. The Rabbi read it, and signed it. But, this eye witness also states unequivocally that Rabbi Tzvi Yehudah maintained possession of all of his faculties until two weeks before his death.

www.rabbikahane.org
Yesterday, it seemed that one of the greatest scholars, of the mamlakhti camp, is willing to join with students of Rabbi Kahane, after years of disagreeing with much of his approach.

Yet, there is another story, which I have yet to confirm with any of the parties involved, that a young yeshiva student came to Rabbi Tau to seek counsel regarding his impending engagement. Rabbi Tau reportedly told this student that the woman's father was a hacham (Torah scholar), so what was the question? Soon after, that yeshiva student married the young lady in question, one of Rabbi Kahane's daughters.

This time around, Rabbi Tau is not so interested in a marriage between his students and those of Rabbi Kahane. Apparently, Otzmah Yehudit is open to including a secular candidate; whereas Noam is not. And, personally, I completely understand.

Haredi Bashers Need to Look in Their Own Backyards

Kippah via Life In Israel: People studying Torah must take parnassa from the public
March 12, 2013
Rabbi Zvi Tau
Rosh Yeshivath Har HaMor
...Rav Tau paskened that a talmid chochom who took upon himself to study Torah is like a soldier fulfilling his duty for the nation, and such a person has the right to take his parnassa from the general public. Rav Tao says people who learn Torah and get supported by the public must fulfill their duties faithfully, learning Torah l'shma and by giving up of themselves and in holiness, and not take advantage of the arrangement to receive pleasure or to get rich. But when he does, he is serving the entire nation, and if he should have to give up his toil in Torah in order to work to support his family, the entire public is hurt by it. Taking money for his livelihood by learning is part of taking responsibility for establishing the Torah in the nation. He should receive his parnassa from the nation...

He is like a soldier fulfilling his duty and it is upon the nation to support him.

Esser Agaroth (2¢):
How I could have missed this from last spring, I have no idea. Could it be that it just slipped by?

Merkaz HaRav Kook Yeshivah
Qiriyath Moshe
, Jerusalem
As pointed out by Life In Israel, The Har HaMor Yeshivah was a break off from the Merkaz HaRav Kook Yeshivah.

Rabbi Zvi Tau is part of the Triumvirate of Mamlakhi (Undying State Loyalists) rabbis, which also includes Rabbi Hayim Drukman and Shlomo Aviner. The mamlakhti school of thought refuses to acknowledge the increasing number of conflicts between halakhah (Torah Law) and Israeli Law.

On the other end of the Religious Zionist spectrum is Merkaz HaRav, the very yeshivah from with Har HaMor broke away.

Rabbi Avraham
Shapira ztz"l
Before and during the 2005/תשס"ה expulsion of Jews from Azza (Gaza) Rabbi Avraham Shapira ztz"l, Rosh Yeshivah of Merkaz HaRav at the time, instructed soldiers to refuse orders to throw Jews out of their homes and lands. And if that meant sitting in jail, as a result, then these soldiers should be proud to sit in jail.

This was a far crying from the undying State-loyalists, telling soldiers to faint, or pretend to be sick, or even to cry, and then carry out the orders.

This report was no surprise to me. I had already heard of the discrepancy between these two yeshivas in regard to the numbers of students who serve in the army.

I certainly agree with Rabbi Tau's belief that learning of Torah is a service to Israel, above and beyond a protection of Israel.

My point here is that some of the harshest critics of the Haredi Kollel mentality and model are the same mamlakhti "sheeple" whom hang every word spouting from their rabbis' mouths, including Rabbi Tau.

And so, I will ask the same question of Rabbi Tau, which mamlakhtim put to those Haredim requesting exemptions from army service:

Why should some of our children, Merkaz HaRav students for example, have to risk their lives defending our country, while others do not?
