אירוע חריג התרחש בסוף השבוע האחרון בסן פרנסיסקו, כאשר סקוט וינר, המכהן כסנטור של מדינת קליפורניה נאלץ להימלט ממצעד הטרנסג'נדרים המקומי, לאחר שהותקף מילולית על ידי המון זועם. וינר, המועמד להחליף את ננסי פלוסי בקונגרס, ספג קריאות גנאי וגידופים מצד המשתתפים בשל עמדותיו בנושא ישראל והמלחמה בעזה.

תיעוד האירוע, שהופץ ברשתות החברתיות על ידי פעיל פוליטי בשם דמיטרי יקושקין, הפך לוויראלי וצבר מיליוני צפיות. בסרטון נראה וינר פוסע בפארק דולורס בדרכו לתפילת שבת, בעוד עשרות מפגינים מקיפים אותו, מניפים אצבעות משולשות וצועקים לעברו קריאות פוגעניות. "זה מבאס, כי היית נפלא עבור קהילת הטרנסג'נדרים, אבל היית נורא בנושא עזה", הטיח בו אחד הנוכחים....

עשר אגורות (2¢):
זה נכון שקהילות להט"ב בארץ מבינים את המצב יותר מלהט"ב שבחו״ל.

קהילות להט"ב המיעוטים המיניים בארה"ב עדיין לא מבינות את מה שקורה במדינות מוסלמיות. חבריהן לא היו שורדים אפילו שנייה באזור בשליטת חמאס. הן לא היו שורדים אפילו שנייה באזור בשליטת פתח! (המפלגה המרכזית ברשות הפלסטינית [הרש"פ]).

הסנטור סקוט וינר סולק מאירוע של טרנסג'נדרים. נראה לי שאם שואלים את המשתתפים באירוע זה האם ידעת שישראל מעניקה מקלט פוליטי לאנשים טרנסג'נדרים שבורחים מהרשות הפלסטינית, הם היו עונים ״לא״ או שטוענים שהמדיניות הזו של מדינת ישראל היא שקר.

שנזכר כאן מתן מקלט לאנשים טרנסג'נדרים לא אומר שאני מסכים עם מדיניות זו. אני פשוט כותב שזו קיימת. אני למעשה מטיל ספק במתן מקלט לכל נכרי בארץ ישראל, שנאמר "לא תחנם" (דברים ז,ב).

לא משנה מה דעתכם על המוניטין של ישראל כמדינה הידידותית ביותר ללהט"ב במזרח התיכון, מדינות מוסלמיות נוהגות את ההפך הקיצוני.

למרות התמונה להלן, ערב הסעודית ידועה בכך שהיא זורקת גברים הומואים מגגות בניינים.

איראן ידועה בכך שהיא שולחת גברים הומואים לעבור ניתוח שינוי מגדר בכפייה. כלומר סירוס כפוי וטיפול הורמונלי חלופי, מתוך אמונה שהגברים האלה הוכנסו לגוף הלא נכון. האמונה שאלוהיהם יכולים לעשות טעויות כאלה היא שיחה אחרת לגמרי לפעם אחרת.

וכמו במדינות מוסלמיות רבות, ברש"פ יש מקרים של רצח על חילול כבוד במשפחה של נשים, אנשים טרנסג'נדרים, ולמרות פעילות מין הידועה של הרבה גברים ערבים*, יש מקרי רצח כבוד גם של גברים הומואים.

בשנת 2014, יהודים נעצרו, נשפטו והורשעו ברצח מוחמד אבו ח׳דיר. סימון בשלוש אצבעות שלו בתמונה יכולה לייצג תנועות למען הדמוקרטיה. אבל בישראל, זה היה סמל ידוע ברשתות החברתיות, המייצג את ,תמיכה לחטיפה ורצח של שלושת הנערים בגוש עציון הי״ד.

יש הרבה מאמינים שהווידויים של היהודים נכפו, ולמעשה אבו ח׳דיר נרצח על ידי ערבים בשל היותו הומו.

הרבה שואלים למה מנסים לשכנע את קהילות של יהודים שבשוליים?

למה לא?

אין שום קשר לדעות שלי לגבי הפעולות שלהם בישראל, כמו ומצעדי גאווה. אני מתנגד.

דבר אחד לפרסם ולהציע דרכים לקבל תמיכה באלו הנאבקים בפנים מבחינה פסיכולוגית ורוחנית. עוד דבר לספק נראות חיוביות כדי לאפשר לבני נוער מדוכאים, ואפילו אובדניים, שהם לא לבד ושיש להם תקווה. דבר אחר לגמרי לעודד, אפילו להתגאות, במעשים אסורים על פי התורה.

ולכן אין הפתעה שיש יהודים מסוימים קוראים למצעדת גאווה ״מצעדת מרד״, ובמיוחד בירושלים.

הערה: אני לא מתנגד למחאות להט"ב נגד טיפולי המרה מסורתיים, מכיוון שאני מאמין שהם שטויות.

אני אומר את אותו הדבר ליהודים ימניים וליהודים שמאלניים, ליהודים דתיים וליהודים חילונים בחו״ל. ארץ ישראל היא מולדתכם האמיתית היחידה. האם ביקרתם כאן, או ניסיתם לגור כאן, אבל לא הצלחתם? ולא אהבתם איך הדברים פועלים כאן? האם אתם מאמינים למה שאתם שומעים בחדשות וצופים ברשתות החברתיות, ולא אוהבים את זה?

אז אלה האתגרים שעליכם להתגבר עליהם. אל תצפו ששום דברים ישתנו בן לילה אחד, אלא אם כן תעלו למטוס, תעלו (או חזרו) לארץ ישראל, תשתתפו ותעשו את חלקכם.

וזה אמור לענות על השאלה שלכם למה אכפת לי. יהודים מוטעים לא יהודים פחות מכולנו, וגם לא פחות ראויים להשקעה שלנו.

California state Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, said he was forced to leave San Francisco's Trans March at Dolores Park on Friday after demonstrators confronted him over Israel and Gaza, in a viral episode that unfolded as [San Francisco] Pride Weekend began.

The video showed several people surrounding Wiener as he walked through the park, with multiple hecklers shouting profanity-laced messages.

"We f---ing hate you!"

Dimitry Yakoushkin, who posted the clip to X, could be heard criticizing Wiener’s position on the war in Gaza as the Democratic lawmaker moved away from the crowd....

LGBTQs The so-called sexual minority communities in the US still don’t get it. They wouldn’t survive a second in a Hamas controlled area. They wouldn’t survive a second in a Fatah controlled area! Fatah is the mainstream political party in the Palestinian Authority [PA]

The event from which State Sen. Scott Wiener was a trans event. I would imagine that if you ask any on the participants if they knew of Israel providing political asylum to transgender individuals, fleeing the PA, the answer would either be no, or met with accusations of making such a thing up.

The mention of granting asylum to transgender individuals should not suggest any agreement with this policy of the State of Israel on my part. I am simply mentioning it. I actually question the granting of asylum to any non-Jews within the Land of Israel, as it says "Do not have mercy" (Deut. 7:2). 

This should also not suggest any support on my part for any of these communities. I say communities, plural, as they are not nearly as cohesive, as we are led to believe in the mainstream media.

However you feel about Israel's reputation for being the most LGBT-friendly country in the Middle East, Muslim go too far in the opposite direction.

In spite of the meme depicted here, Saudi Arabia is known for throwing gay men off of roofs.

Iran is known for the forced gender-reassignment of gay men. To be clear, this means forced castration, and hormone replacement therapy [HRT], believing that these men were put into the wrong body. Their belief that their deity can make such mistakes is a whole other conversation for another time.

And, as in many Muslim countries, in the PA, there are incidents of honor killings, of women, transgendered individuals, and, despite the sexual indiscriminateness of many Arab men, gay men.*

In 2014, Jews were arrested, tried, and convicted for the murder of Mohamed Abu Khdeir. The three finger salute can represent pro-democracy movements. However, in Israel, it was a known symbol going around social media, representing Arab support for the kidnapping and murder of the three boys in Gush Etzion hy"d.

Many believe that the Jews' confessions were coerced, and that Abu Khdeir was actually killed by Arabs for being gay.

Many will ask why bother trying to convince these fringe communities of Jews? Why shouldn't we?

This has nothing to do with my objections to the actions of these communities in Israel, such as pride festivals.

It is one thing to publicize and offer support for those who are struggling psychologically and spiritually. It is another to provide positive visibility to let depressed, and even suicidal teenagers they are not alone and can find help. It is another one completely to encourage, even take "pride" in, engaging in behavior, forbidden by the Torah.

It is no wonder that some Jews refer to pride celebrations as festivals of rebellion, especially within the Holy City of Jerusalem.

Note: I do not mind LGBT protests against traditional conversion therapy, since I believe it to be a load of crap.

I tell right-wing Jews and left-wing Jews, religious Jews and secular Jews the same thing. The Land of Israel is your only, true homeland. Have you visited, or tried living here, but couldn't make it? Did you not like how things operated? Do you believe what you hear in the news and see on social media, and don't like it?

Well, then these are your challenges to overcome. Do not expect anything to change over night, unless you get on the plane, relocate, pitch in, and do your part.

And that should answer your question as to why bother. Misguided and misled Jews are not any less Jewish than any of us, nor less deserving of our investment.

A pair of rowdy sea lions were caught on video chasing beachgoers at La Jolla Cove and causing panic on a crowded beach.

A viral video shows the moment two sea lions charged through a crowd at La Jolla Cove over the weekend, sending people into a frenzy. But experts tell KGTV the sea mammals were not actually going after the beachgoers.

"The perception is that the sea lion is chasing after people, and that’s not it at all," Eric Otjen, vice president of zoological operations at SeaWorld San Diego, told KGTV.

Southern California’s beaches and coves may see an increase in sea lions from May through July as the animals enter breeding season, according to the Dolphin Research Center.

"And they all have territories. And some of them don’t have territories. So, the smaller guy running through the crowd of people is the one just looking for a spot to breed," Otjen said. "And the bigger male that you see come in at the very end of that video is the one whose territory he was trying to take over." (cont.)

I was born and raised in San Diego. But my parents did not take us to La Jolla Cove very often, since it was good, extra 20 to 30 minutes farther to drive, than getting to the closest beach to home.

So, the answer to your next question is no, we did not live in the wealthy Jewish neighborhood. We lived significantly more inland than the La Jolla neighborhood. And, yes, it is a neighborhood, not a city.

As a kid, I swam the rough water competition here, did some of my lifeguard training here, and watched a sunset or two from the top of the Cove.

I remember when there weren't any sea lions on this beach. Sea lions could usually be found sunbathing on docks. Then they pretty much took over part of the Cove. We natives knew to stay away. The tourists? Not so much. I am pretty sure that there signs, though.

Often when I tell native Israelis that I left this city to move to Israel, they wonder why or they even tell me that I lost my mind.

San Diego was a great place to grow up, to explore, to show friends visiting from another city of state, and a great place to party. Besides the beach, it's next to Mexico, not far from the desert, and only a couple of hours to Los Angeles or Palm Springs.

But it's not Israel, the only true homeland of the Jewish People.

הנהלת בית הכנסת הקונסרבטיבי "המקום" בלוס אנג'לס שבארה"ב הודיעה על התפטרותה, זאת בעקבות הסערה שהתעוררה בהמשך לפרסום ב-ynet על כך שבמקום התקיים אירוע שבו כוסו כרזות החטופים המוחזקים בשבי חמאס. תמונות המתעדות את הכרזות המכוסות גרמו לזעם רב בקהילה, מה שהוביל לדיון חירום שכינסה ההנהלה עקב איום של מאות חברים בפרישה. בתום הדיון, ההנהלה כתבה לחברי הקהילה: "אנחנו כותבים כדי לשתף שהנשיאים המשותפים שלנו הגישו את התפטרותם מתפקידם. ההחלטה מגיעה בעקבות האתגרים והתבוננות פנימית שהקהילה שלנו עוברת עכשיו". דניאל אדלסון, ניו יורק, 14.03.2024

כמה עובדות חסרות בכתבה זו:

• הם כיסו את כרזות החטופים לכבד את קבוצת המוסלמים ששכרה את המקום לסעודת האיפטאר בסיום הצום היום בחודש רמדאן.
• אחד הדוברים האמורים לדבר באירוע השווה את פעולות ישראל בעזה לגרמניה בשלטון הנאצים.
• חוסאם עילוש הוא המנהיג הוותיק של סניף לוס אנג'לס של המועצה ליחסים בין ארצות הברית לאסלאם (CAIR), אחד הארגונים הערבים-אמריקאים הגדולים בארה״ב. באירוע שנערך בסוף השנה שעברה, הוא אמר שלישראל "אין הזכות להגן על עצמה, ככובשת להגן על עצמה מפני הנכבשים. לא, זה לא, זה לא דבר רטורי. זה לא. משפטית, על פי החוק הבינלאומי. לאף כובש אין זכות להגן על עצמו מפני הנכבשים".

בארץ התנועה ה״קונסרבטיבית״ נקראת התנועה המסורתית. לא להתבלבל. הם לא הנציגים של המסורתים בארץ שמכבדים את התורה, אבל לא שומרים אותה לגמרי. יש ל״קונסרבטיטבים״ השקפה מסוימת.

אני לא יכול להחליט למה דבר כזה עדיין קורה.

• מחלת תלות שיתופית? הם כל-כל רוצים אהבה ואישור מהגוים? הם צריכים את זה?
• יש להם ראשים של גלות עד כדי כך?
• הם מאמינים שעם ישראל פשוט כמו כל אומות אחרות בעולם? גלובליסטים?
• כל מה שרשום לעיל?

כמובן, אני מבין את ההכרח "להסתדר" ו״להשתלב״ עם הלא-יהודים, בזמן הישארות בארה"ב (אני יודע שרבים מכם לא רוצים לשמוע את זה, אבל זה נקרא גלות.). אפילו היה לי חבר מוסלמי ועוד מכרים מוסלמים בארה"ב בזמן שלמדתי באוניברסיטה. כדאי להדגיש שרובם לא היו ערבים. אבל, אפילו לאחל רמדאן מוסלמי מובארךּ (רמדאן מבורך) הוא בעייתי. למה יהודי היה תומך או אפילו מסכים לכל דבר המנוגד לתורה? תשובה: כי יהודי כזה לא יודע שזה בעיתי.

לא משנה כמה אני אשמח לזלזל את ההתנועה קונסרבטיבית כביכול, אני לא מבקר בחברים שלה, וגם לא באף אחד מחברי הקהילה הזו.

או שאנשי ההנהלה הפעילו שיקול דעת לקוי או שהתעצלו לבדוק את הקבוצה ודובריה. לעת עתה אני מניח שהאחראי על ביצוע הסכם השכירות לא ידע על הרקע של הקבוצה והדוברים האלה. אם הם כן ידעו עליהם אז המצב יותר גרוע ממה שחשבתי.

עם זאת, אני כן מבקר את הנהגת התנועה הקונסבטיבית. ההשקפה של התנועה לגבי התורה ומערכת החינוך שלה שמאפשרות לאמונת היהודים כאלה בארה"ב להגיע למצב הזה להתבלבל בין יהודות לתרבות עולם המערב. הם טוענים שהם פוסקי דיני הלכה ומדי פעם מודים שהם מפרשים את תורה שבעל פה באופן יצירתי. אבל למעשה, הם פשוט מחפשים דרכים ואמצעים לתת לחברי הקהילות שלהם לעשות את מה שהם רוצים.

למרבה המזל לעם ישראל יש לחברי הקהילה הזו ניצוץ בנשמה.

A central Los Angeles synagogue leased its facility to a Muslim group for the holy month of Ramadan, covering up all posters of Israeli hostages taken by Hamas on October 7 hanging on its walls.

Photos of the covered posters circulated through the local Jewish community, stirring an uproar and prompting an emergency meeting on Tuesday by the synagogue administration after hundreds of members threatened to leave the congregation.

The synagogue reconsidered and canceled the contract with the Muslim organization, after it was also revealed that one of the speakers slated for the event compared Israel's actions in Gaza after October 7 to Nazi Germany.

The Conservative synagogue in Los Angeles, HAMAKOM (formerly Temple Aliyah), which also operates a community center, school and kindergarten, rented out its premises to a local Muslim organization, the Islamic Society of West Valley (ISWV), for a Ramadan event, and ordered the hostages' posters to be covered.

"The fact that they felt the need to hide posters of hostages to make terrorists and their supporters feel more what? Comfortable? says it all. They want to bow down to those who hate us instead of standing up loud and proud in support and defense of Israel," a local community member told Ynet.

Another member said the synagogue's management, "Shoot themselves in the foot. What's happening to our people? When did we reach the point where we need to hide pictures of the captives to respect the Muslim community? And to host Ramadan in the synagogue? How can they explain such a thing?" she wondered.

I can't decide.

• Co-dependence on non-Jews for love and validation?
• General galuth mentality?
• Belief that the Jewish People is a nation like any other on this planet? (ie. globalism)

Of course, I understand the necessity of "getting along" with non-Jews, while remaining in the U. S. (I know so many of you do not want to hear it, but it's called exile.) I myself even had a Muslim friend in college, and Muslim acquaintances. Most were non-Arab. But, even wishing a Muslim Ramadan Mubarak (Blessed Ramadan) is problematic. Why would a Jew ever support or even condone anything which runs counter to Torah? Answer: Because such a Jew does not know any better.

Whatever disdain I have for the so-called Conservative Movement, I am not picking on its members, nor any of the members of this particular house of worship. There are more than a handful of Modern Orthodox and so-called Open Orthodox who have might been put in this same position.

Either the Jews in management exercised poor judgment or were too lazy to vet the the group and its speakers. For now, I will assume that the person in charge of executing the rental agreement did not know of the background of the group and speakers involved and did not go through with it anyway. That would be very bad, indeed.

However, I do criticize the leadership of the Conservative Movement. It is the movement's perspective regarding Torah, and its educational system, which have allowed the mentality of its Jewish members in the U. S. to get this far. The movement's view of the Torah and its educational system that allows the faith of the Jews in the US to reach this state of confusion between Judaism and the culture of the Western world. Pretending to make halakhic (Torah legal) decisions, once in a while admitting to calling them creative interpretations of the Oral Law, when in actuality, they are simply justifications for allowing their congregants to do what they want.

The good news is the outrage expressed here by some of this community's members. Until now, you may have noticed that I have been referring to these Jews as members of a community, rather than a synagogue. But actually, I do not mind the use the word "synagogue" here, since it is a Greek word, Greek as in Hellenist.

And if by chance anyone reading this feels condescended to, then, by all means, prove me wrong, and leave a comment below.

פשוט מאוד. אפשר למצוא לה תפקיד אחרעבורה כי "חשוב יותר" כדי שהיא לא תתבייש ברבים, ושתיראה שהיא שולטת בגורלה.

אין ספק שכבר חושבים על תוכנית כזו, ורק מחפשים את העבודה המתאימה לה. ואז היא תודיע שהיא יכולה לעשות יותר למען ארה״ב בתפקיד החדש הזה.

התפטרות ממעמדותה בגלל סיבות אישיות לא תתליח למפלגה הדמוקרטית. זו סימן לכישלון, כלומר סימן שלחצו אותה להתפטר החוצה. המפלגה הדמוקרטית אם תנסה דבר כזה אז היא תיראה גזענית ונגד נשים.

ואז הסנאטורית מקליפורניה דיאן פיינשטיין (מפלגה דמוקרטית) מתה. מותה מאיץ את המירוץ לסנטור ומשנה את כללי המירוץ.

מושל קליפורניה גאווין ניוסום מינה את לפונזה באטלר בת ה-44 לתפקיד. היא תהיה האשה השחורה היחידה בסנאט, והלהט"ב הראשונה שייצגה את קליפורניה בלשכה. גב' פיינשטיין, פורצת דרך עבור פוליטיקאיות, הייתה הסנאטורית הוותיקה ביותר. לפי החוק הקליפורני, המושל יכול למנות סנטור עד לבחירות הבאות במדינה. גב' באטלר היא האישה השחורה הראשונה שהובילה את רשימת אמילי. לפני שהתחילה את התפקיד ב-2021, היא הייתה יועצת בכירה בקמפיין של סגנית נשיא ארה"ב, קמאלה האריס, במהלך הצעתה לנשיאות ב-2020.

It's really quite simple. Just find her a different, "more important" role for her to fill, so that she can save face, and appear to be in control of her own fate.

Certainly they have already thought of this obviously plan of action, and are just looking for the right job for her to be able to say that she believes she can do more in this new role.

Bowing out due to personal reasons will not cut it, too obvious of a cliché, and sign of failure, ie. being pushed out. The Democratic Party will appear racist and misogynist, if it tried such a thing.

Then California Senator Diane Feinstein died, accellerating the race for her seat, and changing the rules of the race.

Under California law, the governor has the power to appoint a replacement member of congress, when a vacancy occurs mid-term.

Allies of Rep. Barbara Lee are mounting a last-ditch effort to persuade Gov. Gavin Newsom to reverse himself and appoint Lee to the U.S. Senate.

Dianne Feinstein’s death as Lee’s supporters — both outside advocates and members of the Congressional Black Caucus — sought to seize a narrow window of opportunity, arguing Newsom’s public disinclination to pick Lee had sidelined the best-qualified Black woman. This is going to being interesting. Gov. Gavin Newsom has appointed a black woman, Laphonza Butler who hasn't lived in CA for that long, and has never held office, and has been a close advisor to Vice-President Kamala Harris, and whose name was not even mentioned in this Politico article. However, she is the current president of the highly influential EMILY’s List. 

Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Oakland), Rep. Katie Porter (D-Orange County), and Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Los Angeles) all want this position. If Gov. Gavin Newsom goes through with this, all three may challenge Butler in the primary.

California is one of the few states that can have the top two from the same party, ie. Dems run against each other in the Election. What was he thinking? What was his logic? Vice-President Harris influence? Are we seeing the beginning of Newsom's path to the Democratic nomination for president? Has he found a way for Harris to save face, when she leaves the ticket?

Butler is a lesbian, and thus even more politically-correct than Rep. Barbara Lee. Could that be the only reason behind his choice? Does this make Butler vulnerable from being challenged? ...at least by Porter and Schiff?

Gov. Newsom has claimed that he did not want to choose someone who is already a candidate, believing this to be unfair. However, no conditions have been placed on Butler. She could still run for the seat in 2024.

Let's wait and see. And as I have written many times before, U. S. politics is for entertainment purposes only, don't forget to bring the popcorn! 🍿

יום חג הפורים אחרי קריאת מגילת אסתר השניה, אני חשרתי הביתה, התחפשתי ויצאשוב כדי להסתובב וגם לחלק מתנות לאביונים.

שתי המצוות הנוספות של החג הן משלוח מנות לרענו ומקיים משתה (אסתר ט,כב).

במהלך הטיול שלי אני שמעתי מישהו להגיד לי פורים שמח. לא אליי אישית אלא לדמות מוצגת על ידי תחפושת שלי! ולכן אני עצרתי להגיד לו פורים שמח ולשאול אותו מאין הוא ממקור. הוא אמר שהוא יליד הארץ אבל הוא מגיע ללוס אנג׳לס הרבה בשביל העבודה שלו. אנחנו דיברנו קצת. והוא שלוס אנג׳לס הפכה להיות שושן הבירה.

למרות שאני יליד דרום קליפורניה וגרתי שנים בלוס אנג׳לס אני הופתעתי לשמוע את דבר כזה מפני שלוס אנג׳לס כבר מלאת יהודים פרסיים הרבה זמן ומעולם לא חשבתי על ההשוואה הזו לעיר הבירה של אימפריית פרס העתיקה.

במהלך השיחה שלנו אני סיפרתי לו שלפי הנסיון שלי קהילת יהודים פרסיים שבלוס אנגג׳לס ידועה כמלאת עובדים קשה והרבה מאיתם הגיעו לארה״ב כמעט בלי כלום כי ברחו מפרס בזמן המהפכה האיסלמית של איראן ונפילת השאח. היהודי היקר הזה הדגיש לי כוונתו להגיד את שם הכינוי שושן בכלל לא שלילית. אלא כדי להדגיש שהיהודים האלה צריכים ללצאת משם. אני אמרתי לו כמובן אני מסכים שיהודים צריכים לצאת משם ומכל מקום חוץ לארץ.

סיימנו את השיחה והתחלתי בדרך הביתה. ואז אני גם התחלתי לחשוב על חלק הראשון של משקראנו בבוקר:

לא פעם הצעתי שהאתגרים הגדולים ביותר של היהודים המגורים בגלות הנוכחית של אדום (עשיו / רומא / עולם המערב) המונעים אותם מלעלות ארצה הם העושר והתרבות החומרנית שם. כשהידיד הדש שלי הזכיר לי על מה שמפורסם על לוס אנג'לס שהחומרניות חשובה לה מאוד, ובמיוחד בבוורלי הילס, המיקום המועדף לגור של יהודים פרסיים, הבנת הרעיון הזה התחזקה לי.

למרות שיהודים פרסיים כנראה התרשמו מעושרו של המלך אחשוורוש, לא היו להם האפשרות והיכולת לצאת את גלותם ולעלות לארץ ישראל בכל מקרה, בדיוק כמו היהודים של היום התקועים בפרס הנוכחי (איראן). התהליך של עזיבת בריחת יהודים את מאיראן הוא כמעט בלתי אפשרי. יצירת קשר עם הסוכנות קשה מאוד. וצריכים ליצור קשר איתה באמצעות התכתבות עם יהודים המתגוררים במדינוה מוסלמית כגון טורקיה. יצירת קשר עם הסוכנות היהודית או כל גורם במערב גורמת ישירות למעצר בגין ריגול ובגידה.

אבל יש לרוב יהודים פרסיים בלוס אנג'לס, או בגרייט נק, ניו יורק, או במקומות אחרות בארה"ב, הכסף והחופש לצאת משושן ולעלות ארצה. ואולי זאת הבעיה שהיהודים האלה כן יכולים לצאת, אך לדעתם אין להם שום סיבה לצאת. חבל.

כמו הרבה יהודים אחרים המתגוררים בעולם המערב,גם הרבה יהודים פרסיים שכחו שלמרות כל ההצלחה החומרנית היהודים משיגים בגלות, למעשה הגלות היא עונש.

Esser Agaroth (2¢):

Purim morning after the second reading of Megillath (Scroll of) Esther, I came home, changed into costume, and went out to give matanoth la'evyonim (gifts to the needy). 

The two additional mitzvoth (commandments) for Jews to perform on Purim include sending portions of food to friends and making a festive meal (Esther 9:22).

While on my walk, I heard someone wish me, or rather the character I was portraying, a Happy Purim,... in English. So instead of saying the same and continuing on, I stopped and I asked where this man was from. He said he was native Israel, but spent a lot of him time in Los Angeles. We chatted for a while, and made the comment that Los Angeles has turned into a "Shushan HaBirah."

As a native of Southern California, and having lived in Los Angeles, I surprised by this comment, because 1) Los Angeles has always had a very large Persian Jewish population. And 2) I had never thought of referring to Los Angeles as Shushan, the name of the ancient capital of the Persian empire, which is well-known to Jews.

During our very pleasant chat, I related my experience to him of the Los Angeles, Persian Jewish community, know for being very hard workers, and many of whom arrived in the U. S. without much to speak of, having fled Iran during its Islamic Revolution, and fall of the Shah. This Jew reassured me that he was not making any slight at all toward Persian Jews, simply suggesting that they needed to leave. Of course, I agreed that Jews needed to leave Shushan, as well as all other cities in the golah (exile). 

We finished our chat, and went our separate ways. Then I started to reflect on first part of what I had heard read that morning:

1 Now it came to pass in the days of Ahasuerus--this is Ahasuerus who reigned, from India even unto Ethiopia, over a hundred and seven and twenty provinces-- 2 that in those days, when the king Ahasuerus sat on the throne of his kingdom, which was in Shushan the capital, 3 in the third year of his reign, he made a feast unto all his princes and his servants; the army of Persia and Media, the nobles and princes of the provinces, being before him; 4 when he showed the riches of his glorious kingdom and the honor of his excellent majesty, many days, even a hundred and fourscore days. 5 And when these days were fulfilled, the king made a feast unto all the people that were present in Shushan the capital, both great and small, seven days, in the court of the garden of the king's palace; 6 there were hangings of white, fine cotton, and blue, bordered with cords of fine linen and purple, upon silver rods and pillars of marble; the couches were of gold and silver, upon a pavement of green, and white, and shell, and onyx marble. 7 And they gave them drink in vessels of gold--the vessels being diverse one from another--and royal wine in abundance, according to the bounty of the king. 8 And the drinking was according to the law; none did compel; for so the king had appointed to all the officers of his house, that they should do according to every man's pleasure. (Esther 1:1:8)

I have often suggested that the greatest challenges of the Jews residing in Edom (Esau / Rome / the West) preventing them from leaving for Israel are the riches and materialistic culture ingrained in them. The reminder of the material focus for which Los Angeles is stereotypically known, and in particular Beverly Hills, favored by Persian Jews, simply hammered this notion home.

Although the Jews of Persia were enamored by King Ahasuerus's riches, they did not possess any power to leave their exile and return to Israel anyway, just like the current Jews stuck in modern day Persia, Iran. The process for Jews to leave Iran is almost impossible. Contacting the Jewish Embassy is often the first step, but must be done by corresponding through Jews residing in Muslim countries, such as Turkey. Contacting the Jewish Agency or anyone in the West directly carries the risk of arrest for espionage and treason.

However, most of the Persian Jews in Los Angeles, or Great Neck, NY, or else in the U. S. do have the resources and the freedom to leave Shushan, as it were. But maybe that's the problem. They can leave, but do not see any reason to leave.

Just like so many other Jews residing in the West, perhaps they have forgotten that, despite all of the material success Jews have achieved while in exile, the exile is, in fact, a punishment.

משחקי בחירות אמריקאות / American Election Shenanigans

כ"ד לחודש השמיני תשפ״א

לקראת הבחירות בארה״ב כמה מדינות שלחו פתקי הצבעה אוטומטית לכל שרשום להצביע. מדינת קליפורניה, המדינה שבה אני רשום, היא אחת המדינות המבצעות את זה. בתמונה אפשר לראות את מה שאני קיבלתי ישיר לת. ד. שלי בירושלים.

"אז מה?" אתם שואלים. אני קיבלתי את פתקי הקלפי אפילו שאני מגר בארץ. איזה מגניב!
לא. זה לא מגניב. אני לא זכאי להצביע. אני לא אזרח ארה״ב!

וכנרא אני לא היחיד שקיבל פתקי הצבעה שלא זכאי להצביע. כבר מדברים בתקשורת על הנפטרים שהצביעו, על פתקי הקלפי הנזרקו לאשפה, ועל מניעת הפקחים הרפובליקנים מלהכנס לחדרי ספירת הפתקים.

אכן "טעויות" קיימות בבחירות מדינת ישראל כמו החלפת פתקים בקלפי לפתקים פסולים והקולות שאיזה מפלגה ערבית קיבלה מתושבי ישוב איתמר שבשומרון. מתנחלים מצביעים למפלגה ערבית? באמת? ומי יודע אם הטעויות בבחירות שלנו הן באמת טעויות? (מי שמבין יבין.)

אבל מה שקורה עכשיו בארה"ב, סמל הדמוקרטיה הכי גדול בעולם, פשוט לא יאומן!

אאז למה אני קיבלתי פתקי הצבעה? מפני שאני רשום כחבר מפלגה הדמוקרטית? או פשוט מפני שמשרד המדינה (המתעסק בעניינים פניים) לא הודיעה למדינת קליפורניה אל ביטול האזרחות שלי?

אין לי מושג. אני פשוט משתף לכם את עדות הראיה האישית שלי לגבי המשחקים ואפילו מעשי פלילי אפשריים המתקיימים בבחירות אמריקאות.

In the run-up to the very recent U. S. elections, several states automatically sent out "Vote by Mail" ballots to all those registered to vote. The state of California, where I was registered to vote, is one of those states which does this. The graphic (above) shows what I received directly to my post office box in Jerusalem.

The red circles list the candidates for president and vice-president (right) accompanied by the following explanation (left):

"All registered voters in L. A. County have been mailed a Vote by Mail ballot to ensure a safe and accessible voting option. "

"So what?" You ask. I got my ballot even though I live outside of the U. S. Cool!

No. Not cool. I'm not entitled to vote. I'm not a citizen!

And I'm probably not the only ineligible person who received a ballot. There has already been talk in the news about the deceased voting, the ballots being dumped in the trash, and Republican poll monitors being prevented from entering the rooms where ballots were being counted.

Indeed, we have "mistakes" in our elections here in the State of Israel, such as balloting notes being surreptitiously replaced with fake ballots and the votes that  received from the residents of the Itamar settlement in the Shomron (Samaria) reportedly casting several votes for an Arab party  Settlers voting for a Arab party? Really? And who knows if these "mistakes" are actually mistakes?

But what is happening now in the United States, the greatest symbol of democracy in the world, is simply unbelievable!

So why did I get a "Vote by Mail" ballot? Because I'm registered as a member of the Democratic Party? Or simply because the State Department has not notified the State of California of my renouncement of citizenship?

I have no idea. I am simply sharing my own person evidence of shenanigans, if not criminal acts, taking place in the American elections.

יהודים באמריקה, תתעוררו כבר! / American Jews, Wake Up Already!

ט' לחודש השלישי תש"פ

אני לא איכנס לעניינים של המהומות הקשורות למותו של ג'ורג 'פלויד על ידי שוטר משטרה. כל הבלגן הזה מתקיים בארה״ב. וארה״ב היא לא ארצנו, אלה מקום המגורים הזמנים שלנו עד שנוכל לכבוש את מולדת האמיתית של עם ישראל. ואני מדגיש שאני כותב כאן ארץ ולא מדינה.

כן. מאז ומתמיד היהודים בחזית למען צדק החברתי אמיתי, בדגש על המילה אמיתי. וכן, הגיוני שיהודים מתעסקים בצדק חברתי בגולה במשך תקופת התגוררות שם.

אבל, למה יהודים עדיין מתגוררים בגולה? ודוקא כשהם כבר לא צריכים?

צֶדֶק צֶדֶק, תִּרְדֹּף... (דברים יט,כ)

חבל שהרבה יהודים התקועים בארה״ב ובמדינות הגוים האחרות, גם באופן פיזי וגם באופן רוחני , בכוונה או לא בכוונה, לא מתיחסים לשאר הפסוק:

My mother grew up in the Fairfax District.

I am not even going to comment on the details of the protests riots related to the death of George Floyd. It's the United States. It's not our country, only our temporary dwelling place until we can reclaim the only true homeland of the Jewish People. I would like to emphasize that I wrote Land here, and not State.

Yes. Jews have always been in the forefront of real, social justice protests, emphasis on the word real. And yes, it makes sense for Jews to be involved with social justice in foreign lands, as long as they reside there.

But, why are Jews still residing in foreign lands, when they no longer have to?

I have mentioned countless times on this blog, there is a strong connection between justice and residing in the Land of Israel.

Of course, many Jews comfortably entrenched in the U. S. and else, intentionally or unintentionally, leave out the rest of the verse:

Some Jews Others are just armchair Zionists. Many Left-wing Jews are simply the victims of being led astray, and can probably be considered tinoq shenishba (like captured Jewish children raised by non-Jews). As condescending as that that sounds, it's the truth. And we all know that the truth can hurt.

There are Jews who complain about the Israeli Government, its shenanigans, and how difficult it can make it for real Torah observant, Zionist Jews (whether they realize it or not). My message to them is: Why not come and help us, who are on the frontlines by the way, to change things?

Then, of course, there are many non-Jews who have been fooled brainwashed into believing that they are Jews, either through fake conversions of their mothers, themselves, or being lied to that that need not convert at all. I almost feel sorry for these people. Almost. Although many of them have been duped by Jews. Even most of these Jews, daring to call themselves "rabbis," are just pawns of the Erev Rav leadership from the various quasi-Jewish "movements."

But, I digress...

Why are Jews so surprised that they are getting blamed, and attacked physically, for a non-Jewish police officer's involvement in the death of an African-American man?

This just happened not even 30 years ago! See the map (right). The Rodney King riots reached Beverly Hills. The Pico-Robertson District is just south of Beverly Hills, and there are plenty of Jews between Beverly Hills and eastward town Downtown, such in Fairfax District, Miracle Mile, Hancock Park.

And now, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, and Culver City all have curfews imposed.

The police were not successful in protecting Jewish property. Do you really think they won't eventually fail in protecting your lives?

Maybe it's time to stop repeating the same mistakes over again, expecting different results.

Maybe it's time to read the writing on the wall, and get come home while you still can. How flights to Israel now are there anyway, due to the whole Corona situation? Could you even come to Israel right now if you wanted to?

Our tradition states that only 20% made it out of Egypt. How many will make it out this time, out of Edom (Rome / The West)?

As you might have guessed, I definitely have some things to say about this incident.

First, what's a Palestinian? See Pseudostinians for the origin story of this group [of groups] of Arabs.

Second, even when we team up with non-Jews, it often backfires. And when it doesn't, the concept that Jews are a distinct and separate people goes out the window. Often, the non-Jews end up blaming the Jews, and think better of teaming up with us in the future.

This panel was based on the rights and lands of indigenous peoples. I have already debunked the notion that Jews are indigenous to the Land of Israel (See Debunking the Indigenous Argument.) We are not indigenous. Even if we were, the only concern we should have is what The Almighty wants.

There were times when he did not want us living in the Land of Israel. Now, it is quite clear to me that he does, having performed miracles for us, upon our deciding to performance of the mitzvah (commandment) of conquering the Land. We have not completed the second half of that mitzvah. But, that is another post for another time. In short, the entire Land of Israel was promised to the People of Israel, and only to the People of Israel, by The Holy One, Blessed Be He, and to remove from the Land certain elements. (See Num. 33:50-56; Deut. 7:1-6; Mishneh Torah: Laws of Avodah Zarah and Goyim 10, Laws of Kings and the Wars)

On one hand, it saddens me that this is the state of my alma mater. On the other, why should I care about my previous life in galosh (exile). The message in this video is loud and clear. Unfortunately, Jews' attitude of connection, identification, and loyalty to their countries of residence, that they view Aliyah as giving up and running away. The truth is that these countries outside of the Land of Israel are only supposed to be temporary dwelling places, not permanent homelands.

Our tradition states that 80% of our population remained in Egypt, only 20% making it out into the Sinai Desert.

When I was studying at UCLA in the '80's, during the anti-Apartheid protests and BDS against South Africa, the phrase "Zionist = Racism" showed up on the outside of the door of the Black Students' Union. There was debate and discussion over this phrase, whether it was true or not, and whether the Black Students Union (That's what they called it back then) had protected freedom of speech to display such a phrase publicly.

The natural progression leading up to the violence at this panel began long ago.

The only question now is how long will it take my fellow Bruins, and all of my fellow Jews to wake up, see the writing on the wall, and get on the plane already.

Why Jews Should Come to Live in Israel?

On Shabbat, there was a terrorist attack at a Chabbad of Poway, northeast of the City of San Diego, CA.

Some Jews are writing about this be evidence of the need to "come home."

They're not wrong. We can either do this the easy(er) way, or the hard(er) way. We can get on the plane, or we can continue making excuses about our children being at the wrong age to move, or needing to finish an internship or one more year of work for a better pension, and waiting around for more of the proverbial kicks in the pants Jew hating terror attacks, before finally coming to Israel.

It's not about "coming home" to be safe. Look at all the terror attacks here in Israel? It's about Jews needing to wake up to realize that the U. S. (and other countries) are only supposed to be temporary dwelling places.

It's about Israel not just being the place in history where you learn for a year or do IDF service then heed your parents' calls to stop being silly and come home to get your degree (piece of paper).

It's about Israel being the proper place to invest our energies, and not just a place where to throw our money at it to ease our guilt, and pretend that we're doing our part.

It's about time to stop being an "armchair Zionist," and becoming a real one, some who doesn't just put his money where his mouth is, but puts his entire body, mind, and soul in along with his money.

U. S. Voting Rights for Non-Citizens

Let me first remind all of you of what I have stated several times in the past: American elections are for entertainment purposes only.

That being said, this post will be short and sweet.

The short answer to the question is, of course...

There aren't any voting right for non-citizens, nor should there be.

It boggles the mind that there is even a drop of consideration for this by the average American citizen on the street. At least those globalists, who are "out" about their opinions and objectives, have an excuse, albeit a cockamamie one.

Do Americans have the right to vote in Canadian or Mexican elections?

Does and American registered to vote in Los Angeles County have the right to vote in San Diego County? Or in East Coast terms, should an American from New Jersey be allowed to vote in elections in New York City or Philadelphia?

No. Of course, not. This should be so obvious that I must assume it has already been mentioned countless times in American news and social mass media, which I mostly ignore.

So, how else can the U. S. government protect its elections from infiltration?

I have no idea. Not my problem.

It's the problem of Americans, and I am no longer an American citizen.
However, I will engage in some speculation, as a segue into something which I find to be much more important, Jews living in Israel.

I hardly like the idea of yet another piece of identification forced upon the populace. But, in the U. S. the photo-less Social Security Card won't cut it, and not everyone has a driver's license, nor do all non-drivers have a state identification card.

Here in Israel, we already have personal identity cards, so we're already use to it indoctrinated. Until not so long ago, our identity cards even included "nationality," ie. Jewish, Druze, Arab, and would have included the recently made up [neo-]Aramaen nationality as well. Nationality was removed as the Minister of the Interior at the time, Eli Yishai, an act of damage control, in response to the Israeli Supreme Court's acceptance of quasi-conversions for the purposes of determining nationality.

But, I digress...

Now we have biometric identity cards being phased in, under the guise of being "voluntary," initially voluntary that is, and "more convenient." More convenient for the Israeli Government to track us, that is. But, we're not allowed to talk about that. Apparently, our countrywide Rav Kav (transit card) doesn't quite cut it, when it comes to tracking our movements. Damn those anonymous Rav Kav's! And they aren't exactly even anonymous either.

But, I digress...

The real issue taking place in the U. S. has nothing to do with who can or cannot vote.

Oh sure, there is the illusion of an adversarial "nationalist vs. globalist" relationship being played out out by the Republicans and Democrats, with the masses stuck someplace in the middle. But, regardless of how the minions of their minions present themselves, the powers that be all want the same thing, control. And new and improved tracking is just a means to an end.

My mother, who is a native [Los] Angelina once told me that is it against the law to honk your horn in the the City of Beverly Hills (located within Los Angeles County), since it would disturb this city's high class residents.  Years later, she said it was a joke she had heard as a child, teasing those who lived in Beverly Hills. My aunt, her sister, had told me she had heard the same joke.

And so, I was surprised to see this sign in a Tel-Aviv suburb. I have never seen such a thing in Israel.

Unanswered Questions about the Terror Threat on Three Los Angeles Synagogues

Three Los Angeles synagogue campuses were shut down following a series of online bomb threats, disrupting normally scheduled Shabbat activities on June 10.

The Glazer and Irmas campuses of Wilshire Boulevard Temple as well as University Synagogue in Brentwood were closed shortly after 8 a.m., according to Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Officer Mike Lopez. By about 12:45 p.m., LAPD cleared all locations to reopen.

“K9 units responded to the locations to make sure to render all locations safe,” Lopez said. “At this time we have no credible threats.”

Rabbi Morley T. Feinstein of University Synagogue said a staff member “found an email that was beyond nasty — horrific language, and threatening” in a temple email account and its executive director, Lisabeth Lobenthal, called the police. (cont.)

I don't really want to be the one,...but I'm going to be the one who asks this first question.

1. Did anyone else notice that none of these threatened "Jewish" institutions were Torah observant? Rather, they are Reform institutions.

2. Would they have not known of the threat if no one had checked synagogue email accounts on Shabboth aside? (Something which is forbidden by the way -- A-hem!)

3. Does this mean that the one threatening these synagogues knew that they were not Torah observant, and so would check email on Shabboth?

4. If this were a Muslim terror threat, wouldn't the Muslim go after Jewish communities more ideologically aligned with policies of the current Israeli Government? Or perhaps the Muslim didn't do his homework?

5. The irony here is that if a Muslim, or anyone, wanted to kill as many Jews as possible (God forbid!), then these communities were very poor choices, indeed. Because of the sham "conversions," and rampant intermarriage, just exactly how many members of these communities are actually Jewish?

6. Or, perhaps, the Muslim did do his homework, knew that email would be checked on Shabboth, and while many members were on site, and that it is the members of these communities who wield the real power?

7. If this were a Muslim terror threat, wouldn't this serve to support the notion -- that everyone in Israel except the Left knows -- Muslim terrorists do not like leftist Jews anymore than they like those demonized as "right-wing extremists/religious fanatics?"

In fact, I have on occasion have an Arab tell me that they know that the "extremists" about the Land and their ideology. (Yes, I have actually met and worked with Arabs in my life, unlike most limousine liberals.)

But, I digress...

How much do you wanna bet that this was perpetrated but a nut, a disgruntled, former member?

False flag threat to gain sympathy? Nah. At least I hope that the Reform leaders would be a lot more creative if they were to have planned such an event.

And to those of you Jews who are legitimately on a spiritual search, and maybe have had it with the so-called "Orthodox," here are some suggestions.

If any rabbi cannot answer your questions, is afraid to say he doesn't know, but he can check for you, move on to the next candidate.

If he tells you because the Torah says so, ask him to explain to you how that is and where he derives this from. If cannot answer, unwilling to take the time to check, or worse, move on.

But, when you find someone with whom you can relate, even if he provides you with answers which you not necessarily like (eg. why you can't eat authentic pepperoni pizza or why you can't drive to the beach on Shabboth), be open-minded (you know, like the left is always claiming they are), and keep listening. Don't worry, you can keep shopping around.

But, just remember, we are here on this earth not to do what "feels" good or right; we are here on this earth to do what IS good or right,...which does not always feel good.

The Oscars Are Upon Us. So What?

Asher, thanks for pointing out how star struck and materialistic we can be, and that we sometimes worship what we shouldn't be worshiping. At least that's what I got from your comic.

And, unfortunately, I cannot disagree with you.

Even more so, as a native Southern Californian, and one time very materialistic Southern Californian at that, I learned early on how tacky it was to treat celebrities as being on a higher level than everyone else.

We laughed at the tourists, and immigrants from suburbs, and yes, even those from New York City, who did.

It was even tackier to name drop. Anyone who said that he had just met a celebrity, either saw said celebrity in concert, on a talk show with a few hundred other star struck fans, or was simply lying. (Cocaine can do that, you know.) Even referring to celebrities by first name was at best borderline, but really to be avoided.

Instead, we would hint...

Remember that time in '85 in Nichols Canyon when the cops were called?

Or

Why weren't you at the Santa Monica party last night? (The one which had been in the news.)

*"The Santa Monica party" means that there was, after all, only one party of many in Santa Monica that night, which was worth mentioning.

If you didn't get it, then you were irrelevant. If you did get it, then you were probably just pretending that you got it anyway, and were irrelevant, unless you could be of use somehow.

You see, if we put celebrities on a pedestal, then we could never aspire to hang out with them, unless we were lucky enough to become one of the select few groupies, which we would never deign to become.

Mentioning street names and corners instead of cities or neighborhood names really threw people off, and was a sure way to weed out the tourists from the natives.

As a San Diegeño, I was quickly accepted into the fold upon moving to Los Angeles, since Angelinos, and everyone else in the U. S. and around the world, consider all of Southern California to be part of Greater Los Angeles anyway. I just made sure never to be seen rolling my eyes, every time this fallacy happened to be mentioned in conversation.

If you guessed that we were snobs, then you guessed correctly.

But, once you got to know us, and you accepted your place in the greater scheme of things,...beneath us, then you realized just how nice we really were.

If you guessed that we were condescending as well as snobs, then you guessed correctly again.

Seriously, though, Angelinos get a bad rap. They are really quite nice, just annoyed when others,...outsiders that is,...pretended that they're natives.

These individuals were simply not tolerated. But, everyone else was treated very nicely and with those friendly smiles, which everyone always thought were pasted on fakes, but really weren't,...most of the time.

Actually, you know who the nicest Angelinos are? The celebrities themselves. Every celebrity I have met (notice no name dropping?) has been super nice, and genuinely so. I was most impressed with the Oscar nominee standing in back of me in line to get into a club. Why didn't she just go right in? Surely, she would have been recognized. I took the opportunity to turn around casually to smile and say "Hi," which is code for "I'm on the same level as you. Wanna hang out?"

The answer was "no." But, I guess you get the point.

Our priorities were messed up. At least mine were. I had even been exposed to Torah observance as a kid, and even liked it.

Fortunately for me, these messed up priorities were just a phase.

I mean, who cares about who I knew and which clubs I was able to get into? (This was the beginning of the "selectors" in LA. OK. So, we stole the idea from New York,...I think. So, what?)

Or for that matter, who wins the Oscars?

Sure, I do watch movies, and the Oscars can be a helpful guide as to what to watch,...albeit less and less, and that was even before it became overrun by the ultra-Left-wing political agenda.

But, still, how will the results of the Oscars affect the universe?

Not at all.

On My 18th Aliyah Anniversary, Here's My Story!

Coming up on my 18th anniversary of not only making aliyah, but arriving in Israel for the first in my life, I realized, thanks to Tomer Devorah, that I had never written about my personal aliyah story. Even though I have written tips on aliyah, before, during, and after, based on personal experience.

Eighteen years ago today, I landed at Ben-Gurion International Airport for the first in my life, and I stayed.

My flight took off from Los Angeles, where I was living for the last nine months of my life in the U. S. There was an hour stopover in Chicago, and then it was onto Israel. When we took off from Chicago, my thought was, "This is it!"

Periodically glancing at the real time, flight map at the front of the cabin, I saw when we were over international waters, and then past the half-way point of crossing the Atlantic Ocean. There was no turning back now. But, the truth was, I knew that I was never going back, at not permanently, and I never have. In fact, I only left for a two-week course in England, in 1998. That means I have not left Israel in 17 years. For years, I either did not have the money, or I did not have the time off from work. Now, I do not have any interest in leaving Israel at all.

My journey to Israel, however, actually began years before I actually landed here.

You see, I had already tried to come to Israel several times beforehand.

In 1985, I wanted to come for my junior year of study abroad. In 1994, I tried coming for a year of study in yeshivah. In both of these cases, I did not have the money to go. Remember that Birthright did not exist back then. Even though it is just over 10 years old, many Jews do not realize that it is...just over 10 years old.

In 1996, I visited with the shali'ah (State representative) in Los Angeles to "apply" for aliyah.

Taking his suggestion, I wrote several options as to what I would actually be doing Israel, to show how open and flexible I was. I wrote IDF service, yeshivah, ulpan (intensive Hebrew study) and work. I had already wrote to the Ministries of Health and Education to get my professional degrees and certifications recognized, and was in contact with the Israeli branch of my professional association.

But, in the end I was "rejected," for not being focused. Of course, the facts that I had never even visited Israel, nor knew anyone here, worked against me. But, what no one ever told me explicitly was that my only loss would be a paid flight, and help with a place to stay.

Finally, in 1997 everything fell in place very quickly. I believe very strongly that I was meant to come at this time, and not before.

A friend of mine found an ad for a teachers program in Israel, co-sponsored by the LA Federation, the City of Tel-Aviv, and the Jewish Agency. In April, 1997, I interviewed for the program, and was accepted. I was told not to worry about money. This program really took care of me. So, I must give credit where credit is due.

In June, I found a cheap, one-way ticket, from someone with whom I volunteered a couple times a month, who turned out to be a travel agent.

Only a week before I was to fly, I lost my passport. But, I was able to get a new one, with special, yet pricey, three-day service, and a cool boss who let me come into work late a couple of times, so that I could deal with this.

Although Nefesh b'Nefesh did not exist back then, and handouts of chunks of money had been cancelled, at least for Americans, and other olim (immigrants) from Western countries, I managed. The shali'ah in Los Angeles had told me that I should bring at least $11,000. with me, as a single person. Yeah, right! As if!

I stepped off the plane with just $300 in my pocket, a duffel bag, and one carry on bag. Of course, I had a job and a place to live lined up. Like I said, everything just fell into place. I might even say miraculously so.

I even had a place to stay in a merkaz qelitah (absorption center) for two years, which is unusual. Most olim do not even receive more than a year. Rent was only about $86. per month, as I distinctly remember that the rate of exchange was 3.5 sheqqels to a dollar back then.

I soon obtained a student visa, good for a year. Just over a year later, a came back to the Ministry of the Interior at 6:30am, yet I was still only 13th in line. Hours later, I met the same clerk who had given me my student visa. I brought my birth certificate, passport, and letter from my rabbi in San Diego, stating that I was Jewish. I had heard it recommended to bring in your mother's kethubbah (marriage contract) as well, but I did not, as I did not have access to it.

The clerk glanced over everything, but took only the letter and stamped my U. S. passport with my request, and told me to come back in 30 days. I did, and he gave me my te'udath zehuth (identity card), stood up, shook my hand, and said Mazal Tov.

One tip I discovered about the process, which I feel is important to share is that each rabbinical association has its own list at the Jewish Agency of recognized rabbis. The application is sent there for confirmation of ones Jewish status. I called the Jewish Agency in advance of my submission of documents at the Ministry of the Interior. When I mentioned the name of the rabbi who had signed my letter, I was told that his name was absent from the list.

I almost started to freak-out. But, then a thought came to me.... I asked the person on the phone which list she had checked. She said the Orthodox Union [OU] list. Then I asked if Young Israel had its own list. She said yes, and sure enough, found the name of my rabbi on this list. I made a point of telling this to the Interior Ministry clerk, just in case.

I believe this insured that everything went as smoothly as it did. So, check to make sure that your rabbi is listed. I believe that Chabba"d also has its own list.

Almost a year and a half ago, I renounced my U. S. citizenship. I know that this is not the choice for everyone. You can read about my experiences with this, including how the process works, and about reporting ones income, and assets, or lack thereof, for the final time to the IRS.

After living in Tel-Aviv for two years, I moved around. Jerusalem, Beth-El, Ofra, and eventually to K'far Tapu'ah for five years. For the past six years I have been back in Jerusalem.

I have been homeless in Israel, in debt, unemployed, and survived a suicide bombing. I have interviewed, worked, learned, lived, and dealt with government offices. I have job hunted, apartment hunted, friend hunted, and community hunted. It has not been easy. We are even warned in the Talmud that it is not easy. But, this is home, and it is where all Jews belong, not in the U. S.
