עשר אגורות (2¢):
להתפלל למען המדינה? למה להתפלל למען מדינה המבטלת מצוות?

...ואין צריך לומר אם גזר המלך לבטל מצוה, שאין שומעין לו. (משנה תורה, הל׳ מלכים ומלחמותיהם ג,י [ט])

הרב מאיר כהנא הי"ד היה מצטט את ההלכה הזו בנאומיו בכנסת. אין צריך לומר שהרבה ח״כים לא אהבו לשמוע את דבר כזה אפילו ח״כים שומרי תורה ומצוות של המפד״ל. פעולה כזו הפחיתה את המקובלות שלו בקרב ח״כים האחרים.

במיוחד זה הרגיז את כל מי שטוען שהכנסת ממלאת מקומו של המלך. האם נכון שממלא מקום רק זמני, ולא מחליף קבוע? בכל מקרה, אם אין שומעים במלך שגזר לבטל מצוה, אז קל וחומר, אין שומעים בממלא מקום של מלך, נכון?

רבנים ציטטו את ההלכה הזו גם בהצדקת סירוב פקודות צה"ל הסותרות את התורה, ובמיוחד במהלך תוכנית ההתנתקות של גירוש יהודים על ידי רה״מ דאז אריאל שרון [ושמעון פרס]  מעזה וצפון השומרון בשתס"ה/2005. (*גוש קטיף הוא רק חלק של עזה.)

בנוסף, האם התפילה להגנת המדינה סותרת את תפילותינו שלוש פעמים ביום להקמת ממלכת דוד מחדש? תוך כדי תפילה לביאת המשיח ״...את צמח דוד...״, האם אנו מתפללים לנפילת המדינה? או אנו מתפללים להחלפתו? או לאירגונתה מחדש? אפילו בתפילה הממלכתית עצמה (לעיל) כתוב שהמדינה היא "ראשית צמיחת גאולתנו". אני שם דגש במילה ראשית. האם הרבנים המעודדים לנו להתפלל למען המדינה באמת מאמינים שהמדינה תמשיך להתקיים עם מלכות בית דוד?

למה הרבנים הממלכתיים מפחדים מלהזכיר את מה שכתוב במפורש בתורה או שנמסר לנו בעל פה? כי בסיס השליטה שלהם יהיה מאוים כהשלכה? כי הם מאמינים שהם יכולים לפעול למעל ישראל ביעילות יותר באמצעות שמירה על שתיקה, ואז שמירה את קשר חיובי לממשלה החילונית? כי הם כל כך תלויים בקהילה הבינלאומית שהם מפחדים לעצבן אותה?

למה רבנים אחרים ביצהר ובמקומות אחרים מאוימים, ואף נעצרים, על ידי המשטרה, על כך שהעזו ללמד נושאים שאינם מקובלים על ידי הממשלה, אפילו שהם מלמדים אותם אך ורק תיאורטי?

להתפלל שמנהיגינו יחזרו בתשובה ושהקב"ה יתן להם את חוכמה וידע כדי לעשות את רצונו? כֵּן.

להתפלל שהקב"ה יביא לנו מנהיגים יראי שמים ביאת המשיח? כֵּן.

אבל להתפלל למען מדינה, שחלק גדול מממשלתה רוצה שנהיה אומה, כמו כל אומה אחרת, כלומר להטמע בתוך קהילה עולמית לא יהודי? לֹא.

אז בפעם הבאה שתראו יהודים מניפים את דגלים שכתוב בם "עם ישראל ותורת ישראל בארץ ישראל", זכרו שאי אפשר להשוות את מדינת ישראל לשלושת העניינים אלו, למרות שכוחות השלטון ממשיכים להשתדל לשכנע אותנו לנו להאמין שכן.

"Our Father who is in Heaven, the Rock of Israel and its Redeemer, Bless the State of Israel, the beginning of our Redemption, protect it under the wings of Your loving kindness, and spread over it a tabernacle of your Peace.

Esser Agaroth (2¢):
Pray for the State? Why pray for a State the abolishes mitzvoth (Torah commandments)? 

...and one does not need to say, when a King decrees canceling a mitzvah, that one does not heed him. (Mishneh Torah, Laws of Kings and their Wars 3:10 [9])

Rabbi Meir Kahane hy"d would cite this very halakhah (Torah Law) in Knesset (Israeli Parliament). Needless to say, this added to his unpopularity among other MKs, including from the so-called National "Religious" Party.

This especially upset those who have claimed that the Knesset is a stand-in for the King. Isn't a stand-in only supposed to be temporary, and not a permanent replacement? In any event, if we are not to heed a king who decrees the cancelation of a mitzvah, then even more so, should we also not heed any stand-in for a king?

This halakhah was also cited in justification of IDF soldiers refusing orders which contradicted the Torah, especially during Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's [and Shimon Peres's] Disengagement Plan Expulsion of Jews from Gaza (including Gush Qatif) and northern Samaria in שתס״ה/2005.

Besides, doesn't praying for the welfare of the State contradict our three times daily prayers for the re-establishment of the Kingdom of David? While praying for the coming of the Mashi'ah ...את צמח דוד, are we not praying for the State's downfall? Praying for its replacement? For its restructuring?

Even the mamlakhti (Statist) prayer itself (above) says that the State is "the beginning of our Redemption." Do they really believe the State will somehow exist as is, side by side with a re-established Kingdom of David?

Why are mamlakhti rabbis afraid to mention what is written in the Torah, and handed down to us from generation in our Oral Law? Because their power base would be threatened? Because they believe they are able to do more good by keeping quiet, and maintaining a positive connection to the secular government? Because they are so dependent on the international, ie. non-Jewish, community, they are afraid to rub them the wrong way?

Why are other rabbis in Yitzhar and elsewhere threatened, and even detained, by police, for daring to teach such politically-incorrect topics, even theoretically?

Pray for The Almighty to grant our leaders wisdom and knowledge to repent, and to do what is right? Yes. Bring us God-fearing leaders,  in the interim until Mashi'ah come,? Yes.

But pray for State, much of whose government desires for us to be a nation, like any other nation, ie. like any other non-Jewish nation? No.

So, the next time you see Jews waving their proverbial flags of "the People of Israel and the Torah of Israel in the Land of Israel," remember that the State of Israel cannot be equated with these three, try as the Powers That Be may, to make us believe that it is.

בעיני האו״ם אין נפגעי טרור ישראליים / In the Eyes of the United Nations, Israeli Terror Victims Do Not Exist

"On his last day in office, the outgoing Israeli ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, recorded a video in which he strongly criticized the ignoring of the victims of the massacre." (YNET) What about Munich Olympics, 1972? The video is in Hebrew with English subtitles.

In the second video, which is in Hebrew, Amb. Erdan affixes a mezuzah to the new offices of the incoming Israeli ambassador to the United Nations. The mezuzah case is in the shape of the entire land of Israel, Judea, Samaria, Gaza, and the Golan Heights. It was donated by the Judea and Samaria Council. As usual, Southern Lebanon, which comprises the norther sections of the territories of the Tribes of Asher and Naphtali have been excluded.

Amb. Gilad Erdan: "Tomorrow is the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Terrorism. And very soon it will be one year since October 7, the worst terrorist attack since the Holocaust. YNET: UN ignores October 7 victims in exhibit for terror victims remembrance day
Even though October 7 was the most deadly terror attack of 2023 and the most deadly massacre of Jews since the Holocaust, the UN leaves out Israeli terror victims in its commemoration events

To mark the seventh commemoration of the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism, a virtual high-level event titled "Voices for Peace: Victims of Terrorism as Peace Advocates and Educators" took place on August 21. The exhibition includes victims of the Twin Towers attack in 2001 and even terrorism in Indonesia but not a single representation of the October 7 massacre terror victims or any other Israeli terror victim...

Israel's new ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, said: "The UN's ignoring of Israeli terror victims, and during the year of such a brutal and shocking massacre, is a disgrace and marks a new moral low for the UN. The October 7 massacre is the largest terrorist attack in the last year and the most brutal massacre against Jews since the Holocaust, in which 1,200 Israelis were murdered and 109 are still being held hostage in Gaza."

"The UN was able to find the mother of a 'Palestinian terror victim' who was killed in New Zealand but was unable to find a single terror victim from the most brutal massacre that happened this year, or any Israeli terror victim from the thousands of terror incidents carried out against us. The Israeli delegation to the UN will make sure that no one in this building forgets October 7 and our hostages," Danon added. "As long as the UN doesn't declare Hamas a terrorist organization, this day remains utterly meaningless."

The question is not "Why did the UN leave out Israeli victims of terror?" Rather, the question is, "Why are you all surprised?"

Israel is supposed to be a people, separate and distinct. We have not been very successful at this.

So, perhaps now, we are being forced back into the position where we are supposed to be.

הפעם הראשונה שאני שמעתי את השיר "קשרי סרט צהוב סביב עץ האלון העתיק" על ידי ארווין לוין וראסל בראון היתה בשנות השבעים. טוני אורלנדו ולהקת "שחר" ביצעו את השיר בשנת תשל״ג/1973. בשנת תשל״ט/1979 סוזן גארט החלה ביוזמת הסרט הצהוב לתמיכה בבני הערובה האמריקאים באיראן.

אבל הסיפור של הסרט הצהוב התחיל לפני הרבה יותר זמן.

לפי דעה מקובלת, בעת מלחמת האזרחים האמריקנית ענדו נשות וארוסות חיילי צבא האיחוד (הצפון) צעיף צהוב, מטפחת צהובה או סרט צהוב בשערן כסמל לכך שהן נאמנות ומחכות לאהובן שישוב מן הקרבות. הצבע הצהוב היה סמלו של חיל הפרשים של צבא הצפון. רושם זה חוזק עקב המערבון בשם "היא ענדה סרט צהוב" שהופק בשנת 1949 העוסק במלחמה נגד ילידי ארצות הברית ובמנהג זה. שיר העוסק בנושא זכה לביצועים רבים כמו זה של האחיות אנדרוז ושל מקהלת מיץ' מילר.

עם זאת, ייתכן שמקור המנהג עוד במלחמת האזרחים האנגלית (שנות 1600 למנינם) בה ענדו אנשי הצבא הפוריטני סרטים צהובים על בגדיהם... (ויקיפדיה)

למה אנחנו צריכים סרט מודעות צהוב? למה צריכים מודעות ופרסומות על בני הערובה באנגלית?

כדי לשכנע את הגוים להזדהות איתנו. כדי לשכנע את הגוים לחמול עלינו. אבל סופו של דבר הגוים לא יזדהו איתנו אלא אנחנו נזדהה עם הגוים יותר. הגוים לא יחמלו עלינו אלא אנחנו נחמול על עצמנו ונשכח לזעוק להקב״ה. אומות עולם המערב ימשיכו לשנוא אותנו. לא משנה מה אנחנו עושים. עשיו שונא ליעקב.

לא נזכר סרט מודעות הצהוב בכתבה על ידי הרב ארל׳ה הראל. אבל נראה שדעתו תומך בדעה שלי לגבי הסרט הצהוב.

אנחנו כבר קיבלנו הרבה מנהגים מהגוים ויצרנו מנהגים לא מבוססים בתורה ובמסורתינו כגון האזעקה בשתי דקות דומיה ביום הזיכרון. אנו נשמע אזעקה חדשה בה׳ תשרי (7 אוקטובר למניינם)?

בעוד שבוע יתקיים צום החודש החמישי (ט׳ באב). היום הזה מציין הרבה אסונים שעם ישראל עבר ובמיוחד חורבן בית הראשון ובית השני. היום הזה יום מתאים לזכור את היהודים שנפלו בטבח שמיני עצרת כמו שהוא גם יום מתאים לזכור את השואה.

אפשר לציין את טבח שמיני עצרת ביום אחרי החגים שמותר להתאבל בפרהסיה. וכדאי לציין את זה בתאריך עברי ודווקא לא ב-7 באוקטובר.

אנחנו לא צריכים סרט צהוב שפה זרה כדי לעשות כך.

The article Rabbi Harel is a worth a read. Go to the link above in Hebrew. Run it through a translation program, one half at a time, and you will get the gist of his piece:

Do not use the non-Jewish date. Do not allow yourself to submit to non-Jewish cultures.

Rabbi Harel did not mention the yellow ribbon, only the issue of the date. However, I have included his article here, as I believe it supports my wish that we stop with the yellow ribbons.

The first time I heard any reference to a yellow ribbon was in the 1973 song "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree," by Irwin Levine and L. Russell Brown, and sung by Tony Orlando and Dawn. In 1979, Suzan E. Garrett began the yellow ribbon campaign in support of the American hostages being held in Iran.

However, the history of the yellow ribbon can be traced back much further.

The song/poem "She wore a yellow ribbon" has appeared in various forms for at least four centuries. It is based upon the same general theme: A woman of destiny is under some sort of test or trial as she waits for her beloved to return. Will she be true to him? This seems to be the lingering question and the basis for a great unfolding drama.

The song appears to have been brought to America from Europe by English settlers. The origin of the yellow ribbons seems likely to have come from out of the Puritan heritage. It was during the English Civil War (mid 1600s) that the Puritan Army of English Parliament wore yellow ribbons and yellow sashes onto the battlefield. (Wikipedia)

Why do we need a yellow banner? Why do we need ads and advertisements about the hostages in English?

To convince the non-Jewish nations to identify with us. To convince the non-Jewish nations feel sorry for us. But in the end the non-Jews will not identify with us. Rather we will identify with them even more. The non-Jews will not feel sorry for us. Rather, we feel sorry for ourselves, and forget to cry out to The Almighty. The nations of the western world (Edom) will continue to hate us, no matter what we do or say. Esau hates Jacob.

So, will we take the rabbi's advice and prevent foreign cultures from ruling us?

We have already adopted many non-Jewish customs, and have created customs which are not based on Torah and our tradition, such as sounding of the siren during the two minutes of silence on Yom HaZikkaron (Memorial Day). Will we hear a new alarm this coming 5 Tishrei (October 7)?

In another week Jews observe the Fast of the Fifth Month (Tisha b'Av). This day marks many disasters which have befallen Israel, and especially the destruction of the First and Second Temples. This day is an appropriate day to remember those Jews who fell in the Shemini Atzereth Massacre, just like it is an appropriate day to commemorate the Holocaust.

The Shemini Atzereth Massacre can be remembered after the conclusion of the holidays, when it is permissible for public mourning. And it should be done on a Hebrew date and not on October 7.

We do not need any yellow ribbons or the language of the Western exile to do that.

1:30 - 3:00: אלוף ג'ק קין (בדימוס), לשעבר סגן הרמטכ"ל, צבא ארה"ב: הכוונה של חמאס היתה לקבל תגובה אלימה בחזרה מהישראלים, ולקבל גינוי נרחב בינלאומי. חמאס יודע לנצל זאת ב-16 השנים האחרונות. REUTERS: WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO) says Israeli raid on Gaza hospital is totally unacceptable

GENEVA, Nov 15 (Reuters) - The World Health Organization head said on Wednesday that the Israeli military incursion into Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza was "totally unacceptable".

Israeli troops entered Shifa, Gaza's biggest hospital, on Wednesday as part of their assault on the Palestinian territory.

Israel says Hamas fighters have a headquarters in tunnels beneath it. Hamas denies this is the case.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a press conference in Geneva that patients and staff must be protected even if hospitals were used for military purposes.

"Hospitals are not battlegrounds," he said. "Israel's military incursion into Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza City is totally unacceptable."

The WHO, a U.N. agency, also said it was "urgently exploring" the possibility for evacuating patients and medical staff from the facility.

"To make sure this can be enabled, of course there is a need for safe passage and also for fuel for the ambulances," said Rik Peeperkorn, WHO representative in the occupied Palestinian territories....

...The WHO's chief legal expert, Steve Solomon, said health facilities were always under the protection of international law.

"Under international humanitarian law, hospitals...must be safeguarded against all acts of war," he said.

The U.N. special rapporteur to the occupied Palestinian territory claimed this week that Israel does not have a right to self-defense against Hamas under international law and accused the country of committing "war crimes."

The WHO is able to guarantee that fuel, food stuffs, and medical supplies will not end up in the hands of Hamas? No, it cannot. Are WHO associates really that stupid? Or that obviously Jew-hating?

The actually meaning of this verse is not running around to be a speaker in churches in order to reciprocate pay back Esau's "love," with ulterior motives, nor win a disproportionate number of Nobel Prizes. Rather it means to set an example. What does it mean for the Jewish People to set an example? It means for us to follow our own rules. What are our own rules? Keeping Torah and mitzvoth, in other words, doing our job.

Jews around the world have had the right idea, praying more, learning more, trying harder to keep Shabbat (Sabbatical) and Kashrut (dietary) laws, and men putting on tefillin (phylacteries).

Let us hope pray that this is continues, and is not simply a temporary trend.

שוק ארבעת המינים שפעל בשנים האחרונות ברובע ז' לא יפעל השנה. כל הפרטים על ההחלטה לבטל את קיום השוק

מכירת ארבעת המינים - בבתים ובחנויות, במקלטים ובחצרות, אך לא בשוק: אם לא שמתם לב עד כה, אזי השנה לא יפעל שוק ארבעת המינים ברובע ז'. מכירות ארבעת המינים לא יתקיימו שוב במקום אחד, אלא יפוזרו בכל חלקי הרובע.

ל'אשדודס' נודע כי הסיבה לאי הפעלת השוק, שקיים מזה יותר מעשור והוא הפך להצלחה, היא כחלק מהפקת לקחי אסון מירון, שהובילה בין היתר להחרפת הקריטריונים להפעלתו על ידי חברות הביטוח, כך שהתנאים הוחמרו, מה שהקרין אף על מחיר הפעלתו.

הדבר פוגע קשות בתושבים וכך גם בסוחרים שככל הנראה צפויים לראות ירידה במכירות. אך כפי שאנו מדווחים, על אף הנסיונות שנעשו להשגת אישורים, התברר כי השוק אינו עומד בתקנים העדכניים ולכן אין אפשרות להפעילו.

כתוצאה מאי הפעלת השוק לא תופעל ברובע ז' "סוכת ההוראה" של המועצה הדתית, והסוכות שיופעלו בידי המועה"ד הן רק ברבעים ג' וכן ברובע ב' - שם קיים שוק ארבעת המינים המסורתי.

In some haredi cities, there will not be a large Four Species market this year, following lessons learned from the Meron disaster.

The Four Species are used during the holiday of Sukkot (the Festival of Tabernacles), and traditionally, prior to the holiday, special marketplaces are set up to allow customers easy access to a large number of vendors at once.

One of the most popular Four Species markets was the one in Ashdod's Quarter 7. Sources in Ashdod have said that as part of the lessons learned from the Meron disaster, insurance companies have tightened criteria, dramatically influencing the cost of operations.

"Despite the attempts which were made to obtain permits, it became clear that the market does not meet the updated requirements and therefore we are unable to operate it," a local haredi news site reported.

"As a result of not operating the market, Quarter 7 will not operate the Religious Council's 'guidance sukkah,' and the sukkahs which will be operated by the Religious Council will only be located in Quarter 3 and Quarter 2 - where there is also a traditional Four Species market."

Whoever says such things is most likely some sort of robot who has been successfully indoctrinated by the State education system!

During the Meron disaster half a million were there, on a mountain. In contrast, a Sukkot four species market is a fairly small space.

On Tisha B'av Fast they were worried about two thousand Jews ascending the Temple Mount, in spite of the already hundreds of thousands of Arabs.

The report in Hebrew from Ashdodnet cited above adds: "This severely affects the residents as well as the merchants who are likely to see a decrease in sales."

How many Jews will not observe the mitzvah of Sukkot because the distance from their homes to public Sukkots is too long?

Once again, it seems the Israeli Government is not actually trying to protect us from danger. Rather it is making excuses for its continued battle against the Torah and those who keep it.

In spite of the recent completion of the Fast of the Fifth Month (Tisha b'Av) this year, it is incumbant upon us to continue to be aware of the daily destruction of the Holy Temple.

"...They said, any generation in which it is not rebuilt is debited as if it had destroyed it." (Jerusalem Talmud 1:1)

If you are not already weeping or enraged over the Holy Temple's destruction, then this video should make you feel the way you should be feeling. Cry, get angry, yell!

But you should not shout too loudly. And you should be careful about the words that come out of your mouth. Why? Because the powers that be are willing to tolerate shouting and unkind words only from protestors who hate, misrepresent, or try to cancel the Torah. They are simply unwilling to tolerate any protestations from those Torah observant Jews, who hold the Almighty and His Holy Torah in higher authority than the State. In the end, you might end up in jail for daring to question any actions by the so-called democratic State! God forbid! 

And yet these same powers that be accuse these Torah-observant Jews of baseless hatred, a concept extracted from the Talmud, taken out of context.

And to those Jews who do ascend Har HaBayith (the Temple Mount), you should remember that going up to this Holy place is not just a photo opp. Rather it is a very important and very serious act.

באמת?!

התלונות כזו פשוט עוד תירוץ להלחם נגד שמירת השבת, ולכן נגד כל התורה כולה. אבל המצב אפילו ממש יותר גרוע מזה. הישראלים המקדשים את יום הזיכרון יותר מתשעה באב, ואין צריך לומר יותר עשרת בטבת, מוכנים להתפשר על יום הזיכרון למען התיירים. ויש הרבה תיירים שמעליבים אותנו ופוגעים בנו בכל רחבינו מפני שלא אכפת להם בכלל ללמוד אפילו קצת על התרבות והמנהגים שלנו לפני שהם מגיעים לארצנו. ואין צריך לומר שלא אכפת להם על הדת שלנו, חוץ מכמה נוצרים שרוצים להכנס אלינו דרך קומבינות.

אם אנחנו מדברים על מדינה מוסלמית המחייבת נשים להתלבש בדרך מסוימת, למשל, לא היינו מקיימים את הדיון כזה. אף אחד לא ישאל את זכות מדינה מוסלמית לקבוע חוקים משלה למבקרים בה. נשים בממשלות מדינות זרות ועיתונאיות מדגימות זאת כל העת בחדשות. נדיר הוא כשמבקרת בארץ מכבדת את מקומות קדושים שלנו כמו הן עושות במדינות מוסלמיות.

אבל היהודים השונאים העצמם,חלק של חלק ה"ערב רב", שרוצים שכולנו ישתלב, כלומר יתבולל, בעולם המערבי וגלובליסטי, כלומר הלא-יהודי. ולכן אפשר לראות בקלות שהמצב יותר גרוע מההצעה הפשוטה להתאים את התיירים הלא ישראלים (תרגום: התיירים הלא דתיים, הלא מסורתיים, והלא יהודים).

האם האלה אותם האזרחים המודאגים שמתלוננים על נוכחותם ההולכת וגוברת של מסעדות כשרות אפילו כשרות למהדרין בתל אביב (כלומר עסקים סגורים בשבת). אפילו שעסקים אלה פשוט מגיבים להיצע ולביקוש על מנת לשפר את רווחיהם?

"Most took out their phone to film people getting out of their cars in the middle of the road and standing still," she says.
This is a perfect example of how strange this country and its traditions must seem to visitors.

Oh, puh-leeze!

This is just another excuse to chip away at Shabbat, and thus the Torah in its entirety. Worse yet, those who hallow Yom HaZikaron (Israeli Defense Forces Memorial Day) more than Tisha b'Av, commemorating the the destruction of the Holy Temples, among other calamities, and the Asarah b'Teveth, commemorating the initial breech of the walls of the Jerusalem, many of whom do not even know nor care about, are willing to compromise on Yom HaZikaron for the sake of tourists, who already step all over us, not caring at all about our culture and customs.

If this were a Muslim country requiring women to dress a certain way, we would not even be having this discussion. No one would question a Muslim country's right to determine its own rules for its visitors. Female officials and journalists demonstrate this all the time on the news. Rare is the occasion when a visiting female dignitary shows this same respect at the Kotel (Western Wall).

But with the self hating Jewish contingent of the Erev Rav who wants all of us to fit in (ie. assimilate) into Western (ie. non-Jewish), globalist society, you can see it is even worse than simply suggesting that we accommodate non-Israeli, (translation: non-religious and non-traditional Jewish) tourists.

Are these the same concerned citizens who complain about the increasing presence of kosher (ie. closed on Shabbat), even Kasher leMehadrin restaurants in Tel-Aviv. Even though these businesses are simply responding to supply and demand in order to improve their profits?

בראש השנה בבוקר מצאתי שסוללת השעון שלי מתה ולכן איחרתי להגיע בזמן לשמוע את תקיעות השופר מייד אחרי קריאת התורה. אז לא היתה לי שום ברירה חוץ מלהשאר ולסבול במשך חזרת הש״ץ של תפילת מוסף.

כשהתפללתי אצל רבי ומורי הרב דוד בר-חיים בירושלים בראש השנה בירושלים החחיה הזו מעולם לא היה היתה ככה בכלל. אלא אורך התפילה היה סביר וכן בטח לפי ההלכה, והתפילה אפשרה לנו להתרכז בקלות, וממש משמעותית.

הרבה מאיתנו לא יודעים התקיעות במשך חזרת הש״ץ של תפילת מוסף הן תקיעות השופר לשמוע לכתחילה. מאה תקיעות השופר שנוהגים לתקוע אחרי קריאת התורה הן פשוט בשביל הזקנים והחולים שלא יכולים לסבול מלהשאר בביה״כ במשך תפילת מוסף, ולנשים הצריכות לטפל בילדים.

אפשר לבקר אותי שאני התכוונתי להגיע ולשמוע את התקיעות ולצאת מייד. אבל בואו נדבר על זה פעם אחרת.

ואיך ברורלי שהרבה מאיתנו לא יודעים שתקיעות השופר במשך חזרת הש״ץ של תפילת מוסף הן תקיעות השופר לכתחילה ולא תקיעות מיותרות? בגלל כל הפטפוטים והילדים המתרוצצים והרועשים. רוב הקהילה הזו סבלו ולא שמו לב בכלל לחזרת הש״ץ ובמיוחד אחרי התקיעה האחרונה.

חבל שחושבים שחייבים להגיד את כל פיוט ופסגות נוספות כדי לצאת מידי חובה. ולכן לא סובלים רק באופן פיזי ורגשי אלא גם באופן רוחני.

לגבי המילה ענוי (torture) כאן בכותרת הסרטון (השני) באנגלית, אין שום כוונה להקטין את החריפות (חו״ח) של ענויי הצעירים ואפילו את מה שהקטינים עברו ע״י כוחות השלטון.

הרב פשוט מדגיש את הרצינות של הבעיות של המנהגים כאלה הפוגעים בכוונת הלב.

בסרטון הזה (הראשון) הרב מתיחס לתפילות ביום הכיפורים.

This past Rosh Hashanah morning, I found that my clock battery was dying, providing me with an inaccurate time. So I ended up arriving late to hear shofar (ram's or other kosher, properly prepared horn) blown after the Torah reading. So, in order to fulfill the mitzvah mid'Oraita (explicitly written commandment) of hearing the shofar blown on the first day of the Seventh Month (Tishrei), I really had no choice but to endure the excruciatingly long repetition of the Mussaf amidah, the additional prayer, of Rosh HaShannah.

When I used to pray on Rosh HaShannah in Jerusalem by my rabbi and teacher, this was never the case. Rather it was a reasonable, and yes, halakhic in length and components, and for that matter, easy to concentrate on, and meaningful.

Many of us do not know the blasts during the rehearsal of the Supplement Prayer are the shofar blasts to hear in the first place. The hundred shofar blosts that are used to stick after reading the Torah are simple for the elderly and the sick who cannot suffer to stay in the hospital during supper prayer, and for women who need to take care of the children.

You can criticize me for intending to come and hear shofar, and then immediately leave. But that's an issue for discussion for another time.

And how is it so clear to me that most of us do not realize that shofar blasts during the repetition of the mussaf amidah are the  ideal time to hear them, as opposed to those blown right after the Torah reading? Because of all the chatter among the men and noisy kids running around. Most of this congregation where I prayed were suffering and indeed, did not pay so much attention to the repetition of mussaf.

It is a pity to think that all the possible added poetry and paragraphs must be said in order to fulfill ones obligation, and thus not only suffer physically and emotionally but also spiritually.

With regard to the word torture used here in the video in English below, there is no intention of minimalizing ​​of the torture of our youth, even minors have undergone by the powers that be.

The rabbi simply emphasizes the seriousness of the problems of such practices that prevent us participating fully and connecting in our own prayers.

עכשיו, תסתכלו לסמליל שלהם. האם אתם רוצים את הילדים שלכם להסתובב מלובשים חולצה עם סמליל כזה?

ברור שכמה מכם ישאלו: "מה הבעיה? זה לא צלב... בדיוק."

בתגובה, אני מספר לכם סיפור. לפני יותר מעשרים שנים, הרב מרדכי אליהו זצ"ל נכנס למקווה בשכונת גבעת שאול בערב שבת. הוא נהג להגיע מוקדם עם השמשים שלו כדי לשמור על הפרטיות שלו. בערב השבת הזה בדרך לצאת מבית המקווה, הוא אמר לבלן להוריד את המגבת הנמצאת בקבלה.

הבלן לא רצה להתווכח עם הרב הזה, קו"ח הרב הראשי לישראל הספרדי (הראשון לציון) לשעבר. אבל הוא גם רצה לדעת את הסיבה של הרב.

ואז הוא שאל את הרב למה צריכים להוריד את זה. הרב אמר יש צלב מודפס על המגבת. הבלן הגיב שבמגבת אין צלב אלא עיצוב תשבצים של צלב.

הרב הגיב, "זה צלב. תוריד את זה." ואז הבלן הוריד את המגבת והרב יצא.

ולכן, אני חוזר. האם אתם רוצים את הילדים שלכם להסתובב מלובשים בחולצה עם סמליל כזה?

According to the Yeru-Shahmat website, this club's objectives do not seem to be political at all. They just want to play chess.

Now, look at their logo. Would you want your children to walk around a shirt with a logo like this?

Surely some of you will ask, "What's the problem? It's not a cross... exactly."

In response I will recount to you a story I heard directly from the men's miqwah (mikveh - ritual immersion pool) attendant. More than 20 years ago, Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu ztz"l (pictured above) came to his local miqwah in the Givat Shaul neighborhood in Jerusalem on Erev Shabboth. He was accustomed to arriving early with his shamashim (attendants), so as to maintain his privacy. On this particular Erev Sabboth, upon leaving the miqwah, Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu told the miqwah attendant to take down the towel that was hanging in the entryway.

The miqwah attendant did not want to argue with the rabbi, even more so the for Chief Sepharadi Rabbi of Israel (AKA: Rishon leTzion). But he also wanted to know the rabbi's reasoning.

So, the miqwah attendant asked the rabbi why this towel needed to be taken down. Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu said that there was a cross printed on the towel. The miqwah attendant responded that there wasn't actually a cross printed on the towel. Rather it was a design of interlocking crosses.

Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu then said, "It's a cross. Take it down." And then he left the miqwah.

And so, I ask again, "Would you want your children to walk around a shirt with a logo like this?"

One more question: What do you think about the "coexistence"  message implied in this logo?

האישה התוקפת בתפילין בסרטון היא לא הראשונה / The Woman Attacking Tefillin in the Video is not the First

על הסרטון למטה, הבלוגרית תומר דבורה כותבת:

"עד עכשיו לא ידענו מי היא האישה הזאת, אבל עכשיו מדווחים שהיא "פרופ 'פנינה פרי, אשתו של יורם פרי, פרופסור לסוציולוגיה, ששימשה כנשיא הקרן החדשה לישראל בין 1999-2001". היא היתה בדרכה חזרה למרילנד, שם היא גרה כיום ומלמדת על פלורליזם ורב-תרבותיות. (המשך)

עשר אגורות (2¢):
בשכונת רמת אביב א׳ לפני 20 שנה, אני זוכר היטב את התושב החילוני שצעק על החב״דניק העומד ליד שולחן התפילין שלו. וכשחב״ד פתח ישיבה ואפילו המקווה שם, בואו נגיד שהדברים האלה לא התקבלו והרבנים ובחורי הישיבה לא קיבלו שום חיבוקים מהתושבים החילוניים. ובזמן הוא היו לשכונה הזאת שבעה בתי כנסת. נראה לי שתושבי השכונה מקבלים (סובלים מ-?) את בתי הכנסת כי הקהילות האלה לא מפרסמים את עצמם בפרהסיה ומסדרים לשכונה תקיעה בשופר בסוף יום הכיפורים ומסיבות פורים לילדים, ולא מפריעים לשכנים.

בפתיחת קניון רמת אביב, גם לפני 20 שנה, התחיל מאבק בין תושבי השכונה לבעל הקניון. תושבי רמת אביב דרשו מבעל הקניון לפתוח את זה בשבתות, אפילו שהקניון תחת בעלות פרטית. וברור שלא אכפת להם שבעל הקניון שומר שבת. בסוף התושבים הסכימו לתת לקניון להיות סגור בשבת, כרגע שגילו להם שיהיה יותר רעש ופקקים בשכונה עם קניון פתוח.

אני גם ראיתי בשכונה הזאת את מודעות אבלות תלויות בקירות המכריזות ש"רמת אביב החילונית״ נפטרה. לדעתם, זה בסדר כשאישה מלובשת לא בצניעות מסתובבת בשכונה חרדית. זה בסדר כשמישהו מסתובב בשכונה חרדית ומדבר בפלפון ומעשן סיגריה בשבת בזכות הדמוקרטיה (בארץ יש לנו כאילו-דמוקרטיה). אבל זה לא בסדר כשיהודי דתי מעודד יהודים לקיים מצוות בשכונה חילונית. נו? מה קרה ל״ פלורליזם ורב-תרבותיות״ של הפרופ׳ פנינה פרי??

אני לוקח ולהתאים משפט מהספר חוות חיות ע״י ג׳ורג׳ אורוול כדי להסביר את הצביעות שלהם:

״יש שוויון בין כל היהודים, אבל כמה יהודים הם יותר שווים מהאחרים.״

וכהרבה יהודים כבר כתבו, אני בכלל לא הופתעתי ללמוד את הקשר בין פנינה פרי, האישה התוקפת את היהודי המינח תפילין, לאירגון הקרן החדשה לישראל.

וגם אני בכלל לא מופתע ללמוד שהיא מגוררת בחו״ל.

Until now, we did not know who the woman was, but it is now being reported that she is "Prof. Pnina Peri, wife of Yoram Peri, a professor of sociology who served as president of the New Israel Fund between 1999-2001." She was on her way back to Maryland where she currently lives and teaches about pluralism and multiculturalism. (cont.)

Esser Agaroth (2¢):
Twenty years ago in Ramat Aviv Alef, a neighborhood in north Tel-Aviv, I remember oh so well the secular resident who shouted at the Chabbadnik standing at his tefillin table. And when Chabbad opened a yeshivah and even a mikveh (ritual immersion pool) in the neighborhood, well, let's just say that these were not welcomed with open arms. And at the time, there were seven synagogues in the neighborhood. It seems to me that they accepted (tolerated?) the presence of these synagogues, because these communities did not "push themselves" onto public, and also provided it with shofar-blowing at the end of Yom Kippur and Purim parties for the children, and they did not bother the neighbors.

With the opening of the Ramat Aviv Mall, also 20 years ago, a battle ensued between Ramat Aviv residents and the mall's owner. Local residents demanded that the owner keep the mall open on Shabbat, even though the mall was privately owned. Of course, they did not care that the mall owner was religious and kept Shabbat. But, eventually, the residents agreed to let the mall be closed on the Shabbat, when they realized that the traffic and noise would increase drastically if it were to stay open.

I also remember seeing mourning notices around the neighborhood, announcing that the "Secular Ramat Aviv" had died. It is OK for scantily-clad women to dress however they want, while walking through a Haredi (very religious) neighborhood. It is OK for a secular man to walk through a Haredi neighborhood on Shabbat while talking on his phone and smoking a cigarette, all because of democracy (deMOCKracy). But, it is not at all OK for a religious person to publicize Torah and mitzvot in a predominantly secular neighborhood. So much for Prof. Pnina Peri's "pluralism and multiculturalism."

Borrowing and adapting from George's Orwell's Animal Farm...

"All Jews are equal, but some Jews are more equal than others."

As many Jews have already written, I was not at all surprised to learn of Pninah Peri, the woman who  connection to the New Israel Fund.

Nor, am I at all surprised to learn that she lives outside of Eretz Yisra'el.

איפה היה מרדכי בפורים? לא בתל אביב / Where was Mordechai on Purim? Not in Tel-Aviv

אִישׁ יְהוּדִי, הָיָה בְּשׁוּשַׁן הַבִּירָה; וּשְׁמוֹ מָרְדֳּכַי, בֶּן יָאִיר בֶּן-שִׁמְעִי בֶּן-קִישׁ--אִישׁ יְמִינִי. (אסתר ב,ה)

במודעה לאירועי חג הפורים בתל אביב (ימין), מישהו בעיריית תל אביב שכח להזכיר את החשיבות של מרדכי במגילת אסתר, והשיתוף שלו בהצלת היהודים במלכות פרס, מהתוכנית של המן יש״ו להשמיד אותנו. או אולי השם של מרדכי נשאר בחוץ בכוונה.

כנראה, המון תל אביבים רוצים שהשפה אנגלית תתקבל כהשפה הרשמית של העיר. אבל המודעה הזאת באנגלית לא בשביל התושבים אלא בשביל התיירים. אולי, התיירים הנוצריים יראו שמרדכי חסר מהקטע הזה. אבל עובדי עיריית תל אביב יודעים טוב טוב שהם לא צריכים לעשות שום דבר כדי לעודד את התיירות הנוצרית (לדעתי, אנחנו צריכים לעשות את ההפך ולהרתיע את זה). אלא עיריית תל אביב משקיעה ומתאמצת לעודד תיירים ה"פרוגרסיבים", ההיפים, המסתובבים סתם ושאר השמאלנים מאירופה ומצפון אמריקה להגיע לעיר. בנוסף, ההתיירים שכן קרואים את הפרסומת הזאת יראו שם נקבה (ולא שם זכר), ובוודאי יראו את המילה ״מסיבה.״

ברור שאני לא צריך להאיר לכם ששיתוף הקב״ה בהצלת עם ישראל גם לא נזכרת במודעה. נכון שהקב״ה לא מוזכר במגילת אסתר במפורש. אבל גם ברור תורה שבעל פה מסולפת על ידי כוחות השלטון, או נעדרת לראשיהם לחלוטין. בנוסף, הם לא רוצים להזכיר את אלוהים, מפני שהם לא רוצים לעודד אף אחד לחשוב עליו, ולא רוצים להעליב את אף אחד כולל מי שלא מאמין באלוהים היחיד האמיתי.

פורים הוא חג יהודי מציין היום שבו אסתר המלכה הצילה את עם היהודי מהשמדה על ידי המן (יש״ו) יועץ למלך פרס. יש מסורת להתחפש בתחפושות ולשלוח מתנות לשכנים ולאהובים, ו(כפי מסורת תל אביבית אמיתית) לעשות מסיבה כל הלילה!

The City of Tel Aviv has either forgotten the significance of Mordechai in Megilat Esther, and his part in saving the Jews within the Persian Empire, from Haman's ysh”w evil plan of extermination, or purposely left him out.

The sign is in English. So, in spite of the fact that many Tel-Avivians believe that English is the official language of the city, the sign is most assuredly intended for tourists. Christians might notice the omission. But, the City of Tel-Aviv undoubtedly knows that it takes little to no effort to encourage Christian tourism (…which personally I think should be discouraged). And so, Tel-Aviv places its efforts in attracting “progressives,” hippies, wanderers, and other assorted leftist Europeans and North Americans. Ignorant tourists who even bother to read this sign might notice the mention of a female name, and will certainly mention the so-called “custom of partying.”

Of course, I do not even have to mention the omission of The Almighty’s part in our salvation. After all, He is not explicitly mentioned in the text of Megilat Esther, and the Oral Torah is distorted, if not completely absent, from the minds of the powers that be. Plus, they would never want to mention God, as they wouldn’t want to encourage anyone even to think about Him, not to mention not wanting to offend anyone.

European Rabbis are Right,...for Once,...Sort of

YNET: European rabbis slam EU court ruling on religious symbol bans
Court of Justice sets precedent for enabling employers to ban visible religious symbols in the workplace, in a ruling related to dismissal of 2 women for refusing to remove headscarves; move sparks harsh words from European chief rabbi: 'Europe's faith communities are no longer welcome.'

Chief Rabbi Goldschmidt, President of the Conference of European Rabbis, issued a scathing statement slamming Tuesday's first ruling by the European Union's top court on the issue of women wearing Islamic headscarves at work.

According to the precedent-setting decision, employers may bar staff from wearing visible religious symbols.

“This decision sends signals to all religious groups in Europe. With the rise of racially motivated incidents and today’s decision, Europe is sending a clear message; its faith communities are no longer welcome,” the statement read. 

“Political leaders need to act to ensure that Europe does not isolate religious minorities and remains a diverse and open continent.” (cont.)

Esser Agaroth (2¢):
Although Rabbi Goldschmidt comes off as a defender of Islam, he is right about one thing. If Muslims lose any of their religious rights, Jews will be next.

Already in France, Jews wear baseball caps and other nondescript head coverings, not to mention the traditional, French beret, in order to maintain the Jewish custom of covering ones head. Religious Jewish women have done the same, but French style hats a couple of sizes too large, so that they can be pulled down lower than the usual style in order fully to cover their hair.

Jews have been doing this throughout history, in order not to stand out, and risk ostracization, beatings, and even death at the hands of the residents of their non-Jewish host countries.

American Jews have already been down this road. Even as recently as the 1990's a Jewish postal worker in "liberal," Southern California fought, and lost, for the right to wear a kippah (traditional Jewish men's head covering) to work. Meanwhile, in U. S. prisons the fight continues to obtain kosher food for Jewish prisoners, while Muslim prisoners already enjoy their hallal certified meals without any worries.

Unfortunately, most American Jews will not make the connection that Rabbi Goldschmidt has.

I will go further and suggest that not only will anti-Semitism rise, the Jews will also be blamed for the loss of religious rights of Muslims. Even though Jews are their biggest cheerleaders. This should come as no surprise to anyone, as getting stabbed in the back by those we have aided is embedded in the history of our people.

Rabbi Goldschmidt himself still has not made the connection that the atmosphere toward "faith communities," is a signal for all Jews to leave Europe, and for Jewish leaders like himself to encourage the exodus, and subsequent journey back to the only home of the Jewish People, Eretz Yisra'el.

European Rabbis are right,...for once,...sort of.

Rash"i suggests the possibility that only 20% of Israel left Egypt, at the time of our great exodus from there. How so?

וַיַּסֵּב אֱלֹהִים אֶת-הָעָם דֶּרֶךְ הַמִּדְבָּר, יַם-סוּף; וַחֲמֻשִׁים עָלוּ בְנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל, מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִם. (שמות יג,יח)

But God led the people about, by the way of the wilderness by the Red Sea; and the children of Israel went up (hamushim) armed out of the land of Egypt. (Ex. 13:18)

On the word hamushim, he offers an alternative translation to "armed."

דבר אחר: חמושים אחד מחמשה יצאו, וארבעה חלקים מתו בשלשת ימי אפילה.

Another thing: one fifth of five [fifths] left, and four parts (fifths) died in the [plague of the] three days of darkness.

Several sources, such as the Kol HaTor, suggest parallels between our exodus from exile in Egypt and how we will complete our exodus from the current exile of Edom, including the possibility that only four fifths of us will make it out this time as well.

Who knows? There might even be three days of darkness. However, this time final time around, will these days of darkness necessarily be physical?

Instead, they could be spiritual, and unfortunately, the may have already begun for European Jewry.

May our recalling of the exodus from Egyptian exile this Pesah (Passover) inspire those Jews still entrenched in Europe, to complete their own Exodus.
